FYAO IX Trip Report

“Another fantastic FYAO trip in the Adirondacks(NY)!!

Participants: AmyG, Gremlin, SirPete, Sacco, Marko, Fridge, Jackstraw, Sab

8 of us, plus Traildog ventured into the Dix Wilderness for a 3-day snowshoe jaunt. The Winter trailhead was at the Ranger's Station off of Elk Lake Road. After walking along the road(arrgghh) for what seemed like forever, we reached the "real" trailhead. From there, it was a gorgeous trek with easy grades through evergreen mixed forest. There were a few tricky spots across the creeks that were not-so-frozen, but other than that, the sled performed perfectly.

The area hadn't had any recent snowfall, so the trails were well-packed. This was a bit misleading though, as anone who set foot OFF of the trail can attest to! ;)

The Slide Brook Leanto was the perfect social room and most of the stinky boys set up shop inside. I chose to set up my own shelter, as usual. (I have learned from past experience!!)

Saturday, we set out to explore Macomb and SirPete, Sacco and Jackstraw achieved the peak. I got as far as the base of the slide and enjoyed the views...I also got to enjoy watching the crew scramble up the slide!!! (see pic)
It was amazing to see how FAST a person can glissade back down as well. All in all, Saturday was a FANTASTIC day to be out.

Sunday, we packed up and headed out for the usual post-trail binge at the local diner.

“My 3rd FYAO trip and every minute was worth the 1,400 miles round trip. Plenty of snow, Sled performed like a sled should have. Memories going with some of the LEGENDS of trail talk. I'll be looking forward for next year. Sir: Pete and Luke among the new members along with Sacco...Grimmypoo....oh wait....AmyG is the only one who can call him that....Marko...and Jackstraw.

It was a great crew we had and we missed the suckers who bailed out.”

“I think the low only got down to 5 at night...which was because there was ZERO cloud cover. Clear skies meant that you could see eleventy-million stars!!! Totally worth the brrrr.

Daytime temps were perfect!!!

It was so great to see everyone...and, yes, we talked about those who were absent. ;)

“Yeah, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but the spare was already on the car because I had another one a few weeks ago. Pretty weird considering I've never gotten a flat in my life and then get two in such a short time frame.”

“I used to keep the winter beard until it got too warm. That was when it was brown.
Now that it's gray I usually get rid of it shortly after FYAO.”

“On long outdoor trips I just love to see it when a guy grows a nice beard. Not every man grows a really good beard though. Some have rather sparse and patchy facial hear.

The best part comes upon returning home, when the guy goes under the shower, to wash off the dirt, smell and...shave. Then I can hardly wait to see him coming from the shower, fresh looking, like a totally new man and I am sorry the beard is gone. Until next time.

...but I can tell you how it feels when peeing at -27� and a stiff breeze blowing right underneath you. I can tell, you'll be desperate to get the business done as fast as possible.
