I got an email from the campground. The group sites are what we need. The first 8 are included, after that it is $5 per person.

I will look at the map later and reserve at least two sites. She indicated that they do not expect a lot of people to be camping that weekend.

My wife and I will be there a day or so early and staying in one of the cabins. She's not the type to rough it too much.

We plan on staying a few days afterwards as well. No set plans, just playing it by ear.

So are we going to scavage for food? We can gather worms, snails and nuts. Or we can craft a throwing stick and try to kill rabbits and other small creatures.

I saw a way to build a fish trap by driving sticks into the water in such a way that fish swim in but can't swim out. I don't know how that would work.

On our last few hikes, my son has been trying to convince me to let him kill a snake and then eat it. I told him that we need to wait till we're starving to do that. :)

BTW, I'm content to eat dehydrated foods for this trip. I don't have an overwhelming desire to eat worms and snails. But, it would be neat to catch a rabbit or fish and eat it.

In my fantasy book I had a scene where my main character used a fish pen like you described to catch invisible fish :) I had to take it out because the story went in a different direction, but I saved it to use in book 2 if I ever write it.

I had car trouble at Mt. Pisgah
CG. Soneone spent about 1.5 hours working on the car and finally got it started. So while it was still running I drove it home. Can't see my way to make another long trip just now.

Chili is going to put together an agenda and class list, then he will be contacting folks to lead a session/class...details will be coming soon...he has been extremely busy at work and just hasn't had alot of time to devote to this. I guess if someone else wanted to take the initiative and set up an agenda and assign folks to do the classes, it would be much appreciated. There were alot of ideas given at the start of this thread. I am not sure about the campsite reservations. I know some people have reserved cabins and i know that it was determined that there would not be a problem getting sites for this weekend. I will check with him to see what has been done with that or what needs to be done.

sorry for not following this whole thread and not wanting to read it, but is there a list somewhere of what are considered the "basic skills?" Those might be the same skills to teach to boy scouts, so I'd be interested in seeing the list if there is one.

I have posted some of this on WhiteBlaze for info:

I'm planning on a little 2-day jaunt from Max Patch (Max Patch Road) to Hot Springs starting Thurs 11/8 and getting into Hot Springs late afternoon on Friday 11/9. I will prob just do a dayhike north of HS on Sunday. Anyone wanting to join?

Day 1: Wife will be dropping me off at Max Patch Road early Thursday. She will be going on to Ashville for sight-seeing/etc. I have tentatively planned to stop near Walnut Mt Shelter of the first night. I will be tenting so I could go further. What about Catpen Gap?

Day 2: will be a general downhill hike into Hot Springs where wife and I will be staying in a cabin (she ain't roughing it).

Water sources that I see are:
2.6 miles - Roaring Fork Shelter (I assume this is the new one. The map show close to Lemon Gap)
3.7 miles - creek
6.0 miles - stream
7.6 miles - Walnut Mt Shelter (might stay here, tent)
11.5 miles - Big Rock Springs
17.4 miles - Deer Park Mt Shelter
20.6 miles - Hot Springs

Any news on any of these water sources being dry? It looks like there is NORMALLY a lot of water in this section. Any good campsites between Walnut Mt Shelter and Bluff Mt? General comments/suggestions?

When will the TT festivities start on Fri?

OK..Chili will be nailing this down this weekend. If you have already volunteered to do a class/skill, send him an email and tell him what you are going to do. He will work out the schedule. As far as the campsites, he has been told that there should be no prob getting a group site that weekend. If you are worried, feel free to reserve one.
Several folks have already reserved cabins.

We are both taking Friday off work so we will head over to Hot Springs as soon as possible Friday morning.

There have been several suggetions as to what skills to show during this trip. When Chili gets the schedule worked out, he will post it here so everyone can see what will be done.

No problem on sites.

I will have the agenda posted by the end of the weekend.

I figure if I could salvage TC2 in less than 24 hours, I still have 10 days before I #&%!$ this up.

to be honest, when this first came up I thought it would be mostly ad lib. It would be nice to have some organization, but I wouldn't want anyone to put theirselves out to much for this.

Hyway, my thinking is that the segments have to have some structure as to "what" and "when". Other than that, it will be the usual TT trip. Just sort of make the rules as we go.
