phaedrus - the fact is you don't want to answer the question because it will expose your argument as being incorrect. Your response was to then making personal remarks about me. If you had a valid argument, you would have simple answered the question, but you chose not to. You (and others) would much rather call foul rather than back up your viewpoint. It's the liberal way.

You actually argued that even though Iraq attacked our military, it was not at all a threat. Wow. I'm glad I'm not you dude. I'm sure it was the fault of your childhood or society or Bush or something that you turned out that way.

Cool!

As for your wife, I don't want to meet her in person. I'm happily married. She'll need to find joy elsewhere.

I think there are three ways to view the Iraq War.

1) Ethics/Morals: Was it moral or ethical to invade? Personally, I think it was completely moral to invade. Iraq was in violation of UN resolutions. And its violation of the Gulf War cease fire brought us back into a technical state of war.

2) Cost/Benefit analysis: Were we likely to gain more than we lose in the war. Let's face it, Bush gambled the national budget, any credible threat of force elsewhere for a decade and our prestige abroad. I think the gains of a stable, Democratic Iraq were not outweighed by the possible, and now probable, cost.

3) Powell Doctrine: If the war was moral, and if it was worth doing, then it should have been done correctly. War is so important that it must be fought with EVERYTHING. This did not happen. It is not happening now. It won't happen in the future.

I think you have to have all three to justify a war.

And, while I think that it is MOST IMPORTANT to look forward to what we have to do to extricate ourselves with some grace, I also think that it is important to assign blame.

I don't think we can move forward until we remove those who are complicit in this failed policy.

phaedrus - What's ironic is that you suddenly think that 1 man using words asking for a meeting is a threat, but when a military attacks another, it is not.

Seems like the definition of threat changes whenever you want it to.

I hate to get involved with sarge's latest meltdown over here, but if anything, phaedrus insulted you. He said something about YOU beating your wife (who would be the victim). Essentially, he was talking #&%!$ about you sarge, but then again, it's that whole getting the point thing.

Also, on a context note, I believe ole Pheaddy was joking. But then again, it's the whole taking things into context thing.

Oh well, it was worth a shot anyway. :)

Jesus. If he wants to be pissed, fine, but here's the context of that comment:

Loaded Question
Alias:

* Complex Question
* Many Questions
* Plurium Interrogationum
Translation: "many questions", Latin

Form:

A question with a false, disputed, or question-begging presupposition.
Example:

Why should merely cracking down on terrorism help to stop it, when that method hasn't worked in any other country? Why are we so hated in the Muslim world? What did our government do there to bring this horror home to all those innocent Americans? And why don't we learn anything, from our free press, about the gross ineptitude of our state agencies? about what's really happening in Afghanistan? about the pertinence of Central Asia's huge reserves of oil and natural gas? about the links between the Bush and the bin Laden families?

Source: Mark Crispin Miller, "Brain Drain", Context, No. 9

Analysis
Exposition:

A "loaded question", like a loaded gun, is a dangerous thing. A loaded question is a question with a false or questionable presupposition, and it is "loaded" with that presumption. The question "Have you stopped beating your wife?" presupposes that you have beaten your wife prior to its asking, as well as that you have a wife. If you are unmarried, or have never beaten your wife, then the question is loaded.

Since this example is a yes/no question, there are only the following two direct answers:

1. "Yes, I have stopped beating my wife", which entails "I was beating my wife."
2. "No, I haven't stopped beating my wife", which entails "I am still beating my wife."

Thus, either direct answer entails that you have beaten your wife, which is, therefore, a presupposition of the question. So, a loaded question is one which you cannot answer directly without implying a falsehood or a statement that you deny. For this reason, the proper response to such a question is not to answer it directly, but to either refuse to answer or to reject the question.

Sarge's stupid yes or no bull#&%!$ was what prompted it.
