Also, we'll keep this thread going as the trip comes up so we can discuss the final parking plan. Dave and I will be driving north after the holidays. Depending on the time, maybe we'll head that direction so we can scout it out. I'll keep ya posted...” 10:06:51 AM 12/22/08 “Will this be a base-camping trip or will we travel each day? Also is the plan to shelter camp or tent camp? "If" I attend, I may arrive on Friday btwn 2:00-3:00pm or being I have Monday off I could come up on Saturday instead? I'll probably base my plans as to what the majority of the group plans to do. last edited: 12/22/08 1:54:36 PM” 2:02:03 PM 12/22/08 “I need directions...from St. Ignace. Thanks.” 3:51:54 AM 12/26/08 “nct - please check the trip info for details. wolfeyes - i'll get you some directions asap.” 2:21:47 PM 1/04/09 “I might need directions as well. Looking at a map, coming from St Ignace, its seems the most straight forward way of travel would be to take M-28 to Munising, then take H-13 south, to 440? US-2 would dip too far south, at H-13 yes, no? The Cut River Bridge is reopened for winter travel as well. Wasn't sure about this, but I just checked. I usually like to take US-2 to M-77, then up to Seney and M-28. last edited: 1/04/09 2:44:53 PM” 2:53:09 PM 1/04/09 “There really is no "best" route and the weather could possibly dictate travel direction anyway. For the LP travellers, the US-2 to M-77 to M-28 route is a pretty good choice. Any one of you (except Wolfeyes) is welcome to email me for my cell phone info and we can discuss travel routes.” 9:50:31 AM 1/05/09 “Directions (from the bridge) are in the Trip Info It would be handy if folks could post on here to let us know their ETA for the trip...” 11:58:38 AM 1/05/09 “I can be at the Snowmobile TH by approx. 12:00pm on Friday, But, I prefer to meet with others, and go in with a group. Be even better to go in with someone with a GPS. What I'm saying is, I might not be able to find our campsite/lake with my compass skills. I'm mainly an on-trail hiker, and not ashamed to admit it. I'd like to time my arrival with the majority of the group? I think, Cowpatty and Wolfeyes, may possibly be arriving early on Friday too? So maybe we could go back-in together. Then, if there's no big time snow falling, everyone else arriving after us, could just follow our sled tracks to the campsite? Maybe I'll purchase a GPS, just to be on the safe side, I've been wanting to get one anyway. I also doubt, that everyone signed on for this trip, is totally capable of finding the campsite, without the aid of a GPS, especially, in adverse conditions, like an intense snowfall. Hence, safety in numbers. last edited: 1/05/09 2:48:31 PM” 2:50:13 PM 1/05/09 “"I also doubt, that everyone signed on for this trip, is totally capable of finding the campsite, without the aid of a GPS, especially, in adverse conditions, like an intense snowfall." Personally, I would hope that only those who feel they are capable of finding the campsite (with or without GPS) are considering this trip. NCT - If you're an on-trail hiker, you might consider walking CR 440 east to the access road that I mentioned on the trip page. In the summer, it's a two-track that a car could drive right to Ironjaw Lake. It crosses the trail to Rim Lake. So, regardles of which camp I end up choosing, you'd be on the right track (pun intended, lol)” 7:04:49 PM 1/05/09 “Well I haven't gotten a good look at a map showing the Snowmobile TH in relation to our potential campsite. If it is indeed a straight shot to bisect the Trail system, then I shouldn't have a problem. We'll possibly all meet-up at the same time, so, this will make things a bit easier for some? I never overestimate my back-county skills, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it either. I've gotten turned around on so called marked trails,as have other TTers, so bushwhacking in deep snow and cold is not to be taken lightly. Looking at the map, CR440 runs east/west, we'll be hiking due north? from this road, so, even if one got turned around/lost, all you'd need to do is head due south to pick-up CR-440 again. Only problem then would be knowing whether to head east or west, back to the TH. I don't think any of this will even be an issue, but I always like to error on the side of caution. last edited: 1/05/09 7:35:53 PM” 7:47:00 PM 1/05/09 << back to Winter Hike - In Honor of Mataharihiker page
