Trail Days 2010
After having missed the last 4 Trail Days, I am bound and determined to do the next one right. I am going to start at Dickey Gap (near Troutdale) the Friday or Saturday before, and take 4 or 5 days to get to Damascus, arriving Tuesday afternoon, so I can be there when it starts on Wednesday, and then stay until it ends on Sunday. The mileage will be 10 - 12 miles per day.

I'm interested, however, I don't want to get into Damascus before Thursday. There isn't really anything going on before then, plus you can't get into the campgrounds before Thursday morning.

I definitely want to hike to Damascus. Right now I am planning on starting at Massie Gap, which is only about 36 miles (I think). It all depends on how many days I can get off from work.

I have already put in for the time off. It looks like both my kids are planning on coming with me again. You all have corrupted them, lol. They seem to think that trail days are fun or something like that.

No that is not a knife (thank goodness) it is the side of her pillow. We had just finished eating lunch and I was taking a nap on my foam pad. She decided to try to fit on the mat with me.

Chin, you might want to drive a car other than the Prius to the trailhead. The site of a reliable hybrid Toyota might cause someone signed up on this trip to go nuts and run it over with his hummer in honor of GM.

What do you think about starting at Fox Creek Trailhead on Sunday. That puts me 40 miles from Damascus. We can do ~9 miles each day and get into Damascus late morning-early afternoon on Thursday.
Has anyone done anything about transperation on Sunday? Where is everyone planning on staying Saturday night?

I have called Mt Rogers and reserved a shuttle for Sunday Morning at 9 am. Let me know if you are interested in going at that time. I've reserved it for 5 people, but will need to call with the exact total as we get closer.

looking at the guidebook, it doesnt appear we will be missing much of anything by cutting out dickey gap to fox creek, and 10 miles per day is still a healthy hike. the only thing is, day 1 has to be short because we would have to camp at wise shelter (no camping allowed in grayson). wise shelter to damascus is 33 miles, which is still do-able (IT'S DO-ABLE!) in 3 days.

those who still want to do the full distance can start a day earlier and meet the others at fox creek
crash bang

on a related note, if anyone doesnt want to sleep in the shelter, then we have to make camp just before grayson and wise shelter. there are a couple of creeks where that is possible

I just want to know what transperation is.
