I am moving soon and am in the process of hooking up new service to my new place. Can any of you tell me about Vonage? I understand the concept of using your cable. Is it a good thing? Is it going to be reliable? What are the pro's and con's to having a regular phone line. I need a voice line and a dedicated fax line.

I've used Vonage for about a year now and I'm very pleased with it. I've found it quite reliable. I can give you a referral if you want.

Thanks, Leo. I would appreciate that.

If my cable goes out (Comcast will be my cable and ISP), does that mean I will lose phone service as well?

We have Vonage & Comcast, Ruby. I love it. Less than $30 a month gives us unlimited calls to the US.

Pros - It was surprisingly easy to set up and the only troubleshooting I've had to do is just resetting the modem a couple of times. Sound quality is usually good, though it can drop just a bit during heavy internet traffic. You can have one person on the internet and the other on the phone.

Cons - you don't have true 911 service, you have to register the phone number with your location. I don't know if that delays response time, as thankfully we've never needed it. Also, yes, if the internet is down, you lose phone service.

I don't know if we've ever had cable service and not internet (or vice versa) so I can't say when just the cable quits if Vonage works.

You can have it automatically forward calls to your cell phone if your internet is down. I recommend having your cable modem and router connected to an uninterruptible power supply so your phone server still works if the power is out. Sure it's got some cons, but the price tag is a big winner for me. I go with the 500 minute plan and I've never needed that much any given month. Canada is free and international rates are very reasonable too.

my friends have vonage. it sounds like thay are talking into a mason jar. scratchy. no power = no phone. no 911 service. and it's not even that much less expensive than local phone service, esp if you shop around. give it another 4-5 years.

Every time I read the title of this thread, I think it says "Tell me about Bondage". Is it just me?
