y2 you are so brain dead. The unions have been at the top of these discussions here ever since the the bailout for the automakers was brought up. The unions are 1/2 of the problem. management is the other half. neither should be rewarded for their selfishness

Where is the auto industry doing better - northern union states or southern right to work states.

Where is the banking industry doing better - New York or North Carolina?

maybe the South is gonna do it again

Well the Jeep will get fixed. The transfer case was F'ed up so that will be replaced as well as the front axel and a lot of the parts that hold the front tire in place.

The police car I hit was 2 months old and the damage I caused totaled it. Frame was cracked in two places.

The adjustor said that he has never seen frame damage like this and thought may Jeep would be totaled as well. He said while the damage to the Jeep is bad, he was surprised it was not worse.

I get a new front tire out of it as well!

Fine, cut 'em loose and float 'em out to sea along with Quebec.

The southern states receive more in federal aid than they pay in..............good riddance.
Northern Virginia can be annexed by Maryland and we can keep more of our tax money at home.

They are "no rights for workers" states with a hungrier workforce........kinda like Mexico, but not as desperate.

North Carolina is a right to work state and it works. There is no great outcry here for Unions. people shouldn't be forced to pay a mob boss for the right to work

I just have my doubts that chapter 11 will work. Read something else today that the finance packages aren't there due to credit crunch and lack of confidence. That's without dealing with the fact that consumers won't want to go for GM when they don't know if they'll be there, but know Toyota will.

of course that look for cheaper workers, but non-union shops aren't even close to Mexican sweat shops. In fact, I bet the union shops are sweating a lot more than the non-union shops.

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

Well it looks like all automakers are going to be in a battle for survival here.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/business/economy/19ports.html

And for the first time, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Nissan have each asked to lease space from the port for these orphan vehicles. They are turning dozens of acres of the nation’s second-largest container port into a parking lot, creating a vivid picture of a paralyzed auto business and an economy in peril.

You didn't think they would sit in coach on a crowded Southwest plane, did you?

They probably drove their foreign made luxury cars down to the airport as well. Screw that, limos picked them up.

One of the Senators just asked the GM CEO how much money he really needs to run to March 30. The CEO didn't know! The Sen then asked him worst case scenario... CEO still didn't know. He said it depended on a lot of things such as suppliers and...

OMG I wanted to just smack him!

1 proposal being talked about now.
Big 3 have to propose plans to Congress before they vote on a bail out. Dec 8th is the date for the plans to be heard.

Still talking probably will change as the day goes on.

How many CEOs getting the TARP treatment have gone the $1-a-year route? And the board members.... and the CFOs and the CTOs....

Can they not do this crap in a room and then come out with a plan. All this trial by TV is gonna do the big three as much damage as anything.

Not saying it should be secret - full minutes released after the event - but it's crazy when you're trying to build confidence.

I think on of the real big reasons why Toyota is doing so well in sales now is that people aren't looking for the biggest SUV or fastest sports car anymore - instead they're looking for something cheap, reliable, and thrifty on gas. Toyota has always been legendary for reliability, and they've got several very cheap, very high MPG models. That's what sold me on my Corolla. I couldn't care less about anything outside of those three factors, and the Corolla or Honda Civic ended up being my two choices.

Wow, check it out. KBB top 10 Resale Value Cars came out and of the ten six are Toyota products. The Yaris (the cheapest thing they make) came in 8th and retains 57% over five years.

Not a single domestic on it.

As an interesting (to me) side note, I brought my '98 Tacoma (270,000 miles, no problems) to the dealership yesterday. The purpose of the visit was to inspect the frame for rust, re: the Toyota buyback program. As it turns out, the frame is rusted so I should get some correspondence next week offering to buy it back for 1.5 times book value. This should amount to about 7 - 7.5K. Pretty good service, I'd say:)

My '96 Chev truck left me walking on the road last wednesday. Tow truck took it home.
I might can fix the transmission, if not, time for a Tacoma, or maybe do without a truck.
