I'll be driving through Denver in a big hurry late Friday afternoon, hoping to get to Stevens Gulch before it gets dark.

I can do whatever needs to be done after our hike on Saturday morning. We are car camping at the foot of Elbert/Massive so it's not a big deal to show up after dark Saturday evening.

My car will comfortably carry 3 people & gear - uncomfortably 4 or 5. It has very low ground clearance.

I miss Colorado!

It has very low ground clearance.

im guessing you wont be able to make the road up to the high trailhead at crestone? i'm renting a subaru outback, so we should be able to get everyone up in 2 trips

I'll be happy to assist with ground transport from DIA to trailhead on Saturday - and vice versa on the back end.

There's no way my car is getting up to the trailhead at the Crestones, and I have my doubts about an Outback. An Outback is a good idea, but it will be challenged due to being so low to the ground. It's not that far if we have to walk.

Reach around said back end.

tj, have you been on that road since its been improved? maybe it will be passable now.

if we have to park at the lower trailhead, it just means we'll have to hike out the same day we climb crestone

I was there in August 2006.

I'd heard that road called the second worst in CO way back, and it wasn't that bad so I'm guessing it had been improved.

it looks pretty compacted but i have an outback and it does not have a lot of ground clearance. so while i would not doubt the car's ability to get through the terrain getting OVER it will at the very least require some slow and careful driving.

well, i was going to take a "we'll find out when we get there" approach to the "will we or wont we be able to make it up to the upper trailhead of south colony lakes" issue.

buuuuuuuuuuuut................since SOMEONE is obsessed with every minute detail with the trip ~nudge~

i posted the question at 14ers.com forum. im sure we'll have answers shortly

i got some replies very quickly. most are doubtful of making it all the way, but here's one cautiously optimistic reply:

At the very least you will definitely be able to make it up to the main stream crossing which is over 2 miles up the road. That leaves you a 3 mile hike to the upper TH, then another mile to S.Colony Lakes camping areas. I drove my low clearance Saab that I was driving at the time and made it that far.

if we only have a 4 mile hike out, down hill, most of it road-walking, i would have no problem doing that, driving to capitol trailhead, then hiking in to capitol lake. itll be a long day, but not bad

remember that we have to get BACK as well. so if we make the stream crossing we have to make it again. a saab isn't 4wd, is it? ask them if a 2wd high-clearance SUV would work. there are lots of those for rent. i can't find a 4x4 rental from a standard vendor.

he said he made it TO the crossing. i imagine that means he stopped right before the stream

ya, that's 4wd material and i am pretty my subaru wagon would NOT make it. the front-end of the car will prolly bottom out as you edge the nose of the car into the slab.

are you sure we don't have too many people for the car?

4assmonkey had a good suggestion this weekend. we could get one of those rooftop cargo bags... they aren't that expensive and could be folded down and checked with the luggage. that would mean we for soure could get gear for 5 in the car and perhaps a bit more.

this weekend, crash, you were in basically the same car -and- you saw how packed it was with gear for four. now that was a car-camping trip with a cooler but people will have more gear and food. so i think it's clear that the car is going to be PACKED with gear for five.
