I have some questions for you all. Do Michigan Mountaineers still get together and if so how many original people still attend? Are there any people in the southwest michigan area who are interested in hiking?

ADVENTUREGIRL IS BACK!!

We're pretty much all still here, AG. Though, we don't do the monthly organized hikes anymore. Still plenty of people out hiking!

How are you? Didn't you get married?

RL, i'd love too...but I am working at ltwtbkpkr's place on friday and doing 6-8 hours training with the team on sat. Maybe next time. Its kind of a bummer, this year I havent gotten to hike but once since my focus is elsewhere, after June 7th my schedule frees up substantially so I will be out more. Hopefully we'll get together then.

I'm prolly gonna be outta town on Good Friday.
I would consider getting together for a dayhike the following weekend, tho. Was hoping to get away for an overnight w/ some friends that weekend, but might need to stick around now. Send an email my way, RL. We'll see what we can do.

Hey Tarabull-- Are you going to the Waterloo PInkney Hike? :-)

I'm thinking 'bout it! :-)

BTW-- Thinkbubelz and I went to REI for a "talk" about Isle Royale tonight....Might want to try going up there this summer... have to figure out which is more "do-able" for us-- Isle Royale or Glacier National Park... I'm not sure if I could survive a 6 hour boat ride on choppy seas....

:-)

P.S. I talked to a guy who was interested in camping Isle Royale with his sons... Mentioned TT to him and told him that there was a decent representation from Michigan-- so we might have another new person online soon! :-)

SUre you can, Pink, you just take some dramamine, and you'll be fine. :)

When I went, the Big Lake was very calm on the way there, and somewhat choppy on the way back. I took drugs for both trips, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Isle Royale
My brother-in-law often goes to Isle Royale. He takes the boat out of Grand Marais, MN. It's a four hour ride. Means you have to drive a bit further, but it might be better on your tummy.

What smiley said, dramamine. Make sure take it about 30 minutes or so before you get on the boat.

Pink, FYI, the boat ride is more like 4.5 hours or was. The new ferry, which will be in service this year, is even faster. Dramamine and some playing cards or a book. The time will fly by.

Can't Take Dramamine... It makes me completely zombied and doesn't help me at all.

Bonine, on the other hand-- I tried that and was awake, alert, happy and smiling! ;-)
(it might have been the combination of Bonine and my candied & powdered ginger... :-) At least in Michigan, I can get 2 liter bottles of Vernors! :-)

Heya pink, when are you guys thinkin about goin to Isle Royal? We've been talking about goin back up there this fall....prolly mid sept or so, maybe we can get a trip together!
Also I wouldn't worry to much about the boat ride....if my wife and dau. can handle it anybody can!

It's 4-5 hours from Copper Harbor and more like 6-7 from Houghton. I've been three times and only had a rough ride once.

UPLuver--
I don't know about that.
We went on a boat ride 2 years ago off the Maine Coast when the water was "like Glass" and I stood at the back of the boat in the middle-- miserable through the majority of the trip... :-( (Darned Dramamine!)

Same problem in the Pacific Ocean around Hawaii--

This past summer, though, I was okay when I took the Bonine & ate plenty of candied ginger and ginger candies...but again, the water was "like glass" that day...

I understand that Mid Sept. is a good time-- but not good for me-- it's the busy season and I will have only been back on the job for a week or 2... :-(

Thinkbubelz & I are still trying to figure out if we can get out to Glacier or not...

How about Late August?

Need a little help from you Mich people. My sister will be in Ishpeming Negaunee area next week for a family reunion and the Finn Fest. Near Marquette I think. She is in early pregnancy and has a small child (stroller or backpack carrier) but she'd like to do a couple short easy trails. Any suggestions.

The North County Trail goes through Marquette along the lake. Its paved in that area - an "urban" trail (if you can call it that in the U.P.!)

Others who have the trail atlas handy can help with more details or other paths.

Isn't Presque Isle Park just north of Marquette good for strollers? Also, I seem to remember a paved city shoreline trail in Marquette. And the hike up to Sugarloaf Mountain is short. But you can't take a stroller up there. It's got some nice views.

I second what was said above...

The Sugarloaf Mtn hike (off Co Rd 550) is worth it if she can get the little one up w/out the stroller. I think it's only a half mile to the summit.

Presque Isle has lots of options. The paved one is actually the road that goes through the park. Tho, they close it to traffic for certain hours every day for walkers/hikers. I believe it's 6-8PM but you'd want to check w/ The City's Parks and Rec to be sure.

And, there's a paved path that follows Lake Superior's shore from downtown to Presque Isle. It's a nice walk/bike/etc.

Beautiful area IJ; My absolute favorite part of Michigan...

Whoa---flashback! I remember hanging out at Presque Isle park when I was young and drinking.....soda, I think......waiting for whatever concert was at the arena that night. (We're talking big name concert acts too, like Huey Lewis.)
