I think XL either should start driving more, or be a man and join the effort in Iraq! He talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk. coward.

Give XL a break, Just because he has unrealistic expectations and a poor leader doesnt make him a bad guy. He is just a victim of a well run propaganda campaign. Deprogramming may help.

Strange but Iraq kinda reminds me of the Drazi conflict. Green. Purple.

Thank you Birch...(LOL)....

I Keep remembering when I hear the libbies telling me not to comment on former military service people demeaning the effort that until his actions regarding West Point, General Benedict Arnold was one of General Washington's best officers....

Hey its okay if you are not dedicated to the military finishing their mission. I know it is hard to be dedicated to something when you really don't understand dedication (LOL).

OH um if you want to throw dispersions remember the first 300 public servants to pay the price for the libbie failure to respond were FDNY firefighters.

XL, when have I ever stated that we should get out of Iraq?

I have supported the war from day one and still believe we are there for the right reasons and that we must stay. If you would bother to do more than drag your eyes across the words on page you might actually comprehend this. Read some archived threads.

I am curious how do you define libby, define your terms.

Oh and which cities have had the 45 murders. You said that this happens so back it up with some facts. I live 4 miles from detroit and it has the the high honor of murder capitol. Its never had that many killings in a day including the the riots in the 60s.

I would never throw dispersions against firefighters (not sure why you even brought this up). I do retain the right to throw dispersions at you because you are a rambling incoherent idiot.

Wow there are still people who actually still support the Iraqi war? I cant conceive of a single good reason why we are there. Plese feel free to explain this to me but dont bother with all the rhetoric. We helped Hussein into power. We supplied him with WMD's. We have never acted over purely altruistic causes. So whats the deal? How do we benefit out of pouring trillions of dollars into this war?

Dubya's reference to Iraq withdrawal as "defeat" is a cheap attempt to appeal to our aversion to losing a competition.

"OH um if you want to throw dispersions remember the first 300 public servants to pay the price for the libbie failure to respond were FDNY firefighters."

XLOL

Perhaps you meant, "aspersions", Bright Boy.

Now Dubya is a libbie???
It was the Dumbya Regime that ignored the warnings in 2001.
Maybe it was his "bring-it-on" attitude that led to the disaster in NYC.

All the Nam talk brings back memories

Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag (Next Stop Iraq Land)

Country Joe & the Fish
Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Iraqi Land so
put down your books and pick up a gun we're
gonna have a whole lotta fun

(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Iraqi Land
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die

Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get those Al Qaeda
cos the only good Iraqi is the one that's dead and you know that peace can only be won when we've blown 'em all to kingdom come

Come on wall street don't be slow
why man this war is a go-go
there's plenty good money to be made by
supplying the army with the tools of its trade let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb, they drop it on Iraqi Land

Come on mothers throughout the land
pack your boys off to Iraqi Land
come on father's don't hesitate
send your sons off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your boy come home in a box

Vietnam was also safer then american streets but for some strange reason people think that getting shot or blown to bits in a foreign war is somehow different then getting hit by a car while crossing the street. Is it because one is seen as a murder and the other is viewed as an accident?

Despite the revolving litany of reasons that were put forth (which blew away like tissue paper), it became obvious what the administration's ultimate fall-back position was going to be when they announced the 'title' of their operation.... "Iraqi Freedom".

It's like they knew the other rationalizations were flimsy.

Lumberjack,I will take your bait. we have a responsibility to leave Iraq better than we found it period. We invaded and made a mess of the place we must make that right pure and simple. We owe that much to the servicemen and women who have died and the Iraqi people. Simply because its the right thing to do.

And for what its worth I am not going to get into a protracted disscussion about it for 2 reasons.
1) both of minds our made up and I dont expect either to change.
2) I will be away from my computer (I dont use em at work) till thursday evening.

Personally, I don't think it made sense to go into Iraq. Once we were in, I don't think it made sense to undertake a wholesale nation building exercise - disbanding institutions including the military and rebuilding them from scratch, dramatically re-organizing the economy, etc...

Now, I don't believe it makes sense to just take off. That said, I come close to agreeing with Birch. I'm not sure we can leave Iraq better than we found it. I don't think we can leave with our geo-political position better than it was when we went in. I do think it both right and in our best interest to do better than simply bailing.

My frustration is that I have no faith in Bush's team not to make things even worse. I don't see setting a public deadline for withdrawal helping either. Lastly the tug of war between Bush and the Democrats seems more like a poker game over who will get the blame for the fallout (right now, I think Bush is playing his hand better than the Dems are.) I may regret this view later. I'm much afraid that things will get worse and worse, and it will turn out with hindsight that we were better off just leaving ASAP. I believe there are better options and hope we find and pursue one.

The most astute analysis I've seen about why we went in on TT is Mutt's. I disagree that it justifies the decision, morally or pragmatically, but I think it comes closest to explaining the reasoning of the people behind the policy.

Other factors: the long standing Bush alliance with forces in the House of Saud, oil wealth, domestic political power and the stature that comes with being a war President.

I think WMD's were part of it, and at least some in the Bush camp believed the hype. This is the problem with demanding your intelligence people prove something - rather than pushing for more objectivity. Otherwise, they would have been better prepared to provide convincing phony evidence (which I thought they would have done by now, but as they get desperate they may yet do).

I am not sure that we have a choice to leave.

It is clear right now that we are NOT going to leave while Bush is in office.

Even if the new president decides to leave on the day that he or she takes office, it will take years to pull the troops out. And if we have to fight our way out, it might take longer.

But let's say that Turkey invades from the north. Do we stay longer to placate them?

Or let's say that Iran invades. Do we stay then?

I can think of many reasons why a pullout might be cut short by facts on the ground.

Personally, I think that Bush has used up his chances to impact the situation. But, the new president - no matter the party - will have a window of opportunity to change the game a bit.

I think that it would be foolish to leave until that effort has been made.

The candidates might have positions in favor of pullout. But what if the new president doesn't really have that as a realistic choice?

Gas just went up to $2.60 because Iran kidnapped 15 soldiers. What would it rise to if America started to pull the troops out? What if that happens when we are in the middle of a recession?

What happens if the surrounding countries invade?

There is a certain stability to the current situation. It is NOT the worst case scenario.

Do we stay in southern Iraq to create a buffer for our Gulf client-states and withdraw from the rest of the country?
reformed lurker
10:34:39 AM
4/04/07

BTW, everyone should think back to Richard Nixon. He had a "secret plan" to end the war and then increased the bombing when he was elected.

I think that at least some of the candidates on both sides are running on positions that they don't believe and won't follow through on if elected.

And, honestly, I don't blame them.
reformed lurker
10:38:43 AM

BTW, if a candidate truly wanted to pull out, the correct political position to take is to be hawkish. It would give America the most favorable terms of withdrawal.
