“i realize a lot of ppl know where it is, but i'd really like that number not to grow. patton cave is a really special place, and so far it has not been trashed. i'd like to keep it that way.”
i'm totally with you man. and yes, very clean. it's far enough in, hikingwise. i love it too.

We need to find somewhere new. Lets go to TN, or what about a different section of the Sheltowee besides the Red? It runs Northeast for something like 125 miles. I'm realy getting burnt out on the same places.

FO Crash. LOL! I knew that was coming, and as it happens, I'm reading about the Cumberland trail right now!

I need to do some bushwhacking with map and compass though. You mentioned something about That. Would you be interested in putting a trip like that together w me?

My goal this year is to do some new places. I've been in the Gorge so many times it's time to see what else is in that area. I want to do some WV hiking this year as well and do a few of the other places in Indiana and Kentucky I've never been to.

Nigal, I was just thinking "what about WV". Got anything specific in mind?

Somewhere with a view though. I'm not driving 500 miles for a green tunnel. I can get that 20 minutes from my house.

I want to get to more places this year as well. I'm trying to be happy with local places while there's less daylight, but as soon as we get into spring, I'm looking for new places I can get to within a day's drive. I'm saving up on my vacation time so I can take long weekends.

Long weekends for me are going to have to consist of Thurs-Sat trips. The GC in August, and a trip to the farm in AL while my oldest attends Space Camp this summer are going to burn ALL my vacation hours. Maybe while in LA I'll finally get out to the Walls of Jericho. That would be nice, and it'd make the trip a three-fer!

That aint bad. I'm mired in WV still. Thet have no good resources, and the state parks page doesn't have anything relating to hiking or back country camping. I did read some about Dolly Sods, but it does not sound like fun. "Don't go off the trails because you might find an unexploded mortar round" Good lord! What happens when you need to dig a cat hole, and you blow your azz off?!

Fridge does lots of trip at Dolly Suds. Check with him. Also the Cranberry wilderness is good. I've been there once. Both are good locations to car pool to.

Dolly Sods or Otter Creek.

Pictured Rocks sounds nice, but I think it needs to warm up a bit before I head that far north. I'm not equiped for anything more than 10 - 15 deg lows. Otter Creek may be good. Dolly Sods sounds like RRG with un-exploded ordinance lying about waiting for a stumbling drunk.

I've hiked in 40 states now and Dolly Sods is my favorite area east of the Miss, I think it's one of the most unique and beautiful as well as different areas available to hike. It's classified as a wilderness now, but I hope that NPS will realize it's difference and beauty and take it over some day. It's the only place in the lower 48 where you get Canadian Tundra type flora, and trees that have branches on one side.

Cranberry is nice, but it is a "deep wilderness" experience, where as the Sods can be that and have breathtaking views at the same time. We own a cabin near the Sods and I would not attempt a winter trip. One Feb we visited camp and got stuck since it snowed a couple of feet. Spring-fall is when I go to the Sods. However, it is completely different in winter but be prepared to get stuck.

Otter Creek is also a deep wilderness, but of the three areas I have the least experience there. I've done every trail in the Sods and about half at Cranberry. We used to do a Sods trip every June/July that had gotten pretty big a couple times.
