Goto Trip Page: Winter Hike - In Honor of Mataharihiker

Weather Alert as of Monday 5PM
... BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIR TO INVADE UPPER MICHIGAN THIS WEEK...

EXPECT THE COLDEST AIRMASS OF THE SEASON TO ARRIVE OVER THE UPPER GREAT LAKES MONDAY NIGHT AND PERSIST THROUGH FRIDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL FALL BELOW ZERO BY LATE MONDAY NIGHT... AND BOTTOM OUT AS LOW AS 20 TO 30 BELOW ZERO ON THURSDAY NIGHT OVER THE WEST HALF OF UPPER MICHIGAN AWAY FROM THE MODERATING INFLUENCE OF THE GREAT LAKES. TEMPERATURES WILL STRUGGLE TO REACH ZERO DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY... ESPECIALLY OVER THE INTERIOR SECTIONS OF WESTERN UPPER MICHIGAN. PLAN ON WIND SPEEDS OF 10 TO 20 MPH DURING MUCH OF THIS PERIOD... RESULTING IN BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILLS FROM 20 TO 30 BELOW ZERO OVER THE WEST HALF ON TUESDAY MORNING. EVEN MORE DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS OF 30 TO 35 BELOW ZERO ARE POSSIBLE OVER THE INTERIOR WEST HALF ON THURSDAY MORNING AND FRIDAY MORNING.

The cold front that was supposed to be gone on Thursday has now been extended into Friday morning.

What are the groups thoughts on this? Especially if it decides to stick around into the weekend?

I know it's early and anything can happen b/w now and then. But, it can't hurt to start thinking of a back-up plan. (McKeever and Tom's Lake cabins are both booked...)

With my current sleep system, I'm probably only good down to -5 or -10 (2 bags)
I guess, I shouldn't have sold my -15deg bag.

I checked Wilderness State Parks 24 person bunkhouse and 8 person cabin and they're booked up.

Hartwick Pines cabin is open, but I think it only sleeps 6 people, this would be a much longer drive for most. We could us this cabin and a few would have to tent it outside, which wouldn't be too bad, as one could stay warm inside until just before bed time then head out to their tents, if the park would allow this? I would not have a problem sleeping out in my tent. It will possibly be slightly warmer downstate as well?

There's a fine line between Fun and pure survival.

Weatherundergrounds forecast for Friday is H11 L-6 and Saturday H13 L6

My thoughts are that we do what is the smart thing...like you say, anything can happen between now and then. I would still like to head up that way. However, I am unfamiliar with what is available as far as accomodations and where. So, it's up to the homies that live there or are more familiar with alternative party spots. Any caves we could hunker down in?

Whaddya mean? - that info is not in the Encyclopedia Britannica! Nope, it's not!

So anyway, Mountainrunner & Honeybunches, in lieu of renting one of Wolfeye's finds, you have summer weight sleepy bags you could put your 10 degree bags inside of, don't ya. And don't zip your sleepy bags together cuz it'll be colder, not warmer! I mean, not to zip two bags together to make one, one for two people, I mean. You know what I mean!

Now if I could just find my dang tent...

I've never boinked a frozen man... and I don't wanna start now. So I think I can rule out that for now! And nope, neither of us have warm weather bags. We condensed into 10 degree bags that we hoped would get us through all seasons. We just sold a couple of bags last week. Shoulda waited a lil bit.

HB - I prolly have some warm weather bags. D and I are both using our 0 bags w/ one 35 bag draped over us (it's an oooold rectangular one). I bet we can come up with something for you both to use.

and, I have to disagree w/ CP. I find I sleep more comfortably when D and I zip our mating bags together.

So there is no confusion, this is honeybunches. Thanks for the offer of the bag. We will have to discuss that when I am there this week. MR says he doesn't need it, but I again, like all of my limbs and plan on keeping them for a few years. Both of our zippers are left zips so we can't zip together... but it's a nice thought.
