My family loves shrimp boils. For some reason I don't. I think I got a bad shrimp that way once.
The whole incident of me not eating boiled shrimp did lead to a good recipe though. Heat a little olive oil over high heat, add minced garlic and ginger and stir until very aromatic, toss in peeled deveined shrimp and a big splash of ponzu ( soy sauce with citrus juice) and sear just until done. Tasty stuff.

Shouldn't a basic skill be knowing how to put together a makeshift still using a trekking pole, platypus hose, water bottle, and pepsi stove?

Ah, you have longer bow season. Bow season starts in mid September followed by black powder in early October, the regular rifle in mid October, that lasts until the second week of December, followed by a week of late black powder. It's a wonder I get any Christmas shopping done.

Anyway back to our regularly scheduled thread.

Any interest in a contingency trip? Say, on a Sun - Tues?

I would most likely bring my oldest daughter too (9).

I'd love to make this trip if I had the time. I have a elk hunting trip planned for oct. and I have a daughter starting college this fall. Between those two I ain't got any vacation time. Sounds like a fun trip.

looking forward to this. Just got a great big hug from my daughter, who is reading over my shoulder, when I told her she was going on this trip.

November has an R in it so I should be able to get local oysters. They are much better than the gulf oysters from my totally unbiased point of view. Not sure what the shrimp situation is in november but I am sure I can get some. Along with crab legs and clams. I am not into frying fish, so unless you want to bake them in a solar oven I won't be bringing any of that.

I'm down as a 'maybe'.
570 miles one way.
I don't know about that, maybe if someone near me would share driving, or maybe I could fly into Knoxville or Greenville?

Anyone else flying in? We might could share a rental car.

I have to find a way to get to this one. Since Monday is a holiday, I think I'd be better off leaving after school on Friday and getting there late Fri. I'll have a 5 hr drive + timezone so that would be about 9:30 local on the arrival time. Sunset is 6:35, btw.

SS - if I'm able to go, you can ride with us the last half. It's probably 4.5-5 hrs to my house and then 5 hrs to the TH. PS, Jeremy (co-worker) was in Long Beach on Wed. I imagine that's pretty close to you. We're doing a church down there.

Sorry meangreen, but the date is set. This always happens where we miss the window for someone, but I wanted to hit the three day weekend on this.

ChuckD, bro, I hope you can make it, because everyone is wanting a course/refresher on map reading.

One idea that floated this past weekend, was to add a taste test on various freezer bag meals. I usually wind up cooking the same things over and over but would like to sample damn near everything in sarbears cookbook.

I will drive up Friday also. Should be there by noon.

if you haven't eaten at the Smokey Mountain Dinner you need to. They have some good food esp the skillet breakfast...wow what a feast that is. Last time I was there I saw a guy get one, he couldn't eat it all.

The hike on the AT going north out of Hot Springs is nice. You can hike to Hwy 25 and hitch a ride back into town or setup a shuttle. Going south looks good to, either way it is a climb up,up and away

I am going to set a couple hikes as well. I am thinking the map reading might be better served either on the AT or out of the forest campground a few miles down the road. I am going over there in a couple weeks to talk to the folks at BMO about what we are going to do and get some ideas.

So Friday is a travel day for everyone and things won't really get going until later in the day? How far of a hike are you planning to get to camp Friday night? Is it a basecamp or more hiking on Sat?

I just checked out the trip page again. Public campground, so that answers my arrival question. Same place as the spa. Hmmm, that might convince my wife to come along on this one. The baby will be over 1 by then. We could actually all come as a car camp for this. The kids will be out of school on Mon. It wouldn't kill me to take a day off. I'm liking the sound of all of this more and more.

I am thinking I will have a fire going and bring hotdogs/sausages to roast over an open fire Friday night. As you arrive, you can cook your own dogs and I will put together a pot of chili for a chilidogs.

That should be simple enough and people can eat when they get there.

hyway, sounds like we have the eastern kids trip we talked about a week or two ago. Now, I've got to make it happen. My biggest hangup for Nov trips is that my middle daughters b'day in around Thanksgiving. This means we have to back her party up to around Veterans Day..... I want this one to turn into a family trip.

dayhiker - 7.5 boy, 2weeks shy of 6 girl, maybe 14 month girl. I can see me bringing the 2 big kids alone, or my wife too, or all 5 of us.

It'll be funny to see Laurel at still 4 towering over my son who will be 8 in late Feb. I'm 5'-10" and my wife is 5'-0". Our kids are typically around the 10th percentile on the height and weight growth charts.

Laurel's been in the 98th percentile for height since she was born. Her weight's been near the bottom of the charts though. What amazes me is that this little girl has better abs, quads and biceps than me already. She's lean and muscular.
