I think Saranac is west of Lake Placid, they get more lake effect snow than Moose pond area.

I figured a place called witherbee was pretty close, they're talking about a possible nor-easter this weekend, so mebbe that'll dump some. Do they typically track that far inland?

Not normally. If you type in North Hudson on the NOAA site it should give you about the best accuracy. The weather report would be out of Burlington, VT. Don't bother looking at the extended forecasts, as they are almost always wrong; half the time they can't even get the forecast right 2 days in advance.

Chains are a nice ace in the hole.

Three years ago I used chains on my front-drive Escape and got all the way into and out of the trail head.

Tire chains??? What type of roads are we driving in on?
Tire chains aren't available in MI (illegal) and I don't want to have to go shopping for them somewhere in NY. Are they really going to be necessary?

Oddly enough, The Weather Channel was saying that flooding might be a problem next weekend because it was supposed to rain later in the week!

The Noreaster this weekend completely missed the Adirondacks -- didn't even get a flake of snow from it.

I wouldn't go by the Saranac Lake forecast, as that and Lake Placid are both west of the Adirondack watershed divide, at higher elevation than North Hudson, and are more subject to lake effect snow. I think the forecasts for either Burlington, VT or Lake George, NY would be more accurate. Also, Ticonderoga, NY is nearby.

Mileage-wise, Lake Placid is less than half hour away, but the weather patterns can be quite different.

The southern Adirondacks got less than 1/2" from this storm with less snow the farther north you go.

I highly doubt you will need chains. It looks like the trailhead is off of a secondary road (it should be paved, plowed, and salted/sanded).
