“I'm going somewhere the weekend of 21-23 April and my teenage daughters favorite trip is Mt Rogers/Grayson Highlands area. This part of her Spring Break and we were wondering iffin anyone would be interested in joining us or have any other suggestions for this area.”
“Wilburn Ridge is right off of Mt Rogers and the views are spectacular. You may want to consult him who calls himself Refrigerator, being that it's literally in his backyard...”
“Phantom....dude....my friend from up north...we camped at Wilburn Ridge...together....remember?”
“Camp away from Rhododendron Gap and Wise shelter. Check out Pine Mt, Briar Ridge, or AT toward 3 Peaks”
“Well, if I tell my son (15)that there is a hike with two teenage chicks involved, I am sure he will want to go there for spring break.
So, count me in as a maybe until I talk to him.”
“Chili, you must be seeing double, Spam has but one daughter.
I like this trip.......yo, Fridge!!!”
“I think Teasa and I will be available for this unless her new job presents a problem”
“Cool guys and gals I'll plan this one out and have it posted by the weekend.”
“Its gonna take that long??
“Well my MD bro for you I might be able to speed it up a little bit!”
“Lets do it Spam. Have you been across Iron Mountain too the water falls? Or to the big look out across the valley looking at Iron Mountain from Whitetop Mt? Good campsites all the way around.
Marko??? you up too this one dude????
Maybe I will show you my FYAO sticker man!!!!”
Maybe I can hitch a ride with the baume66 express.
Man, I really missed seeing you and the rest of the FYAO people!!
Oh yeah, don't strain yerself, Spamalam!”
“I need to get back on the trail easy, so this is prolly the perfect hike for me. April is good for me too. NO plans.”
“hey spam I'd like to go ..”
“Everyone is invited JB!”
“Refrigerator I've lost about half of my map because one of my four legged critters got hold of it when I was unpacking from my last trip up there so I've located Whitetop but not Iron Mt.Which direction is Iron Mt in reference to Whitetop?”
“I'm followin' you guys..............”
“SPAM my man Iron Mountain parallels Mt.Rogers and White top to the west. When at wilburn ridge near Rodo Gap looking west you are looking at Iron Mountain. The other side of rt 603 from Troutdale. Iron runs kinda north south. There is a new shelter along the At near Fox creek area on Iron Mountain. Not much traffic all through Iron Mountain this time of the year through May.”
“i have to check my work schedule”
“I might up for some hiking down there on the mountain they call Rogers that lies with in the state they call ole Virginia.”
“We need a good route Refrigerator so where exactly are you proposing we enter and meet on Friday and where would Saturdays camp be.I really can't plan without a map so somebody HELP ME PLEASE!”
“Come on, Fridge!!”
“We can meet at the Fox Creek AT trail head along rt 603 and hike up to pine Mt and camp at an area looking at Mt Rogers , Wilburn Ridge elevation approx 4,500 with a spring near by and plenty of fire wood. Or meet at FOX creek and all who have trucks can drive to scales where it's an easy 2 miles to the same camp site as mentioned above.
As many already know fire wood is available but scarce up alnog the AT at the higher peaks but the Views are worth it.
This campsite area is also a good base camp giving you 6 to 7 options of day hikes some as long as 14 miles and most 7 to 10 miles with the least being 2 to 5 miles. This time of year we should hear Cayotes and see ponies of course. I need to check with Mt Rogers Headquaters on there fire burning dates. I have been on the Mountain when they have controlled burns and pending which way the wind blows well you get the picture.
Spam Your trip. Meet at Fox creek or scales or at the campground just up from Fox creek or Grayson Highlands State Park.
The base camp area I was telling you about gives you access to Little Wilson creek wilderness and Lewis Fork Wilderness all with in a mile. Wilburn Ridge 2 miles and Mt Rogers 4 miles.

“Fox Creek AT trailhead is 2 miles from Troutdale VA on RT 603 on the left, an AT trail head sign is located on the left side of the road. The road to scales is a forest road 78 that goes to a camping area at Little Wilson Creek Pine Mt. This road is sort of rough but not impossible to drive. I have seen HOG ON ICE drive his little Honda there a couple times last year.
Some people have reported that Fox Creek is a bad area to park but I have never had a problem. I live here and never herd of or seen a problem there. If some would like to park at my Home just 4 miles away they are welcome.
Marko/// You really think you'll do this one???? awfull high up duhhhhh I mean elevation.”
“I think we may need to pick one of the shelters to meet at because some folks will being showing up on Friday evening after dark. Mainly me and Ellie Mae.finding a campsite may be difficult.
Refrigerator does the route you are talking about (Fox Creek) goes by the Old Orchard shelter?Remember I have no map so I'm going on memory and that might be weak!!!”
