Does anyone know how Bob is doing since his wife died?

I talked to Bob a few days ago. Seems to be fine.

By the way, HWY321 to US19E is a better route.

Why is 321 to 19E a better route? It looks about the same elevation wise.

I am not saying your not right I am just curious as to why. I still have time to alter the trip and flip it to the other direction.

Mocs123 -- I really wasnt meaning N-S vs S-N, I just didnt want you to miss Laurel Falls.

Actually, I am going from Dennis Cove Road to Damascus, VA over new years weekend.

I have made an inquiry on Whiteblaze about the water availability on this section and the possibility of stopping at a shorter distance on Saturday.

Mocs, any information you can provide after this trip would be beneficial. If it goes as planned I will be hiking this section Dec 30 and 31st.

Thanks.

I just found out there was a new shelter built in 2006 10miles north of US19E called Mountaineer Falls Shelter. It looks very nice, I may have to stay there.

PS CrashBang, are you still thinking about coming down?

After talking to some more people and getting some better information on the new shelter, it is 8.4 miles from US19E so we could flip the trip and hike from Dennis Cove to US19E and stay at the shelter, or just find a campsite along the way.

I know its 2 different trips but wouldn't flipping mess up the logistics for people planning to do both trips - dennis cove to Damascus (if there are any people planning to do that). I have been thinking about doing both trips.

It is hard to tell with all of the relocatons along that route in the past few years, but here is the best I can gather from the signage in the area.

Saturday I did 17.4 miles to Elk River Campsite and I did 7.5 miles on Sunday.

Lot better than me, I went with my BSA troop to Shining Rock. It took 5 1/2 hrs. to go 4 miles (a lot are we there yet and how many miles we walked now) but they had a good time and did better hiking out.

Hey mocs, how long did it take you to do the 17.5 on Saturday? I'm still weighing my options for the New Year's Trip...

About 7.5 - 8 hours. It was pretty easy walking for the AT.

Thanks Mocs.

Let's see, 7.5 - 8 hours, multiplied by the 'mocs factor' equals 9-9.5 for the rest of us...
