I am missing all these trips. Shouldn't have knocked up the wife. j/k” 1:59:05 PM 12/21/04 “haha! I might go depending on what other trips I take and when and if I have any pto left.” 2:00:16 PM 12/21/04 “I put myself down as a maybe. I have never been in that area b4.” 2:19:59 PM 12/21/04 “markO, that's the trip you talked about this past weekend?” 2:39:49 PM 12/21/04 “Knob Nabbin eh!? As long as there's no knob polishin or gobblin.....it sounds pretty sweet.” 2:44:30 PM 12/21/04 “It's a cool area Ewker. Here are some pics from the last time I was there. http://community.webshots.com/album/52014687TmmRfj http://community.webshots.com/album/52083814DcXkGe” 2:46:03 PM 12/21/04 “skully, nice snake bite...ouch” 2:52:40 PM 12/21/04 “LOL! It wasn't that bad, really. It just itched a LOT for a few days.” 2:53:53 PM 12/21/04 “Yes Gemini, that's the one. The parking area is on the plateau, so there is no killer climb.......unless someone wants to punish themself on the Boar's Nest Trail.” 3:31:14 PM 12/21/04 “Tell me about this Boar's Nest Trail” 4:07:40 PM 12/21/04 Always An Adventure “A little over two years ago on a TT trip there all but three of us went DOWN the Boar's Nest Trail, losing 1200-1500 feet before getting it back(ha ha) having to climb back UP onto the plateau. Even Buddur Dog was tired. I was among the three that took to the Canyon Rim Trail getting lost and found a few times along the way. We did a schit load of boulder-hopping that day, but NO grades. Skullcap was bitten by a little snake that day!!” 8:47:39 AM 12/22/04 “I'm in.” 2:43:30 PM 1/04/05 “oh no Mr Bill” 2:51:00 PM 1/04/05 “Mr Bill?” 2:54:21 PM 1/04/05 “nevermind your to young” 3:02:00 PM 1/04/05 3:06:15 PM 1/04/05 “Dub is going? I am out! He hangs his bear bag above my #&%!$in' tent. hell no, not this time!!!” 6:07:46 PM 1/04/05 “"Knob Nabbin'..." not to be confused with Hob-noblin'... Wit de goblin De Goblin' Girl from da Mystery Wurl” 6:15:38 PM 1/04/05 “Geez man, we're gonna bust some humps!!” 8:38:10 PM 1/04/05 “I'm in.” 10:05:30 PM 1/04/05 “buddur dog at the end of the climb up boar's nest. last edited: 1/07/05 12:03:35 PM” 12:03:06 PM 1/07/05 “Gotta love the Buddur Dog !!” 12:06:11 PM 1/07/05 “that's a great picture. I want to do the climb up to Boar's Nest” 6:38:46 PM 1/07/05 “The Boar's Nest Trail leads UP to Flat Rock Plains from waaaaaaaay on down the mountain.” 1:40:39 PM 1/08/05 “that's what we should do on this trip.” 3:12:50 PM 1/08/05 “I would rather park up high than bust so much hump just to get to the plateau.” 3:33:04 PM 1/08/05 MarkO “Is this the trip you were talking about at FYAOV ?” 5:28:07 PM 3/29/05 “Yes” 1:18:44 PM 4/20/05 Who's In ??? “Two weeks !!!” 1:46:43 PM 5/14/05 “I'm in. I need to get directions to the trailhead sometime. I'll probably be coming down 79 (then turning left in WV).” 5:07:43 PM 5/14/05 “Do a mapquest.com search for Laneville, WVa. Bonner Mountain Road goes through Laneville. From I-79 South: East on Route 33 through Elkins, WVa. About 20-25 miles east of Elkins is Harman and Route 32. Go north on Route 32 3-4 miles to Bonner Mountain Road on right. Bonner Mt. Rd. is just south of the village of Dry Fork.......it ain't much more than a village.......if you get there, backtrack. While headed north turn right on Bonner Mountain Road and go about 9 miles to the end of that road and the beginning of Forest Road 19. Along the way at a dogleg turn there is a sign for Dolly Sods--->. There is a bridge over Red Creek at the 9 mile point and a ranger station on the left. At 2.6 miles up FR 19 on the right is the parking area for South Prong Trail and a sign describing the Flat Rock Plains and Roaring Plains backcountry. Near the top at about .25 mile before the So. Prong Tr. is FR 70. FR 70 roughly parallels South Prong Trail and takes us to the Pipeline. There is a campsite on The Front about three miles walk on the S P Tr. If I go out there Thursday night I will walk out FR 70 to the Pipeline, about three miles, and turn left UP the Pipeline to where it crosses The Front.......another 1 mile. From there it is a left and about .5 mile along the mostly open plateau to the same Front Site. It is sometimes a VERY WINDY place to camp. I hope to get to Haystack Knob and spend Saturday and maybe Sunday nights out there. We could bag all four in one day.....weather permitting. They are: Haystack 4,555 