Arclite: I wanna know about the sit-ups, or crunches, or whatever you did. 2100 a week, huh? Math would tell me that's 300 per day. (yup, I'm a high school graduate!)

So...all at one crack, or 150 twice a day? Just curious. I am starting to do the "crunches" where you barely raise your head up and make sure you don't pull up with your arms. I can do 100 of those fairly easy. So I was wondering. Also, specifics on the exercise(s)?

Okay I'm in. Per my scale at home 230# 5'10". And my Venture Scouts just won the lottery for Philmont 2001 so after the eight weeks it will be 52 more until I go.

Ten people have signed on so far (late comers are welcome). Let's see if we can all hang in there for the whole eight weeks!

I'm thinking it's probably a good idea to submit a goal of what you hope to lose. In my case, I'm shooting for 10-12 pounds. You don't have to post your actual weight, but a realistic goal will give you something to strive for.

As far as the money goes, I guess I'll have to volunteer to play trustee. Send your $5 to:

Hikin 3-5 aday, joggin1-2 aday, dont eat white stuff! dont drink liquids until 1 hr after meal. CHEW food a Lonnnnnnnnnnng time! Colon cleanse, once a month and like spam says pushemback! Its tuff for the first 2 months. DIETS do not work, Life style changes do. I have now lost 60 lbs! and am in the best condition in my life and still smoke! thats next! Good luck to you all! Yo!

Great thread...just discovered it!

According to the charts, my biggest problem has not being "overweight". It is being "underheight" ;-)

Weight Watchers for me. Lost over 70 lbs. since 1988. See Proof

June 1988 225 lbs (joined Weight Watchers)
March 1989 165 lbs (life member of WW in 8 months)
Aug 1998 203 lbs (crept up over the years. started losing in Sept)
Aug 1999 183 lbs (Llama Trip)
Today 152 lbs

The biggest difference for me has been from:
1. Attending weekly WW meetings
2. Exercise (motivated by backpacking!!)
3. Good breakfast & lunch, light dinner as early as I can
4. NOTHING AFTER DINNER.
5. (Several months of stomach trouble = -15 lbs)

BTW. My wife lost 80 lbs. a while back by walking 5 miles every morning and cutting back (not eliminating) chocolate. (1974-1999 Photo Diary)

twofootdrive - Philmont is great!

Unsolicited free-advice: I recommend you get down to your ideal weight and get in shape. They have weight limits now. Their blood pressure checks can keep you off the trail also...regardless of weight! (See my Troop 801 Philmont page and go to the Helpful Hints... link).

Consider the advice that Philmont gives about getting in shape to be the minimum! You need both cardiovascular and strength/endurance conditioning.

Jer what does not eating white stuff mean? No pasta and rice? I would love hiking 3-5 a day but there are onlt a few trails close to me here (without having to drive to Dayto area) and the trails get pretty boring after the 500 time I've walked them. Where are your favorite places to hike around Dayton? Also, do you have any info on the Ohio Power area in southern Ohio?

Nigal- If It IS white do not eat it, often and small portions. Anything white is sugar or made from processed flours and the likes.70% Lessen yer colorblind, LOL I have adopted a park witha 4mile loop and I do I almost everyday! I also do germantown reserve, Glen hellen, Clifton,Jon bryant anywhere I can. i hike the levy sometimes and lookin for a football stadium. Stairs are good with yer pack on. NO I do not have any info on Ohio power,yet. I go to mcconelsville to this little store and sign up once you sign up you have rights for life! Yo bear

Let's see, 5'8", 153#. Goal: 140#. Check's in the mail.

Lizs, try this for abs: face down, rest your weight on your forearms and toes. Elbows should be directly under shoulders, pevis slightly tilted (plank position). Lift hips and contract quads to form an inverted vee (raise your butt up), hold position for five sec, lower and hold for five. I know it sounds weird but these are killers! You'll definately feel that you've been working your abs. Watch out for capet burn on your elbows and refer to May 2000 issue of "Shape" mag. if you've got questions.

Okay, I've been outta town on a backpacking trip for the last few days, and just saw this thread. I would like to join. I have been steadily gaining weight over the last 4 years. Granted, alot of it is muscle, but not all! Now, alpine, you aren't a scammer, now are you? Take the money and run!! LOL
I would like to lose 10-15 lbs during this contest, and more like 50 overall - like Nigal said, I don't look obese, but I am 5'4" and 200 lbs. (yikes!) My way of changing my lifestyle is to eat more veggies/fruits, less fried stuff, and get out and move my arse on a trail for 30-60 minutes. Last summer, I ran 4-5 times a week about 1-2 miles and dropped weight quickly. This winter, I was bedridden due to valley fever, and am having a hard time coming outta the slump. Maybe this'll get me going!!! Okay, I'll weigh myself tonite and we'll get started!!!

Alpine, I'll be sending the money off this evening. I'm kinda going along with Sage, I need to lose around 30 - 40 pounds, but likely won't do that in 8 weeks. I just hope this will get the ball rolling for me and help me to get the behavior changes in place. We'll see, good luck to all!!

Ok I weighted myself today and I yam 198lbs. At 6ft. I'm looking to lose 10lbs. Everytime I do this I get to 192lbs and stop. Meaning I can't seem to get past it. Any ideas. My ck will be in the morning mail. Good Luck all you future stick people

I'm in. Check will be in the mail. I've been trying to lose weight for almost two months now and have lost 0 (zero, nada, nothing, nil, nicht) pounds. Although I'm a little thinner and have a little more muscles, I'm trying to actually lose weight so maybe a contest would be the motivation to really step up my workouts and improve my diet.

Hey! Knock it off! How's this scam going to work if you guys start speculating about my motives?! I'm just trying to cover the truck rental and buy a couple pizzas for the labor pool! Is that so wrong? Give me a break, I've got lots of closing costs to come up with!! By the way, anybody want to burn some calories by humpin' boxes (so to speak) for a few hours? 8^)

It's good to see a few more people signing up. Remember, in addition to losing weight, the key is to build better habits. That's why I suggest that you think twice about fad diets. Gimmicks like The Zone and Dr. Atkins (high protein/low carbs) diets can produce dramatic short term results, but they're not eating habits that people can sustain. The end result is that you gain it all back later. Besides, they're hard on your kidneys!

A pound of fat will always be equal 3500 calories. You gotta consume less and burn more. No shortcuts. Moderate sustained weight loss is the best approach.

Enough preachin'! Trust me, I'm no fitness freak! More later...

Sorry I skipped yesterday. Took the day off to recover my stolen bicycle. Yeah, like I need something else interesting in my life!

I'm a rail, a reed, a toothpick. Well at least that bike riding is slowly paying off. I'm 6'-1" 194lbs.

Lizs, not 300 per day; 420 per day, five days a week. The book has seven different exercises that concentrate on different torso muscles. I was doing 3 sets of twenty reps for each exercise. It took me about 30-45 minutes each of the five days. The length of time depends on whether you get a fast aerobic workout or a slower muscle concentration workout. It also depended on how much time I had to fit this workout into what was a pretty manic schedule. I wasn't getting to sleep sometimes until 11-12 at night and I get up at 5:00 to go to work.

That's right rad, I'm comin' up there at the end of June anyway. We'll be staying at my best friend's house in Alpharetta for a day before heading to the Roan Highlands. Maybe we can all get together for dinner or something. It would be nice to see your cute little butt.

Tom, I'm seriously considering reading glasses. If you stand real close, chances are you'd look great. But I get to lead. BTW didn't you mention Crusader Rabbit in an earlier post? Man, I haven't found anybody who remembers that show. It was my favorite!
