We must help WK keep this from happening. Pretty soon he will be attending soccer matches and PTA meetings. We've got to help him! Brain storm with me and maybe we can figure out a solution.... ;)

Turning into one????...I think you are mistaken he already is one...just like you and nearly every other person on this forum.

If you practice the act of American style consumerism you iz a yuppy.

Yuppie=Young Urban Professional

I'm urban but neither young nor professional.

I'm not any of those, but WK, Jimmy San, et al, no doubt:)

That's the original meaning but it really doesn't mean only young nor professional anymore. Just like laminate counter tops are called Formica by almost everyone no matter the manufacturer.

If you just have to have the latest toy and go out and buy it even if you already have 1 or more of them already then you iz a yuppie.

I think the term goes back at least to the 80's.

I'm no yuppy-----

SC= Trailor Queen Hippie LOL
But all that is besides the point, we need to save WK. We need to kidnap him and take him backpacking!! :)

Changing definitions and related realities seems to be all the rage.

Middle age people can not be "yuppies" by definition, nor can truck drivers.

I'm young and a professional, but definitely not urban. You had me scared there for a minute.

In the '80s yuppies were into material goods like BMW's and such.......money, money, money.

You may be a young professional Zac, but the kind of material goods you are into are utile instead of "profile".

PTA meetings are not a yuppie thing but a responsible parent/ community member thing. They are a way to be involved in your child's education and make sure they get the best they can. PTA is not made up of folks who are stylish, young, preppie, professionals but regular old moms and dads and teachers who show up in their nasty old jeans or the work cloths they've been wearing all day, and eat cookies while trying to get out of there as quickly as possible so they can go home and relax after a long day. I sincerely hope WK goes to PTA meetings when it's time. It's not a bad thing SC. It's very possitive. Forget all you ever learned about PTA on tv.

But then again, I live in a blue collar community. Maybe in other areas PTA is a yuppy thing?

I used to be a yuppie, but now that my kids are almost grown I'm going back to being a hippie, or maybe I'll try my hand at slacker.

Dang right Sass.
PTA meetings seemed to me to be a sort of equalizer. Whether the parents were professionals or not they pretty much all dressed casual and mixed as equals all interested in what was going on.
At "our" elementary school, which is a five-minute walk from where I sit, those meetings were mobbed.
The parent participation at the elementary and middle(right next door) is sometimes standing room only.

And soccer matches?
On soccer days there will be maybe six games on the fields between the elementary and middle at one time.
Then there is the kid baseball.
These games are great for socialization where kids meet kids and parents meet parents.
Not only is physical fitness promoted but friendships are made.

There are more criteria, however, that Mr Knee more than meets.

PTA and soccer are not "yuppie" activities.

They are urban/suburban family things and are actually quite inexpensive pursuits.

I can see certain expensive vehicles being a sign of yuppydom.

TREMENDOUS SUV's.....ain't that a yuppie thang?
Yuppydom is about making lots of money and showing it.

Hey WK, are you really looking at minivans?

We have lugnut #2 cooking right now, set to be done on Valentine's Day, and will be wanting some more carrying capacity than our current vehicles allow. I'm a little undecided on even what type of vehicle to be looking at.

I think that owning a minivan puts me more into the soccer mom category than yuppy. Now if we bought a Passat or Outback, then I could see it.

BTW, we got the van. Hubcap, we purchaced the Hyundai Entourage.

http://www.hyundaiusa.com/vehicle/entourage/trim/limited.aspx

Limited model with premium entertainment package. The knocked it down to 26,750 plus gave us 5K for our Volvo. I wanted more for the trade in, but the dealer said this was a gift. He was right, the car has been nothing but trouble for us. I just pumped 750 into it fixing various issues.

We pick it up on Monday, hopefully.

Owning a minivan is not yuppie.

Making lots of money and showing it off with expensive cars/toys is yuppie.

Y'all can't change definitions without permission of grammar police.

So the "young urban professionals" ain't so young anymore?

"affluent" - Generously supplied with money, property, or possessions; prosperous or rich.

n. Informal
A young city or suburban resident with a well-paid professional job and an affluent lifestyle.

yuppie 381 up, 95 down

a very arrogant well put together young urban professional who you more than likely will find wearing gucci and prada with a large bank account which they love to brag about. You can find them drinking Starbucks, living in a one bedroom apartment in a city where they will pay 1000-2000 a month for and spending another 3000 a month on their credit cards. They brag about their designer clothes and love to flaunt them , as well as their wealth. They look down upon anyone who isnt as wealthy or high status as they are. Men are likely to be found wearing designer suits, gucci preferably with slicked back or well cut hair. The women will be wearing prada/gucci and fendi. The most arrogant concieted #&%!$s on the planet

a very arrogant well put together young urban professional who you more than likely will find wearing gucci and prada (nope, don't own any of that) with a large bank account (it's not that big) which they love to brag about. You can find them drinking Starbucks, (ratfilth, bleeeee) living in a one bedroom apartment (own a house) in a city (suburb) where they will pay 1000-2000 (by choice to pay off house faster) a month for and spending another 3000 (not even close) a month on their credit cards. They brag about their designer clothes (all bought at Khol's) and love to flaunt them , as well as their wealth. They look down upon anyone who isnt as wealthy or high status as they are. Men are likely to be found wearing designer suits, (I own 1 and paid 500 for it...is that expensive?) gucci preferably (not) with slicked back or well cut hair (I cut my hair myself). The women will be wearing prada/gucci and fendi. (she better not have any of this stuff) The most arrogant concieted #&%!$s on the planet”

WK we know you are not like that. I have some great friends that say they are yuppie even though they do not act anything like you describe. They just happen to make good money and pay off the credit card each month.

I have a great nephew that acts like your description and I don't like being around him.