Green 4,680+ No Name(between Haystack and Porte Crayon) 4,659 Porte Crayon 4,770 http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=4307286.00009501&e=635490.000003625&datum=nad83 http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=4307286.00009501&e=635490.000003625&datum=nad83” 12:10:36 PM 5/15/05 “http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=4312087&e=642040&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25 This one shows the junctions with Forest Road 19 of FR 70 and South Prong Trailhead. Hmmmm, .2 miles apart.....at center top of map. last edited: 5/15/05 2:06:38 PM” 2:03:31 PM 5/15/05 “Thanks Mark! So you might be getting there on Thursday night? I am taking Fri. off so if I leave early enough I'll be getting there Fri. afternoon. WHen I was at the liquer store i saw a bottle of Knobs Creek and picked it up for the trip.(I should of looked at the price first)So that will make 5 knobs to nab that weekend.” 2:22:22 PM 5/15/05 “dlm, I hope you can stay through Sunday night. I'm leanin' toward just getting an early start on Friday and daytime-hiking on the South Prong Trail to The Front Site. Saturday's hike will be "memorable" no matter the weather. The Rim Trail involves a whole lotta rockiness. So far, my #3 son(14.5) is going. I haven't been able to get his arse on the trail for a couple of years. Excluding bagging the knobs, total trail miles is about 24.” 2:34:42 PM 5/15/05 “I was planning on staying through as long as anyone else was. I saw the pictures of the rim trail, "memorable" wasn't the first thought in my mind. Is this Front site you speak of on the map you linked to @ Jessups page ?” 6:38:44 PM 5/15/05 “dlm, yes.....there is a little red tent just south of the word "bog" and east of "Grassy Jeep Trail". That will be Friday's camp. I hope we don't get blown away by the wind!!” 8:03:43 AM 5/16/05 “I am still a maybe on this one. Would love to go, but ya know...never know if I'll be able to go or not.” 8:04:52 AM 5/16/05 “Oh yeah !?!?!?!? cool You've got to stay until Monday so's we can bag all the knobs. I'm still not sure if I want to drive out there Thursday night.......dang night-driving! last edited: 5/16/05 8:12:18 AM” 8:09:33 AM 5/16/05 “http://www.jonathanjessup.com/roaring-plains/roaring-plains-map-large.jpg http://www.jonathanjessup.com/roaring-plains/roaring-plains-map-medium.jpg” 8:18:47 AM 5/16/05 “Yeah Gemini, getchyer tail out there to WVa!!! That slack-ass EarthNsky ain't gonna make it. Memorial Day with family??? Wouldn't y'all rather sweat and cuss the rocks and lose a few pounds instead of over-eating and slackin'........and gettin' sunburnt?” 9:39:56 AM 5/16/05 “thank god I am german, and we don't have memorial day. lol and yeah...I rather get my ass kicked then to over eat dammit. I'll try my best to make it. Remember I have a lot of trips coming up, June almost one week, then again in july 10 days in CA...and more in between... I'll try my best. It's beautiful up there.” 9:42:00 AM 5/16/05 “If the weather doesn't spank us too badly we will be able to see forever from up there!!! Temperatures should be 40-70. Bugs? No bugs. I know the way.........no, really!!! I haven't been lost up there for a long time.” 9:45:52 AM 5/16/05 “How can you get lost there?.... Just keep the big a$$ valley to your left, right? (left, right) oh $hit now I'm lost” 11:54:19 AM 5/16/05 “It was one of those compound things. I couldn't find the compass, but I had the maps. Since I had been there before I thought I could orient my map with the sun.....approximately. Ha.....no sun for three days!! I tried bushwhacking through the spruce and laurel without a compass......uh oh!!!” 12:00:44 PM 5/16/05 “Thats not lost then, it's just confused for a bit. I'll bring a compass just in case.” 12:44:42 PM 5/16/05 “I have three compasses now!” 3:13:26 PM 5/16/05 “Well, I'm out from this one. Gotta wrap up the move over Memorial Day weekend, as I need to be out of my old apt by 5/31. Sorry :( Have fun, y'all!” 1:06:05 AM 5/20/05 “I ain't going anywhere this weekend. have fun you guys!” 6:07:04 AM 5/20/05 “Rats!!! I could bring 500 g's of DARK Belgian chocolate....... Too bad, my friends (mofo's). The ten-day is lookin' like light rain Thursday and Friday---70's to 40's and partly cloudy Sat and Sun---70's to 40's.” 11:36:34 AM 5/20/05 << back to Knob Nabbin' On Roaring Plains page
