thank you for the offer SC
at this time Mr. Magoo will stay with us until I think he is ready to go to his new home. I get very picky when it comes to placement of my animals. I am willing to travel to find him a good home!

mapes, you have a cage for him?

I don't take large birds any more due to the fact that my job is so much farther away I have less time to devote to them (which is why I have no birds right now) but I still tend to small birds wehn they come in. I still have the cages though which I will probebly end up donating since I dont see when I will have more time for birds.

Good luck with Mr. Magoo, give him a few days to settle in a quiet corner as he will be stressed out for sure by the change....the big birds they are like children and must be handled carefully. If he needs wings and nails clipped, do it before he comes home with you so that all the scary stuff is over with at once for him. I wish you all the luck in the good luck in the world with hime, birds, they will steal your heart :)

as for finding him a new home, the group I work with is very picky as well, they check the homes of any planning to adopt a large bird to make sure they first have a suitable home, cage, eniroment etc and the new owneres have to take a class in caring for a large bird before the bird is ever released to them.

ok here is the story:

I got a call from a friend to please go and check out this woman who ownes a dog grooming place. She has a lot of birds and some of them look pretty bad. one cockatoo was given to her by some stranger and was very badly abused and she will not take it to the vet.

so i go in and pretend that i want my dog groomed. as I was looking around i see all the birds. she has aleast 30 birds. some of witch are large breads. cockatoos and african grays...
all of them look in bad shape and are all either bald or loosing the feathers.
but i ask about this one bird (mr magoo).
she said that she go the bird two weeks ago form some stranger and he said that he found it after the owner took a bat to it and tried to pull his wings off. I asked if she took it to the vet? she said NO
thats was what got me very upset

i talked her into giving me the bird.

the problem with this situation is, she is best friends with a woman that does a lot of rescue for us and takes our chickens and rabbits... i did not want to create waves for my company

but it seems that someone beat me to the punch...i got a call from my frined and she said that 20 mins after I left the ASPCA showed up and was in the store for over an hour. I am not sure why they were there but I did call and inform that of what I did. i did take pics. so anyway there is the story. it was a GREAT rescue!

stanlee. you need to read the story. the woman says that a stranger found the bird after someone attatcked it and gave it to her. but she says she has only had it for 2 weeks but never took it to hte vet. then after i talked her into giving me the bird she tells me not to wash the cage because the bird has lived in it for the last 15 years.

if a stranger gave it to her 2 weeks ago, how does she know the history of the bird?

this was the first time he came out of the cage.
we would laugh and he would dance and skeerch

he has really warmed up to us.

Mapes good luck...as you know we rescue pups (chessie retrievers to be specific) the cool thing I have found is that when they are rescued they tend to be more "dedicated". Our latest (Elizabeth) is a hoot....she thrives on attention and if she excapes from my daughter's room I will awake to her snoot on my pillow sound asleep and happy.

WOW what a day at work. It was a great try at a great rescue. I just wish it had a happy ending. This is my first failed rescue.

I got a call for a raccoon in tower one brooklyn side. Well I have never been inside a bridge before so i was excitited. I got a police escort onto the bridge. Well it was not what i thought it would be.
WAY DIFFETRENT

I had to crawl into areas that i swear were just like submarines. portal AKA cells. ladders that went down into darkness.

I found the raccoon and had to climb down 7 flights. But I was unable to grab him and he fell 25 feet further down. I did not want him to fall any further so I called ESU. but by the time they got there he fell 75 stright down. all i could find was blood. it was to dark and just to hard of a rescue to continue. I spent 3 hours in the tower on my hands and knees in dust and dirt only to fail :(

I know where I went wronge.
I was so scared of the height and of getting bite that i was not as aggresive as I should have been.
so it was a great start to a rescue with a vey sad ending.

ps.I got bite by a dog later that day :(

sorry mr raccoon I tried.
