Logistics and stuff

“Hello,
I have made the campsite reservations for 6 people. I have reserved and paid for the shuttle for four people as well. As stated, the shuttle costs are $20.00 per person. You can pay me when you see me. I have emailed my flight itinerary to Leslee. Right now we have four people going on the trip. I am not sure how Attila is going to get to Munising, but he may be meeting us at the Milwaukee Airport so we may need room for 4 plus gear.

My big concern is the music rotation!!
We all got different tatses, that could get ugly!! I would suggest that each person get two 37.5 minute blocks and not back to back either. That outta get us ta Munising. I will post the campsites when I get the conformation”

I found a milage chart that lists the distances from the trailhead to the campsites. I figured I give this info to you, so you can post it.


(listed in miles)
Trailhead - 0.0
Benchmark - 11.2
Beaver Creek - 20.4
Mosquito - 30.4
End of Trail - 42.4


This means that miles hiked will be
1st Day - 11.2
2nd Day - 9.2
3rd Day - 10
4th Day - 12”

I typed LOL and I am not offended. LOL!! See??? Yes, I agree the concern is legitimate.

I tried to call and gather some more info about the number of tents six people are allowed to have, but did not connect with anyone that could answer. I was told to call on 6/02/2009 and there would be someone who could answer my question.

I was informed that each campground has a limited number of numbered posts (these are the campsites) and you have to pitch your tent by them.

The question then is: Do we have reservations s for 6 tents??

I will email everyone the profile that Trout is referring to. I could not get it to post well on webshots!!

Ok, here’s the deal.

I spoke with Pam, supervisor at the backcountry reservation office for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I explained the situation with us needing sites for six tents.
This is what we came up with;

We can have six tents at Benchmark Campground (6/25) and Beaver Creek (6/26) Campground as long as they are solo tents (small) Lunar Solo, MSR Hubba, Etc.
We can have four tents at Mosquito Campground and two at Potato Patch campground (6/27) Potato Patch is 3 miles west of Mosquito, so we need 2 volunteers to hike on to Potato Patch that day. This will make for a shorter hike for the 2 volunteers on 6/28.

There is a possibility that space will become available at Mosquito on 6/27 as they always keep some sites open for walk ins. If no one signs up for them, we can have the sites!!

We need to pick up our permits on the morning of 6/25 at the Munising Interagency Visitor Center, which is located at 400 E. Munising Ave, Munising, Mi. Pam will be working there that day so we shouldn’t have any problems. She is also mailing me an updated backcountry reservation form that has all the changes on it.

1. Bay Furnace Campground located in a little place called Christmas 5 miles west of Munising. Operated by the National Forest folks.

I've been sick the last five days (not sure if it's allergies). With my equipment list sorted out, I'm starting to get things taken care of, so i don't have any last minute minutia that deals with the trip. Last night I made most of my desperately needed purchases... still debating on getting a pack cover and a lighter sleeping bag. Today, tonight, I start prepping some of my meals (using the dehydrator and fresh sealer.


Randall, could you post this for me? I wish there was someone I could talk too about getting my login fixed.


So that everyone knows my plan, I'm driving up from Elkhart, IN, early in the morning. I was planning on getting a cheap motel that night: however, if the group decides to camp
i'm ok with doing that unless it has horrible showers... must shower (no use being dirty five days when we only have to be dirty four). I would camp in my van.


Looking forward to meeting everyone. As Crash knows, I'm a slow hiker... so don't wait up! We could save money with the shuttle van, if we did our own shuttling. I'm happy with whatever... Except blisters and bear hugs!

As far as Campgrounds for 6/24 goes, Bay Furnace has no showers!!
The Tourist Park has showers…hmmmmm….Heck…I don’t take showers fer a week at a time and I still smell good!!!

I think Crash and Atilla are driving up from Indy, you might be able to catch a ride with them somewhere up North. You could also take the train to from South Bend Union station (Chicago) and then to the Milwaukee Airport from there and ride up with us. It kind fun to check out all the rails options up this way. I know it costs $22.00 oneway (Amtrak) to go from Union Station to Milwaukee Airport and it will fit in the schedule.

If you are planning on using it, and I recommend that you do, you need to call and make a reservation for 6/25 leaving at 10:00 AM Local time at the Munising Falls Interpretive Center.

“It's amazing how quickly these trips can set up! Everything sounds like it is gelling pretty well. As it looks, right now, I'm driving up from Elkhart (about 6 AM) and expect to arrive around 3 PM in Munising. I looked at the trains and it looked interesting, but it would take far longer to get there and back. It's almost a straight shot from Elkhart and should take a little over 7 hrs driving.


With the three vehicles we'll have, getting around shouldn't be a problem. :) Let me know if you need me to do anything to help out.
