check to make sure there arent any bans on bringing firewood, first

I think the ban is against transporting wood across state lines. Thrifty knows a lot about this.

I don't know when I will leave work, however I want to try to get down before the sun sets. Is Blackwell okay for Friday evening? This way we don't have to hike into a campsite.

not just state lines but certain counties too...coyote is in marion/johnson and the deam is in morgan/monroe...last i heard it was ok to transport between these counties, but if you're really worried about it you could always check with the dnr...as long as you burn all the wood bring or take the left overs back you should be fine anyway

Crash, coyote...you guys ever camp at Blackwell? I like the idea of staying here Friday evening because we don't waste any time hiking the 2 miles back from Peeper to meat up with those that will arrive Saturday morning. My question would be, if you have camped here, where is a good place to setup?

I have parked a dozen times here so I know the layout.

I know the last time Coyote was there, he said that they set up tents near the shelter and used the shelter. Might not be a bad plan incase of weather.

HA! Near the shelter. Where is that? When you pull in, is it right in front of you or to the right or left?

there's a shelter there?...i don't think i've ever seen it...keep in mind blackwell is a horse camp, though i wouldn't expect them to be too busy this time of year

Yeah, there's a shelter to the left as you turn left into the camp. The last time I camped there this time of year, there was only one other person there.

We are going to have a horse poop fight! Careful where you set your tent up.

Cool, must be a new structure. I think it has been 2 years since I have been down here.

Hey guys yes there is a shelter there and they have it fenced off so horses don't go in the area and the shelter has maybe 6 tables I'll bring a small burn barrel so we could have fire up close by the shelter.I don't think there will be many horse campers there. It should work just fine I'll put up some dry wood here in a few days.

i have in mind a great future trip. it would be at least a 3 day/ 2 night excursion, but i would rather make it 4 days/3 nights.

start at cutright boat ramp, and head east along the lake (alternately, take the hayes trail to saddle creek, then bushwack up saddle creek to the lake)

spend the time hiking east along the lake, with a beautiful lakeside campsite each night

there's a trail that goes from the far east side of the lake up to camp peeper. take that trail up and out to camp peeper, then hike out to the fire tower

or, do it in the opposite direction

i dont know why i didnt think of doing something like this before

great video. all secondhand stuff to the seasoned hiker, but crucial nonetheless, because theres lots of NON-seasoned hikers on the trails

HNF is an awesome place to bushwack for so many reasons. great lakeside campsites, relatively easy terrain, lots of landmarks, youre never very far from a trail or road if youre lost, no serious cliffs, not a lot of stickers and thorns when you go off trail, lots of neat stuff to discover that you wont find on the trail

my last trip to HNF was part-bush wack, part trail-hiking. i had a blast

Let's do the same for this trip. I am totally up for that.

I have never been down the pennsula trail before.

What is the quickest way to get there? Park at the 2nd lot and take the Grubb Ridge trail back?
wounded knee
7:17:52 AM
11/30/08

yes, the quickest way to the peninsula trail is the grubb ridge trail

however, the trip i just described is too long for this weekend. it's a minimum 3 full days/ 2 nights. we'd have to start early friday and wouldnt finish until late sunday

however, i do have an idea for a shorter bushwacking trip that's do-able for a short weekend

The campsites on the Peninsula can be a mess. Boaters use em for their bathrooms.

i dont think many boaters know about this site. it's not real obvious from the lake. coyote and i were there a few weeks ago, and it was pristine

I won't be able to go. Might as well get this out of the way now. My next shot at anything will be if mid to late February. I will be glad to get this behind me. Have fun!

I've been fortunate enough to kayak that strech of shoreline from Cutright to Saddle Creek. Indeed some beautiful areas...very steep terrain though in places along the shoreline. It would be some strenuous hiking for sure.

ive hiked the shoreline from saddle creek to the east side of the peninsula. it's not all that bad. sometimes, you have to go up in the woods a little bit because the bank is too steep, but otherwise it's very do-able
