Sorry, Pathie! Didn't catch this the other day.

"Out Through The In DOor" from Vanilla Fudge. I like the album and the copy I just got was sent to me by Vinny Martell , guitarist. I interviewed him and Mark Stein recently.

This Saturday, Nora and I are going to see them in concert at BB King's in Times Square. They invited us to come hang with them backstage, too. Looking forward to meeting Mark, Vuinny and Carmine Appice (amazing drummer).

Had a good February with interviews. I met Johnny Winter on Thursday and I will be airing my talk with Al Kooper in the next few weeks. Looking to get Gregg Rolie (Santana/Journey) next.

all i can say is wow!

wasn't Carmine Appice in one of the bigtime 80's 'hair bands'?

Very cool!

I think Vanilla Fudge was the first album I bought (from the cut out bin). I must have heard their version of "You keep me hanging on" hundreds of times in my teens.

In the interview, Vinny said that they were hanging out in Manhattan in the infancy of the group and Mark and one of the others were talking about that song and said that they felt it was too happy and bouncy the way the Diana Ross and the Supremes did it (considering it is not a real happy song, lyrically). So, in line with what some other Long Island bands were starting to do (e.g. - The Rascals and The Vagrants - Leslie West's precursor to Mountain), they decided to slow it up and give it guts with a touch of symphonic rock and psychedelia. So, that's how it came about...

So, as for the first album, I've already asked these guys if they wouldn't mind signing my old original vinyl copy of VF. They said 'no problem.'

I don't know about that. But, following the break-up of Vanilla Fudge, Carmine formed Cactus with Tim Bogert of the band, along with two other musicians (can't recall their names). From there, they split off from the other two and took in Jeff Beck and changed the name (Beck, Bogert and Appice).

A couple of other interesting tidbits about the band:

The Fudge got pretty big in the late 60's and did two tours starting in 1968 where Led Zepellin was their opening act on both tours.

At a jam session following a night at a 60's night spot called Steve Paul's 'The Scene', Jimi Hendrix told Vinny Martell to call him if VF ever breaks up and he will have a job playing with him.

I may have confused the name, but I'd swear that i recall the name "Appice" being associated with one of the hair bands from the 80's - maybe a family member.

You make some really cool connections Treebeard!

ok, i figured out my memory - not a hair band. :)

According to wikipedia; Carmine Appice toured with Ozzy on Bark at the Moon in 1983.

I jumped on the music purchasing bandwagon a little late. My first album was Cheap Trick at Budokan. I followed that up with Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Then New Riders of the Purple Sage' Panama Red. I was all over the board.

Roam, I now have a little extra incentive to throw in for the musicians I am pursuing. For the past year or so, I have been working, in addition to the internet radio show, at a 50,000 watt New York City radio station that has good listenership and beams off the Empire State Building. So, it helps when trying to reel them in for interviews to offer an outlet that helps them self-promote.

I had a guy work for me whose son was the light man for Bon Jovi. His son died of brain cancer in the middle of their time on top.

It was weird to have an 80 year old man come to work wearing tour t-shirts from all the top groups of that era. I would tell him he could make thousands of dollars selling them...his reply was he didn't need the money.

No he truly didn't need the money. Between his retirement from Keebler, insurance from both his wife and son dying...he was a millionaire. Paid cash for 500 acres of property in Adams County Ohio. He had a 16 year old grandson that got it all when he died...that was the only family he had.

He just worked to keep busy.

Bruce Cockburn
On today's show, I will start off with music intermixed with my interview with Canadian artist Bruce Cockburn. He is one of my favorite interviewees of my career. At 2:00 PM, the Underground Railroad sets out with this special broadcast. www.hgrnj.org. The piece will also be aired tonight at 99.5 FM WBAI in New york City and streamed at www.wbai.org from 1 - 3 AM. It will also be available in the WBAI archives for several weeks. Just go to the home page and look to the right for archived shows and scroll down to Morning Dew on May 1, 2011 at 1 AM

Greetings Folks!
Been awhile since I have brought up this thread. So, I thought I would check in and tell you how the ole music pursuits are going.

Been connecting with some good heavy hitters from the classic rock world of late. I am now producing a freeform rock program on WBAI in New York City as well as my Underground Railroad show at www.hgrnj.org.

I was joined recently by Eddie Money on the Morning Dew show (that's the one on WBAI). He came down to the studio and sat in as guest DJ and co-host of the program. That can currently be found at www.wbai.org/archives. Scroll down to the Morning Dew show on October 2 and just click to play. That was a lot of fun to do. He also sang his new song in the studio for us. Eddie still has the voice.

I also did music and interview programs recently with Jon Anderson of Yes and I have one coming up with Rick Wakeman. I still have to edit down the interview we did with Paul Kantner about two weeks ago, so we can make a show out of that.

Some upcoming guests will be Greg Lake and I am close to securing Ray Manzarek of The Doors for a show.

Anyhow, if interested, shoot me an e mail and I can tell you of the availability of these programs.

Peace,

Stu
