Next time he addresses me I'll pretend I'm you if that helps any.” 8:29:33 PM 6/30/05 “hmmm.. Maybe I can turn it on as everybody get crazy before the wedding.” 8:30:43 PM 6/30/05 “Man, I hit the nail on the head. Refresher course for ya sarge: the first three posts: “Ok, we're programmed and pretty much ready to rock and roll on Saturday! Ole Tree (Captain America) Beard is going to salute the 229th birthday of our great nation. Songs of America! This will include a wide array of approaches, as much has been written about the U.S.A.! Join me! This will be a good one. I promise... last edited: 6/30/05 1:36:04 PM” Treebeard 1:35:41 PM 6/30/05 ignore this user -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Tree - Did you see "Life Laundry" last night? The redid Mike Read's house. Interesting lifestyle.” Sarge 1:40:35 PM 6/30/05 ignore this user -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Is your show going to be anti-American songs? and tons of 60s folk music?” Sarge 1:41:07 PM 6/30/05 Tree addressed you? Really?” 8:33:20 PM 6/30/05 “You missed ... “Let's chalk it up to a misunderstanding. Hell, if it weren't for you guys, I might not have many listeners! lol Seriously, all I ask is a chance. If you think I went over the line after you hear it, then please, I want the feedback. I CAN take the critisism. Fair enough?” Treebeard 7:27:14 PM 6/30/05 Who do you think the "misunderstanding" was with Geobeet? Who on here is the only one that he has said he might "go over the line", Geobeet? Why are you such a punk? last edited: 6/30/05 8:40:01 PM” 8:38:53 PM 6/30/05 “Wow, what a thread... I dont see masters of war as a song that pisses on soldiers. Its pretty damn obvious that its a song about politicians who start wars and are never personally involved in the suffering. I may not agree with it entirely but often times find comfort inthe message that dylan is trying to convey. IMO the song is about frustration and the anger that comes with it. Ironically in the end Dylan becomes what he hates by wishing death upon someone. Its a big ole circle of death. It show what we can and do become. And sarge before you get all worked up, I am a veteran.” 8:41:24 PM 6/30/05 “Oh BTW I forgot to wish your show good luck. I love the SGT barry sadler song. I used to sing it to myself in airborne school.” 8:42:39 PM 6/30/05 “birch - If you're so good at seeing the point, you'd ask yourself "does that song celebrate America"? It does not.” 8:46:12 PM 6/30/05 “Oh, and before you ask for extra credibility for being a veteran next time, Kerry was a veteran, so that doesn't mean a whole lot to me in an argument. But as for your service, thanks.” 8:47:13 PM 6/30/05 “Sarge, I never said it was a positive or negative to America. Its a song, nothing more or less. The Kerry jab was unneeded sarge. Please refrain from resorting to personal attacks and low blows with me. I have been very cordial with you on TT and via email. I would expect the same courtesy from you, thanks in advance.” 8:51:30 PM 6/30/05 “birch - I didn't say you did say it was positive or negative to America. That's the point! You didn't say that. The point of the "misunderstanding" that tree and I had in the first place was centered around the fact that that song did not "celebrate America", as he had originally said the show would do. Your hair-splitting over the exact meaning missed the whole point of the discussion. re: the Kerry jab. It was NOT a personal attack. I simply said that I do not give military experience extra credibility in an argument. Do you? My example was Kerry. If you think I was calling you Kerry somehow, or whatever, then read again what I posted. I swear (and this is a general-personal attack) ... there is a bunch of babies on here tonight. (and birch - You and your wife need to stop preaching to me. I don't find it cordial at all. It's patronizing. Save it for your children. Friendly advice is one thing. You're overboard. If you were TRULY courteous, you'd save that kind of advice for email.)” 