“A message board I read (backpackinglight) consistently makes ppl stay "on topic" and otherwise rigidly enforces their terms of participation. They set up a second board for chatter/flaming (campfire or kampfire).
That made the first board much more valuable IMO.
I do realize that I can easily avoid reading the flame threads, but first, there's that tendency to "gawk at the car crash" thing (completely my own fault), and second, the crap often spills over to the other threads.
I've been here forever and love it, but it's a pretty nasty place sometimes.
