Goto Trip Page: BRT Fall Hike

The first one had it all. Free style diving, bacon rings, Khatru coming out of the closet, Mozark building a textbook perfect LNT fire, melted boots, and CMB running circles around all the other hikers.

Khatru mostly just lays around sleeping now. Not much of that Mississippi Leg Hound left in him.

Hey Chili,
I'm defintitely planning on going if there's room on the trip. I'd be glad to help with the shuttles if I can. I have a king cab pick up also so I can haul gear or people. I am planning on arriving Thursday evening and leaving Sunday after we eat.
I do a lot of hiking in the Ouachitas but L've never been to the Buffalo. I'm a Sierra Club backpack leader and I've been on a couple trips with the arkansasbackcountry guys.
Let me know.

Glad to have you. That is a.big boost on the shuttle situation. We can leave one vehicle at Pruitt and take the other to Ponca.

Thanks.

I couldn't answer that. But I am guessing that if there is any fishing, it will be for smallmouth and I would think rooster tails would fill the bill.

I will float that question over on the Arkansas Backcountry site.

Speaking of fishing, I just thought of something. This is the area of the country where streams might dry up later in the summer, etc, right? Does the Buffalo dry up some? Just where or where was that river noted in Stikky's long-ago report where he had to DRAG the canoe for quite some distance?!?!? LOL!!!

Portion of the Buffalo dry up when the River flows beneath the rocks. From what I can tell, they have had enough rain to keep water in the Buffalo.

I would expect it to be flowing in October.

H2O
The Buffalo never dries up but there are sections that are underground in the dry times of the year. Getting water won't be a problem unless you consume it like a cotton-mouthed Pachyderm.

Big Bluff
Big Bluff at the end of the Goat Trail:

Unfortunately the BRT runs on the opposite side of the river from the Goat Trail and goes nowhere near it unless you take a multi-mile detour.

I hiked the Goat Trail back in my youthful Boy Scout days. Lots of places on that trail where one slip would be your last. Skeery!

Fishing's not worth the trouble, IMO, that time of year, there's not really enough flow to catch any nice ones.

Training
I got out early this morning and did some hiking at Devil's Den for BRT training after first having a man-pleasin' breakfast at Cracker Barrel.

I normally don't hike in AR in the summer and it was kind of weird to see all the vegetation where I'm used to seeing unobscured bluffs. The shade on the trail was nice, though.
