“The summer heat is going strong of the Gulf Coast. 90s everyday, lows in the high 70s.

I need some relief from the heat.

Where is it nice and cool in the mornings?”

“Here in New Hampster, it was 56 degrees around 7 AM today. I opened all the windows and used the fan to blow in some cool air from the screen porch. It got up to around 78 outside today. I just checked and the inside temp was 69 degrees and the outside temp was 73 degrees. It's almost time to open up all the windows again.

I spent the past two days in a rescue harness and helment doing confined space rescue. The last scenario was at 3 PM today, 97 degrees in the shade and around 120 inside the confined space, which was a Black painted steel tank. Inside the vessel with me was another rescuer, the live victim, a backboard, and sked. We assumed a contaminated atmosphere so we were wearing SCBA(Self Contained Breathing Aparatus). The only thing that could have made it hotter would have to gone in wearing full bunker gear. It took us 28 minutes to get the victim and rescue team out of the hole. Within the golden hour but we were exausted when we got out of that hole. After pulling the sweaty grimy gear off, the 97 degree air temp outside the hole felt like airconditioning. I'm not a professional firefighter or rescue technician, I am just a volunteer on my chemcial plants Emergency Brigade. Did I have fun the last two days? Hell yes I got paid two days to play First Responder and recieved more valuable training from our best. The LSU Fire and Emergency Training Center. My firemans hat however goes off to those guys that have to do the real thing everyday. If you see a bunch of firemen or other first responders on the job and want to help them out. Get a big cooler of bottled water, gatoraid, etc. and and get it to them quicky they may not have time to get it themselves.”

“It will top 110 with the heat index today...Bateaux try it for 2 hours in the heavy firefighting gear...if you last 30 mins you are tough. Right now it is 96and 64% humidity....feels like crap out there.

As for humidity and heat...once you hit 70% it is miserable...regardless of where you are. And for temps..above 90 is HOT.

I'm going someplace a little cooler next week. I'm getting on a ship in Galveston and heading to Jamaica and Grand Cayman for a week. Highs in the 80's on Grand Cayman and low 90's on Jamaica. I'm going to zipline 250 feet above the ground and trees in Jamaica at 35 miles per hour. That should dry the sweat off ya!

“MBJ: You mentioned the zip line. Be sure you buy Appleton rum to bring back. It's about $35 per bottle in the states and about $12 there. Also, Blue Mtn coffee is about $40/# here and maybe $10/# there.

Grand Cayman: I don't dive but hear it's great there.

Cozumel: We did the snorkel shore excursion trip and loved it. They take you out on a boat for maybe 30 minutes to the dive location. The water is just deep enough that it's difficult to touch bottom. They're doing that to protect the coral. It's beautiful. As soon as the swim is over it's open bar for the rest of the trip. After that they take you to a private beach for maybe an hour. I enjoyed that part as well. THe little town isn't much but we did enjoy some authentic local food. Other groups with us went to Carlos and Charlies and probably had too much fun. I know one couple that did the horses and Maya ruins tour and enjoyed it and another did the dolphins and loved that as well. We went as part of a group of about 40 for a conf.

“Hey Dayhiker, I forgot to mention that Montego Bay also has the Bobsled Cafe on Gloucester Ave. They have the origional bobsled used by the first Jamaican Olympic Bobsled Team from 1988 in the cafe. It may seem strange but, I gotta check that out while I'm there!”
