I am trying to get a closer count of who is coming and who is not, and who is bringing other people. Please add your name if it is not already on the list, move it to definite if you've made up your mind, or delete it if you've dropped out on us. Also, I started a thread solely to indicate how many people you are bringing. It is not for other uses and can be accessed from the trips page for this trip.

Thanks.

Good one, MarkO. Actually, if you ever visit my hamlet, Rockburn, you will see that it's as close to the Shire as could be imagined for a real place.

I have to learn about digital photography.

Nah, you'd all want to move here.

Hey Gremlin!!

While so many people go south and live with hordes of other like-minded old farts, I would like to move north.

Maybe Canada would have me..........maybe not.

COOK-OFF - rules ?? guidelines ??
Just wondering..... if there is going to be some kind of guidelines for this shindig ?? Or, if you can wheelbarrow it in, you qualify??
I'm soooooooooooo looking forward to this little get together!!!

John,

Last year it went a little like this. The cook off was Saturday night. The only major rule I remember was that a sample of your dish had to be on the judges table at a certain time (I think it was 6 PM)

Other than that, you can cook anything you want.

Tree or Geo can correct me if I am wrong.

Don't bother really trying to cook something because I am going to win!

WK has it right. This is the third year and part of the fun of this particular tradition is that the rules are, more or less, lax. Use your creativity, use your inventiveness, just adhere to the time line, so there can be an organized competition and the food can be tested hot and in the form it's intended to be in.
Treebeard

And WK is not going to win by cooking Chicago style brontosaurus meat!
Treebeard

Chicago style brontosaurus does not stand up to East River sauce??

Well, I tested the dish I will be preparing this past Sunday. Had a bunch of friends over for a little BBQ.

Everyone walked away with a full and satified stomach! I am going to change the way I prepare it to make it easier to cook plus I'll be cooking over the charcol instead of gas.

Get ready all you freaks! I am bringing my meat with me!

The plan is to get all these freaks into the valley at the same time, seal it off from civilization, and see what happens. An experiment in science, ya might say. Or, they could just arrest the lone surivivor and charge him or her with mass murder.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again and meeting new people.
I have never been to WV except for a drive by.
did we talk about maybe kayaking in this area?

do we have an idea for what trails are there?
any maps?

I want people to know that all kidding aside, that this is a trip for all. not just you drinkers. (you know who you are)

there was talk about making more rules for the cook off this year.
catagories

any thoughts?

we could do it this way.

1. main dish
2. side dish
3. desert
4. best drink alch and or non alch

but no matter what, the time will be set and kept to. a few slackers last two years have messed up other peoples meals.

I will be getting info together shortly on sights to see, trails, etc.

I'm thinking water flow in the South Branch will be pretty low, unless we get a lot of rain preceding the trip.
Geobeet

so kayaking is out?

or is there another area we can go if we want to.
i would like to take one day and do that.
if noone else wants to, i can go it alone.

Mapes, all the streams in the area are going to under low summer flow, unless there is a period of pretty steady rain just prior to the trip. Let's check the WV weather in the week prior to the trip and see how it plays out, but I am doubtful. July is generally not a wet month. The flow was pretty low in early May, when it normally is a bit higher. No sense dragging a kayak along and spending time staring at a lot of rocks.

That is a drier part of West Virginia than the mountains just to the west.

There is rock-climbing about thirty miles from there for any of you rock nuts.
