HOUSTON – A 23-month-old Texas toddler became the first confirmed swine flu death outside of Mexico as authorities around the world struggled to contain a growing global health menace that has also swept Germany onto the roster of afflicted nations. Officials say the death was in Houston.

Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Houston Health and Human Services Department, said Wednesday that the child had traveled with family from Mexico to Brownsville in South Texas. The child became ill in Brownsville and was taken to a Houston hospital and died Monday night, she said.”

“The company I work for has infectious disease tracking software for our member/owner hospitals. Anywho, one of the developers showed me a simulation and it was pretty neat to see the software build reports and action plans around a mocked up H1N1 outbreak.

Anyway, just thought it was nifty.

Madison County: 2 Probable Cases, 10 Additional Suspected Cases of Swine Flu

HUNTSVILLE - Officials with several departments in Madison County will hold a news conference at 4:00pm Thursday to discuss the latest findings in a local outbreak of probable swine flu.

Thursday afternoon, the Huntsville/Madison County Emergency Management Agency reported there are an additional 10 suspected cases of swine flu, in addition to the two probable cases of H1N1. These additional cases were identified through the Department of Public Health's canvassing process of contacting area medical facilities.

Officials with the EMA, Department of Public Health, Madison County Commission, as well as Madison Mayor Paul Finley and Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle will be present at the news conference.

Thursday morning, doctors urged people not to panic following two cases of probable swine influenza being found in students at Heritage Elementary School in Madison. The students are in the same kindergarten class, and are said to be doing well as they recover.”

As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama attacked "trickle down economics" as "bankrupt" and an "old, discredited" philosophy that "didn't work." He was wrong. Even worse, though, is that he and congressional Democrats are embracing a Democratic version of trickle-down economics that won't work.

In H.R. 1, there's $41 billion set aside for school districts, $1.5 billion for university research grants, $2 billion for Energy Department labs, and $3 billion for the National Science Foundation. Yet education is one of the few sectors that added jobs last year.

There's also $4 billion for health programs like obesity control and smoking cessation, $2 billion for the National Institutes of Health, $462 million for the Centers for Disease Control, and $900 million for pandemic flu preparations.
