Hey Bro,

couple things on Alaska. Which maps do we need and wheres the best place to get them? I'm curious how doing the total mountain house meal thing worked out for you last year.

I'm duplicating this post on the AK gear thread.

Hey fridge. Nemster and I are thinking about doing a trip this fall at Mount Rogers. Where is a safe place to park these days? Is Scales safe for overnight parking?

Thanks. What about the overnight parking for backpackers in the park itself?

Campground Host?

Not sure, but now that you say that, I guess we should take my Outback. I've never taken the road to Scales.

Its a #&%!$ to get back there... they get horse trailors in, but most of the vehicles you see there are 4x4.. its better to park down at the canmpground and hike the 2-3 miles in...

scales is not bad unless you have no experience driving on a FS road. They take pull behind campers up there and scales will be full of them late fall.
There is a Host there Mr Blevins from Marion Va. He has been staying there every year up until the winter months. He will have the big camper.
The state park is of course good too and easy for those who live in a big city.

I kinda got that info from weather.com.....I was thinking more of a personal view from someone in the area.

I do it any time any weather. Every day is different when you get above 5000 ft. If cloudy you will not get the views. There are plenty of wild ponies everywhere. Springs are all flowing as good as they get. If you do decide to do it let me know as I could meet you for a night easily. Grayson Highlands state Park will be the safest place to park your vehicle. What area did you have in mind? Wilson Creek Wilderness area, MtRogers Summit area, Wilburn Ridge area, Lewis Fork Wilderness area. Pine Mt area.

I was just trying to keep an eye on the weather a little bit. I dont mind weather conditions, but I wouldnt go if it was going to rain the whole time either.

Probably Mt. Rogers area, was thinking about a loop on the AT and Pine Mtn trail.

Send me your email address.

I met a backpacker here in Nashville who stated he would like to hike Mt Rogers with someone who knew the area.

I told him I would send you his email address and if anyone knew Mt Rogers, it woudl be you.

I remember one day in Alaska. Fridge said it was only going to be four miles. I am pretty sure it was just a bit more than four mile but then again it was Alaska so it might have only been two.
