Gem - I am sure you are aware that we have had a very dry winter here in Northern CA. Just be aware during your planning that water may be quite scarce and hard to come by once you leave the Little Yosemite area. Get as much water as you can from LYV. Last time it was a dry year, we had to pump from a green puddle AND Sunrise was dry. Get as much water as you can from LYV. The only water to be had there was from a pipe. Once past Cathedral Lakes you should be fine. So basically your first night and second day might be thirsty.

Thanks SandyAnn... I guess that would mean ya needy to take a filter? I was planning on taking drops this time to save weight..
Gem

Hmmm...I think you could get away with drops if you don't want to carry the filter. So far all of the trips I have done this year have been without the filter.

I personally would carry one just because I don't like the floaties. Many people just don't bother filtering with anything.

I guess it all depends on where you are spending your first night? If you plan on going all the way from the Valley to Sunrise then I think you are fine with drops. The other option is to carry the filter and lose it at Toulomne if you find you don't need it.

I am looking at the little JMT atlas... But wow, $37 for it? It's very small and compact. Wondering if its worth it, or if I should stick with the regular 13 page map set?

sandyann - I also don't care for the floaties and JERMM clued me in on a great way to handle them - Walgreens and other drug stores sell cheap nylon socks for women in little plastic eggs - 2/1$ or 0.65$ for 1 pair - rinse the socks out and stick a sock into the water bottle pulling the elastic part of the sock over the mouth of the bottle then fill the bottle - the sock catches all the floaties and the water flow into the sock is better than any other similar technique. See http://jjmatheshikes.blogspot.com/2010/11/h2o-treatment.html for some pics and discussion

I've used my bandana once upon a time - the sock technique is an order of magnitude better for getting good flow

yeah HOI...I've also heard that you can use a coffee filter but I think it can only be used once. I did a trip a couple weeks ago and managed to get fresh springwater below Half Dome right after the turn off the JMT. No floaties cuz it was straight out of the ground. Then got some out of a small creek close to the turn off for Cloud's Rest and lot's of stuff went into my bottle and tummy.

Just read over the old thread. What happened to Sacco? I miss him!!!

Donna the Bluefin bartender asking me all kinds of question why I sit here wearing hiking pants, Looking at Maps and reading guide books... how can I explain that it's actually fun walking for 21 days, smelling funny and sleeping in a tent?

Don't even try. It is incomprehensible to anyone who has never done it and even to some who have. Sometimes I even ask myself WTF I am doing?

the thing that tripped me into using the sock was in the Smokys I dipped some water from a stream, looked at it and saw things swimming in the water - floaties - sort of OK - swimmies - no way

my solar charger came today. Not bad at all. a little heavy though, but the battery power is 4000mAh. That's pretty good for $25 device.
Needed a new headlamp [mine broke]

This is what I ordered with my dividends:

I know, right? We always do. Crazy beeeeeshhessss.

Remember that time we did the Pine Barrens (ugh, so flat) in the middle of a 110 heat wave and we got lost with no water sources? Fun times.

Then we went in the river to cool off when we made it to camp and there were eels everywhere? HAHAHA

Or how about the time up in RI? Who ya gonna call???

Now I remember what Facebook is good for. (other then talking &@&!) I can write and edit trip reports... I guess Facebook will be my trail journal. I can copy later over to trail journal.

Was hoping my son would be able to hike the JMT with me this time, he really wanted to... Don't look like it will happen though :( I blame it on the broken mirror.