8:58:02 PM 6/30/05 “and birch - I don't know how long you were in airborn school, or your position there, but those "guys" making the decisions in suits are doing it right along side guys wearing medals. They're not doing it alone. I guarantee they're not ordering a way that the SOLDIERS (top brass) are not approving and accepting (99% of the time). So "yes", it's pissing on soldiers as well. He might not have intended it, but that's what it does. Just like Fonda didn't mean to piss on the POWs, but she did.” 9:07:33 PM 6/30/05 “Sarge no one is preaching to you. We are all free to speak or minds and express our opinions. I have heard you say this much numerous times. I dont see how my post was "overboard" (your words) but to each his own. I will judge a man by his fruits. I see that wherever you post there is conflict, and strife. Not my thing, enjoy yourself.” 9:10:40 PM 6/30/05 “Who created OUR conflict birch? I guess it's only "cool" if you criticize my "getting worked up", but not if I correct your misunderstanding of the conversation I had with somebody else. One way street.” 9:15:38 PM 6/30/05 “no conflict on my side. and thanks but I needed no correction from you regarding your commentary on this thread. I can read and discern...talk about patronizing.” 9:21:54 PM 6/30/05 “You'll only see patronizing remarks from me in retaliation. That's my M.O. Thanks for the comment that I'll get "worked up".” 9:26:51 PM 6/30/05 “last word” 5:33:42 AM 7/01/05 “last word” 8:12:53 AM 7/01/05 “Take that birch! :)” 8:13:13 AM 7/01/05 “ ”8:14:45 AM 7/01/05 “word” 8:16:29 AM 7/01/05 “Pathman, what have you done to Edvard Munch?” 8:19:08 AM 7/01/05 “ENS - I read your post about paying homage to the Live 8 concerts. It is, initially, a good idea. However, to do justice to it might prove difficult. Lots of the acts are either ethnic bands I have never heard of (Johannesburg, Africa calling shows, for instance), nor could I hope to get the music together, if I so desired. Some of the rap artists and such wouldn't exactly fit the mold of what I do. So, at best, it would be a very selective effort and rather incomplete. Just not practical, but a good thought! Birch - Thanks for the good wishes for a fun show and for the open mindedness concerning the music. I came on here yesterday with an original intent of dropping a teaser about the show, not realizing that it was going to blow up like it did. The truth is, if you saw the playlist, and then re-read the thread starting yesterday afternoon, you would take a step back and wonder if we were talking about the same show. Let me add one thing about the 60's era. Protest music was big back then. Times were tumultuous. To ignore that period of American history, when your main goal is to provide entertainment within the rock music genre, would be doing it an injustice. That being said, the rest is just good music with the same thematic thread running through it, celebrating America.” 8:28:26 AM 7/01/05 “hey tree, you gona play any Country Joe and the Fish songs this weekend ;)” 8:29:09 AM 7/01/05 “can you please play, Woody Guthrie(sp) This Land is your land, this land is my land I truly love that song!” 8:30:25 AM 7/01/05 “No to all of you! I'm going to lock myself in the studio and play 'Masters of War', over and over and over again! j/k Sarge! (ducking the chair being thrown)” 8:33:43 AM 7/01/05 “Geo & Ewker have the same obsession with me. Both keep yelling nonsense about me on threads I have nothing to do with. Real Classy. LOL” StoveStomper 3:16:23 PM 6/30/05 SS, you mean like your doing now...LOL..hahahahahahahahaha” 8:37:49 AM 7/01/05 “Tree, I will be backpacking this weekend so I will miss your show. Play whatever you want. Have a great July 4th. shaking head at what happened to this thread” 8:45:29 AM 7/01/05 “No tree, you have to please all of us. Scrap your damn silly plan and play what we all want. Who the hell do you think you are? The DJ or something? You'd think it was your show the way you act. :)” 8:47:41 AM 7/01/05 “And it's one two three what are we fighting for? Don't ask me I don't give a damn Just send me to Vietnam And it's five six seven open up the pearly gates There ain't no use for wonderin' why Whoopie we're all gonna die” 8:49:25 AM 7/01/05 “Thanks, Ewk. Have a good hike...” 9:04:07 AM 7/01/05 “See, this is the great thing about having a live DJ. Normally I want music and no talk but for special occations I like a DJ who is going to play his own personal favorites from a genre. I don't want to her what's