"he's not the wittiest guy in alaska” - thriftyhiker

Is that supposed to be ironic?

Man, the liberal elitism is rampant.

They like telling tall stories in Alaska don't they

there was nothing tall about his stories, in fact they weren't even stories...he was just giving one word answers...you could tell greta was really uncomfortable

thrifty did you really think that or are you just being biased. I thought he was a pretty good guy. My wife who says she is voting for Obama (but that was during the dem primaries) came away with a great impression of him.

On another front, I saw a CNN story on troopergate where they discussed a series of emails (that have been released) that show the fired police commissioner (or whatever his exact title is) displaying repeated instances of insubordination (he does work at the pleasure of the governor and can be released without cause by the governoer anytime she felt like it). The final thing that brought about his release was that in a time when Palin was trying to reduce earmark requests and he was instructed that his request for additional federal funding was denied and that he was not to pursue it any further he went behind her back and flew to Washington to request it anyway. So there's your hero. An insubordinate employee who underhandedly resisted his boss' attempts to wean Alaska off the federal dole.

LOL, maybe on political threads to avoid being attacked or having their opinions irrationally dismissed everyone should start out each post with who they're voting for?

for the record it is mccain for me and i do like palin and i do think todd is a "pretty good guy" as well...i'm just stating i thought it was an awkward interview

Thrifty, I did partially mean biased as in preconceived to like him or not, but I also meant were you watching it with a bias as in what you hoped he might say (ie. would he jump on all her critics like a protective male or perhaps as a supportive husband and just gush about how good a vice president his wife would be). I didn't mean to dismiss your opinion, I just wanted to know how you saw it so different than me. And I freely admit I was already preconceived to like the guy because of what I already read about him.

I thought he came across just like any other normal guy (as in non-politician, non-media hound) being interviewed by the national press. Someone who isn't trying to sell a packaged self-image or trying to wheedle something out of you. Someone who says this is who I am, take it or leave it.

Palin credits electoral success to witchhunter
John Byrne
Published: Wednesday September 17, 2008

In perhaps one of the strangest twists to date in the story of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a video now shows the governor crediting her electoral success to a preacher who claims to successfully hunt witches.

The speech, shown below, was filmed in June. Palin describes the visit of Pastor Thomas Muthee to the Wasilla Assembly of God in 2005.

"As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he's so bold. And he was praying 'Lord make a way, Lord make a way,'" Palin remarked.

“And I'm thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are," she continued. "And he’s praying not 'oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,' no, he just prayed for it. He said, 'Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that’s exactly what happened.'"

“So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church,” she added.

In 1988, Pastor Muthee and his wife traveled to Kenya after being "called by God." Setting up shop in the basement of a grocery store, they claim to have brought 200 people "to God" and away from the town's "spiritual oppression."

The source of the oppression? Witchcraft, Muthee says. When researching the community, they found that a woman named "Mama Jane" ran a divination clinic that drew a large following in the town.

“We prayed, we fasted, the Lord showed us a spirit of witchcraft resting over the place,” Pastor Muthee said.

Muthee made his experiences into a video called Transformations, which documents his "spiritual warfare" against demons and occult practices. Spiritual warfare is more common in Latin America and Africa, where the concept of day-to-day demons has a stronger hold. The video's trailer is available here.

The film -- and Muthee's practices -- received treatment in a 1999 Christian Science Monitor article.

"According to accounts of the witchhunt circulated on evangelical websites such as Prayer Links Ministries, after Pastor Muthee declared Mama Jane a witch, the townspeople became suspicious and began to turn on her, demanding that she be stoned," the London Times noted Tuesday. "Public outrage eventually led the police to raid her home, where they fired gunshots, killing a pet python which they believed to be a demon."

Palin's speech accompanied the Wasilla Assembly of God's Masters' Commission, which the church's pastor said will allow Alaska to become a refuge for American evangelicals during the coming "end of days" -- or Armageddon.

Odd that the witches thing took place twenty years ago yet the "praying over" thing took place a few years ago. I wonder if she even knew him then?

I told the witch doctor I was in love with you
I told the witch doctor I was in love with you
And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do

Ooo eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang

Ooo eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang
Ooo eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang

You've been keeping love from me just like you were a miser
And I'll admit I wasn't very smart
So I went out and found myself a guy that's so much wiser
And he taught me the way to win your heart

My friend the witch doctor, he taught me what to say
My friend the witch doctor, he taught me what to do
I know that you'll be mine when I say this to you

Flash in the pan and not the long-burning log they needed. There's always the next election cycle.

But then a funny thing happened: Palin lost some of her luster. Since Sept. 13, Palin's unfavorables have climbed from 30 percent to 36 percent. Meanwhile, her favorables have slipped from 52 percent to 48 percent. That's a three-day net swing of -10 points, and it leaves her in the Sept. 15 Diageo/Hotline tracking poll with the smallest favorability split (+10) of any of the Final Four. Over the course of a single weekend, in other words, Palin went from being the most popular White House hopeful to the least.

GOP senator: A 'stretch' to say Palin is qualified

WASHINGTON - Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said his party's vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, lacks foreign policy experience and called it a "stretch" to say she's qualified to be president.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview published Thursday by the Omaha World-Herald. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

Could Palin lead the country if GOP presidential nominee John McCain could not?

"I think it's a stretch to, in any way, to say that she's got the experience to be president of the United States," Hagel said.

McCain and other Republicans have defended Palin's qualifications, citing Alaska's proximity to Russia. Palin told ABC News, "They're our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

Hagel took issue with that argument. "I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,'" he said. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."

Hagel, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been a vocal critic of the Bush administration since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

It doesn't surprise me that Haegel would say that. He would have liked to have been Obama's VP choice. Also since he opposes Iraq then he probably opposes McCain and sees his personal sphere of influence being reduced under McCain and increased with Obama.

the actual quote is that you can see Russia from an Island in Alaska. That's a factual statement but it doesn't really mean anything. I am happy to see that the democrats are being as stupid in campaigning as they are in governing. They would be better served by quoting her actual statement than by constantly quoting Tina Fey's joke line "I can see Alaska from my house." They are changing the subject from what a candidate said to what a comedian said. Smart people discount what comedians say.
