Removing Old Sealer “Hey everyone - new here... and of course have a question. I want to re-seal the seams on my tent, but it says to clean off the old sealer first. I do see some flaking from the old sealer. What's the best way to clean them off?” 4:12:08 PM 4/18/08 “what kind of seam sealant? there are a few kinds that ppl use.” 4:15:44 PM 4/18/08 “it's Mcnett Seam Sure” 6:37:49 AM 4/19/08 “forget it. it's on forever.” 7:25:53 AM 4/19/08 “I might just try to get those areas that are flaking off and reseal them. I know McNett carries a seam cleaner, but I live an hour or so away from any place that carries it and I didn't know if there was any other way to get the stuff off. How about just resealing over the old stuff?” 8:05:12 AM 4/19/08 “test it out -but- if you put the old stuff on the new stuff it might dissolve it a little and it will bond well. just be sure to clean the surface first... a little ethanol should work but test it on the tent fabric place first in a spot that doesn't matter.” 9:19:52 AM 4/19/08 experiment “wd-40 is a solvent that cuts pretty weell but I have never used it on tents so watch out if you do it might weaken some fabrics” 9:29:24 AM 4/20/08 “some of those solvents will damage the waterproofing of the fabric. That would kind of defeat the purpose of sealing the seams.” 10:23:42 AM 4/20/08 “i did not know wd40 was a solvent.” 11:13:37 AM 4/20/08
