I remember how Uncle Sugar gave the California Raisin Growers $5 million to advertise the dancing raisins in Japan back in the 80s. Your Tax Dollars At Work -- no lie. They had a problem because the dancing raisins were scaring the Japanese children and they were going to study it to find out Why.

Can you imagine the aerospace sector's yearly take, in comparison? You can bet it's Astronomical. Perhaps one of the regulars here could get us up to speed on 'Son of Star Wars'. How much per missile has been spent? I remember numbers being thrown around in the range of $200 billion for ten years(?).

I wonder what the profit margin is on a nuclear attack sub from our friends at Electric Boat. There really isn't a way to fight an international guerrilla war with submarines, unless you turn the Asian subcontinent into 'a sheet of glass'.

I'm sure the folks over at Savannah River Site will be more than happy to supply the tritium. I was just reading how they're ramping up to go back into production as we speak. That's definitely not cheap.

One other thing I find Truly amazing is the incredible gift the pharmaceutical industry received from the Republicans with that Medicare drug bill. If that isn't amended, the cost will be completely insane in just a short while.

Then there is the Estate Tax issue. You can talk about 'principle' all you want, but if that isn't allowed to sunset, someone will be making up for the shortfall. That's going to be another insane amount.


But this is all anecdotal --- we need hard numbers.

“If anyone gets a break for whatever reason, that's still less money in the Treasury. It has to come from somewhere... or be borrowed. The effect is the same. There's talk of bringing back offsets. When legislators want to spend for something, they would have to take from some other program. Quite fiscally conservative and applauded by many (including Yours Truly), but it kills the crap out of pork-barrel spending and royally pisses off incumbent politicians.

I do remember the Flat Tax debate when Forbes was running. If charitable contributions weren't deductible any longer, that was the beginning of a whole other fight --- ! And not being able to deduct mortgage interest? All heck broke lose.

It seemed like once exceptions began to creep in, for this group, then that group, the whole thing folded... like BRAC, once politics crept into the process.

The special bills were the ones that killed me, though. The Gallo family (of California jug-wine fame) had a great return on their investment. They spread about $2 million around DC and got a bill re: Estate Taxes passed just for them, shepherded through the Senate by Bob Dole (no less) at the height of his power. They paid out $2 million and got $102 million written off. I think it took less than a month, too.

I thought that was quite a trick!

That was one of the things that got me hooked on watching C-SPAN... I couldn't BELIEVE what I was seeing half the time.

ELKO, Nev. - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is standing by foreign policy comments that sparked anger in Pakistan and attacks from his opponents.

Obama told a group in Nevada he didn't think he'd made a mistake in suggesting he would use military force in Pakistan if necessary to hunt down terrorists.

He also sought to clarify his assertion that the use of nuclear weapons in such an attack would be "off the table." Obama says "every military expert" knows it would be better to use conventional weapons in that situation.

Pakistan is considered a U.S. ally in the war on terrorism.

The government of Pakistan last week branded Obama's comment "irresponsible" and protesters in Islamabad burned an American flag.”