This sounds so hip man....i'm diggin it!
I might make a special guest appearance....”
“I'm watching and waiting for this trip to have a date set”
“Spam..... Old orchard shelter is located at the Fox Creek AT Trail parking lot. It is one of the original shelters left on the AT.
From there you can also do Iron Mountain or continue up to Pine Mountain to a camp site not used by many. Most use the campsites near the spring but there is another off away from traffic with plenty of wood I use several times a year.”
“Maybe I can talk Jethro into joining us.
There is a backpacker git-tar in the herd here.......yo, banjo boy!!”
“depends on the date, but I will plan on doing this one”
“Hey Fridge, Is Mae coming up? I might just think about showing up at the campsite and listen to the coyotes stalk us in the woods like last time.”
“Sticks, where the heck you been man? Come on this trip and on in to the house and park and ride up with me. How about Paul? is he comming?
Thought about the camp on Pine Mt we camped at sticks with all the fire wood available. From there we can go anywhere easily. Even skirt Mt Rogers and back track to Rodo Gap and back to Camp on the old AT section. Next day do Little Wilson Creek area and down to wise shelter or back up to scales and back to Pine Mt. any way there are soooo many possibilities from this camp site and the view of Mt Rogers and Wilburn Ridge are awesome.
This plan is not concrete it's Spam's trip and really as long as I am on the Mt I am home anyway. Good too here from you Sticks.

“Okay how about we meet Friday night the 21 of April 2006 @ the Old Orchard Shelter then on Saturday morn (early) we can move out to Refrigerators secret camping spot and we can all dayhike to the areas that we want to.head bact to cars on Sunday. Those who want a longer hike and have more time can park at Grayosn Highlands. Whatta ya think guys?”
“How about I sell my house and move in with you Fridge.
I am looking for work...again...and I would love to GTF outta NKY. I got apps all over the place.
I might try choppin' wood...nod,nod...wink,wink”
“Yo Stratdude come on down!!!!!”
“Sounds like a Plan Spam, hey that sound good.
Sticks, you definetly comming to this trip?”
“Unless I have found a job I will plan on being there.”
“Trip is posted!”
OK, I'm in...
“... but I won't get there until Saturday. I hate to ask, but Fridge, where is the secret campsite? Is it near the fenced in spring? Can you direct me from there? Should you e-mail me with details or should I just show up and start yelling for ya?”
“jmh if you get to the fenced in spring you can look back North and you should be able too see smoke or here alot of TT bull malarky and chin music.”
“I posted on the Mt Rogers trip page some mileage information for some if interested. Also more difinitive directions and mileage to the Old Orchard shelter.”
“Coolies refrigerator dude!”
“Fridge is runnin' cool??”
““Fridge is runnin' cool??”
Just don't touch his compressor!”
“Hey I've taken the route from Fox Creek last summer. We camped up somewehre past Wilburn Ridge I think (relying on memory). I've been all over a large chunk of that mountain and its awesome up there. My fiancee and I are planning a trip the weekend before....we're not sure where to start from though. We wanted to do something new. We've started from both Grayson Highlands and as I said, Fox Creek. Any suggestions? (We met Refrigerator last spring...thought I'd give a shout out.)”
“SWEETPEASTU,,,,,,,,, I would purchase a National Geo Map at the Mt Rogers Headquarters located on highway 16 just west of Sugar Grove Virginia. This map will be most valuable giving you all Trails and Parking areas within the Mt Rogers recreation Area. Also shows a couple of water falls and other interesting land features on Iron Mt from Sculls , Mt Rogers Grayson Hoghlands all tha way to Little Dry Run Wilderness near the New River. LOTS OF INFO with this map.”
“I called the Mt Rogers headquarters today and talked to one of the Rangers for information on the control Burns they do each year within the High Country here at Mt Rogers. The Control Burns will be from March 15th until April 30th but he tells me they only get approx 7 days of suitable weather to do the Burn. The burns will only be posted on the Trail heads within the area that day. Also the burns will be beginning of the week and not the weekend due to wekkend usage so our trip looks good with no problems.
I have been Backpacking near Wilburn Ridge a couple years ago actually bushwacking looking for caves and arrowheads only know to a few of us, and was witness to a burn but was lucky the wind was carrying the smoke away from me. They seem to have the burns under control. They will be Burns this year just up from Scales at an area called the Briars ridge area, and some other non disclosed areas I don't want to tell that are places only the locals know. What a tease..................... I may show on this trip to some who want the adventure.
MARKO.......You still comming up to this TRIP?????????”
“5 inches at 3,500 ft , 10 inches at 5000 ft and still snowing.”
