I also got some backpacks...but they are nothing great. beginner stuff...

the waterfilter maybe interesting to some. I rather carry a little heavier and use a waterfilter that filters faster then this one.

Osprey Aether 85 - Size L

I think it is a 2007 version. I bought it in January of that year. I haven't used it much, maybe hiked 20 miles with it. It's pretty big, and I've found my smaller pack usually fits the bill.

windi-some hammock info for your son--
on the trip home we got poured on in ohio, the hennessey was quite damp and was abandoned halfway thru the night, the JRB was dry and comfy. the kid in it didn't realize how much it had rained until he put his feet on the ground.

I've never got wet in my hennessey, the tarp should cover most of it, then there are "drip" lines to prevent it from soaking under....are you sure those were down? I like my hennessy, but I know there are better hammocks, I just don't have the money to buy and test!

Can you sleep in any position other than on your back in a hammock? I like the concept but dont know if I could be scrunched in a burrito all nite.

the rain seemed to be coming in where his (my kid's) feet were. i'm going to look into a larger tarp for that one.
i don't have the money for a new hammock either, but i always seem to lose the race to sleep in it, hence the new one.

Did he not have the tarp centered over the hammock or maybe a bit too high? Mine is about an inch from the mesh on the top.

You can sleep on your side in a hammock. It's a little different but I like it. Next trip I'm taking mine, this thread has made me nostalgic about it.

nemster, I'm chlostrophobic (to a minor extent) and am a side sleeper, but sleep fine in a hammock. as Dub said, slide sleeping is doable. no problem actually

"Did he not have the tarp centered over the hammock or maybe a bit too high?"

the kids feet seem to be everywhere you least expect them...he's 14 and in the klutzy growth stage. i'm sure he had his feet pushed out the side somehow or was swinging in the rain. still, after hiding out under the 11'x10' JRB tarp, i'm ready to replace the one above the hennessy.

I'm jealous of all this hammock talk, the two places I hike are the desert( only Joshua trees 100 ft apart) and above timber line.