popular, like a bunch of Toby frickin' Kieth and Springstien. I want the deep cut B sides that say what the occasion is about. In this case I wanna hear what TREEBEARD wants to play. Good luck on the show DJ Stew!” 9:19:54 AM 7/01/05 “Thanks Nig.” 9:23:45 AM 7/01/05 “Tree - Have you guys considered archiving the shows? I assume that would be too expensive? I would definitely want to listen to shows I miss, like this weekend, and I bet a lot of TTers who hike on weekends would do the same.” 9:24:05 AM 7/01/05 “"Thanks Nig" - Treebeard Keep the racial slurs off of TT!” 9:26:22 AM 7/01/05 “Treebeard - If you run out of "Rock," these pre-country numbers rock! LOL j/k NS” 9:40:54 AM 7/01/05 “old, old school country does rock. paul, youre almost cool” 9:43:52 AM 7/01/05 “Ha, mapleleaf, Bluegrass, actually. "Poole's role as the patron saint of modern country music." The CDs arrived. “” 9:53:52 AM 7/01/05 “Bluegrass is not country. Saying they are the same in some areas will result in a not so pleasant experience.” 9:56:41 AM 7/01/05 “I love Bluegrass! I hate Country!” 9:59:13 AM 7/01/05 “Charlie Poole is a legend. However Bluegrass IS Bill Monroe.” 10:04:38 AM 7/01/05 “lumberzac - You're correct. They are trying to give Poole credit as predecessor to country music. From the following it appears that he was before bluegrass, too. "Together with his center-stage and nuanced arrangements, Poole's treatment of three-finger banjo picking came to contain the crfitical DNA for bluegrass, the branch of mountain music he inspired but did not live to see." last edited: 7/01/05 10:13:03 AM” 10:11:16 AM 7/01/05 “I was watching an interesting show (till I feel asleep) about the history of county music. they say that appalachia played a HUGE part in the country music” 10:12:02 AM 7/01/05 ““I was watching an interesting show (till I feel asleep) about the history of county music. they say that appalachia played a HUGE part in the country music” mapleleaf 11:12:02 AM 7/01/05 ignore this user It probably did, similar to how blues music influenced heavy metal. last edited: 7/01/05 10:17:18 AM” 10:14:56 AM 7/01/05 “Thanks, Slim. I will see if they are at the station or try and download those . Hey Sarge! Archiving is going to be in the works for them aas soon as the moeny gets a little better. As most broadcast outlets experience, this internet station is in it's first year, which is usually a losing proposition financially. So, patience is necessary, but the plan for archiving is very much alive!” 10:33:03 AM 7/01/05 Interesting, thanks humanpackmule. “BILL MONROE The Father of Bluegrass Music "He once said of bluegrass, 'It's got a hard drive to it. It's Scotch bagpipes and old-time fiddlin'. It's Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It's blues and jazz and it has a high lonesome sound. It's plain music that tells a story. It's played from my heart to your heart, and it will touch you.'" last edited: 7/01/05 11:01:17 AM” 10:59:13 AM 7/01/05 “Bill revolutionized how the mandolin was played.” 11:04:15 AM 7/01/05 “Appalachian mountain music evolved out of old Irish-Scot ballads, since the hills were largely populated by Scot-Irish. Some of the music retained the Celtic style, but others evolved from it - bluegrass and shape note singing are the two most known. Bluegrass evolved into the popular style (Bill Monroe was a prime mover there), while shape note singing is still largely confined to the hills and hollers (and probably a dying art at this point). Indeed, the Celtic style music is also not as widespread these days. Country music has some bluegrass influences, but evolved largely on its own (and continues to morph as we speak). Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were among the first cross-over artists (they called themselves the Outlaws), finding an audience among rock-folk fans. The 1970s was a time of ferment and breaking away from stereotypes. Cruising record shops in those days, it was fun to see where they classified artists. Gordon Lightfoot has usually been classified as rock, when his roots are in folk or country. John Prine was in rock. Waylon Jennings was in country. But then, they had PDQ Bach in the classical section of one store, which cracked me up.” 12:12:50 PM 7/01/05 Jump to Page << prev
