Gonna take the kiddies for a two nighter in Freedom IN. this weekend. Woo hoo!!! 8) Not really backpacking, but not really car camping either, maybe tractor/horse camping? We will be on private property, which is nice because we can do anything we like. We'll see how my oldest holds up. She is 8 and tends to whine after a while.

Who can not like Indiana?

This great State gave us one of the best movies every made, Breaking Away.

Saw it on cable again the other night. Great movie!

Middle America at it's finest!

it's not bad...i live a quarter mile from highway 37, the road where most of the road bike scenes were shot...the whole blomington area is beautiful and has some backpacking opportunities too, in fact this weekends deam trip is only 20 miles from there

I thought I'd put some "feelers" out to see if anyone would be interested in a 1-2 nighter sometime in Sept. or Oct.?

I'm thinking part of the Tecumseh in Morgan Monroe/Yellow Wood state forests, the old stand by Deam Wilderness, or maybe the Two Lakes Loop trail in the southern part of the HNF...I know the later might be a little too far south for some of you northerners

I'm really jonsing to get out. Baby jail's driving me crazy! ;) What's everybody think?

“I could be game”

Should we bring our guns for hunting WK? . . . :)

I was just down on the Tecumseh this weekend. Water is very limited, with even some of the more reliable creeks reduced to a trickle. I would expect the same in the Deam.

I could be up for a weekend in Oct. . . . Sept. is pretty much gone for me with my trip to hike the Wonderland Trail.

this will be my first trip since Feb so i'm thinking low mileage so it'd probably be feasible to pack water in...plus if i pick the tecumpseh it'd be around bear lake

Camping is not permitted at Bear Lake, but the Fox Den Shelter is 3.7 miles south of there. There is a creek .25 miles north of the shelter (it was totally dry) and another 1.0 mile south of the shelter (outside of Bear Lake, the best water supply I found last weekend).

what about the knobstone?...anybody have a good source for a map that shows camp sites?...i've never seen one that show them

Hey Thrifty! I could be up for something like that, depending on the dates. I am especially wanting to hit the trail now, since I had to back out on a recent porkies trip. I could handle something close to home.

Well you see, it's like this...

I had this idea to sell my own brand of hot sauce, but when I couldn't come up woth a decent recipe it occured to me that Taco Bell was just giving the stuff away! So I figured I could just stock up then bottle it and Viola! Mega profits! Well when the car broke down beyond repair, I didn't worry. Ol' Gertie was safely parked right there on the side walk at the house. The problem was when the town figured out that it was broke they told me I had to move it or it would be towed. So in an act of guilt and shame I returned the sauce, and had the car hauled to the scrap yard. I still think it was a good idea if only it were easier to get parts for a 1978 Newport. Damn... foiled again.
LOL!

The Two Lakes trail, or even the Low Gap trail(the trip that bombed on me a couple months back) would be good. They are all in the same general area. I don't care what really. I just want to get in the woods! I do need to do shorter trips, or somewhere potable water is avail, as I don't have a filter, and won't be buying one for a while. I'm not afraid of carrying plenty of water though.

Hey guys lets put this together! The Two Lakes trail looks like fun. Anyone done this before? Randall, Thrifty, Indy John? I'm thinking late Sept/early Oct. What do you say?

I missed this thread when I posted my trip. Hope I didn't step on anyones toes trying to get a trip going!

Shirley Creek and German Ridge are both nice trails. They have a lot of horse traffic some times of the year but the rutting up of the trail is not that bad. I even mountain bike sections of both. Shirley Creek is good for an overnighter but I've hiked it all in a day before.

German ridge I think you can get a 24-mile loop out of. It has lots of connecting loops so you can get lots of different mileage. Keep me posted on trips I'm ready to hike again!

i haven't been on here in a few days and missed all the the indiana excitement!! LOL i would like to try to go on/arrange a trip in sept./oct. but due to the new baby and spousal concerns will probably only be able to do one and due to not having much vacation left i will probably be limited to weekends...meangreen, are weekends totally out of the question for you?

if i don't get to make IJ's knobstone trip i'll try to put something else together...i have hiked the two lakes, it's pretty nice and it's been a while...it's a perfect weekender

Hey Thrifty! Sorry I took so long, but I haven't been on-line for a couple days. The Two Lakes trail sounds better all the time. Fall may be a nice time for it too. I don't really have the gear for anything colder than mid-low 40's at night though. Is hunting allowed on that area? I don't want to have to mess with anyone out for early bow season.

Ya, weekends are almost completely out. Sucks, I know. I am looking into a vacation day or two, but don't really know yet.

BTW I'm probably gonna be bummin around Shades SP sometime early next week. If anyone would like to join me for an all-day day trip they are more than welcome.
