U.S. PARK POLICE RULES THAT SUBSTANCE LEFT AT THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL IS VANDALISM
National Park Service Continues Cleanup Efforts

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Park Police ruled today that the oily substance spread on sections of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and on the paving stones was an act of vandalism. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Lachance stressed that the investigation is ongoing and would not offer further comment.

The National Park Service continues working to identify and remove the substance. Because it is not yet known what was spread on The Wall and paving stones, the National Park Service's (NPS) Preservation and Maintenance Staff is working with the most gentle of techniques to ensure the substance's removal, but also to ensure that the substance is not pushed into the granite stonework or grouting.

“We believe the American public would want the NPS to do the preservation and restoration work properly and not to move in a hasty manner,” said NPS spokesman Bill Line. “If the preservation work takes another week or two or more, it is more important to perform the removal properly than to move quickly and thus risk long-term damage.”

NPS urges concerned citizens to be patient with the cleanup and investigative work.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is continuing to monitor the situation and has offered its help to both NPS and the Park Police. It has contacted the stoneworkers who work on The Wall to get their expert advice.

“We deplore this act of vandalism on one of America’s sacred places,” said Memorial Fund Founder and President Jan C. Scruggs.

It's been interesting to follow the non-story about the discount MoveOn got for the now legendary Betreaus ad.  Anytime you'd like to do the same, all you have to do is set up a Google News Alert and you get an email when stories matching your search terms appear.

This is how it went:

Some rightwing blogs picked up the story that MoveOn had gotten a discount. The NY Post printed a one-sided smear story. American Spectator repeated it. Fox reprinted in on their website. The Times debunked it. Advertising Age completely debunked it. [MoveOn got the standard discount ANY advocacy group, including VoteForRudy, would get for that category of ad]

O'Reilly spread the false story on Fox, and so did Brit Hume.

After all the noise Giuliani made about the alleged preferential discount.... There Is Not A Single Mention Of It On His Website.

Wonder why.... LOL

USA Today reports he got the same standard discount he so stridently demanded.

If you'd like an 'inside baseball' view of how this sort of thing is played within present-day presidential campaigns, read this piece by former Giuliani campaign advisor Patrick Ruffini.

The whole MoveOn rhubarb was another fundraising opportunity --- for both sides. And when you're "cashing in on the outrage," timing is everything.

But for God's sake --- don't depend on blogs (or outlets who repeat the rumors and outright lies from blogs). Your own credibility will suffer.

IT IS SOOOOOO COOL that the libbies are screaming DRAFT DODGER now....lets turn back the clock....it is 1992. On the left we have a confirmed draft Dodger (in every sense of the word) this is a man who publically protested the UNITED STATES in the ENEMY territory (that being the Evil empire of the Soviet Union).

On the Right we have

In 1942 , Dole joined the United States Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II. He became a second lieutenant in the Army's 10th Mountain Division.

In April of 1945 , while engaged in combat in the hills of northern Italy, he was hit by German machine gun fire in his upper right back. His right arm was also badly injured. He had to wait nine hours on the battlefield before being taken to the Fifteenth Evacuation Hospital. He began his recovery at a U.S. Army hospital in Michigan, where he met future fellow politician Daniel Inouye. His right arm was paralyzed; Dole often carries a pen in his right hand to signal that he cannot shake hands with that arm.

Dole was twice decorated for heroism, receiving two Purple Hearts for his injuries, and the Bronze Star Medal with combat "V" for valor for his attempt to assist a downed radio man.

At the time the LIBBIES said that didn't matter.....I feel a song coming on Sarge.

Police Say Vietnam Memorial Vandalized

WASHINGTON (AP) — An oily substance found splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial this month was the result of vandalism, U.S. Park Police determined.

Sgt. Robert Lachance, a Park Police spokesman, said Monday that a detective made the conclusion, but he declined to provide further details because of the investigation is ongoing.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which built the structure, has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

The oily substance on the black granite wall — which bears the names of more than 58,000 men and women killed or missing in the Vietnam War — was first reported Sept. 7. National Park Service officials said they did not know what the substance was, and at first said it was unclear whether it was the result of vandalism or some kind of accident.

On Monday, dark blotches remained along a stone curb at the base of the wall for much of its length. At least 14 of its 140 inscribed panels appeared to be stained.

Park Service spokesman Bill Line said maintenance and preservation crews were working to remove the stains and marks but were proceeding cautiously to avoid further damage. He said officials are confident they can remove all the stains, but it could take a week or more.

"It's deplorable that someone would vandalize what's really a national shrine," said Jan C. Scruggs, founder and president of the Memorial Fund. "It's an outrage. It's sad."

I see more of a cult of not George Dubya Bush, based primarily on hearsay, urban legand, and conspiracy theories coming from bloggers and enemy supported political campaigns.

His supporters basically come down to a group of people who support taking the fight to the terrorists, hardly a cultish attribute, even if you disagree.
