I dont see masters of war as a song that pisses on soldiers. Its pretty damn obvious that its a song about politicians who start wars and are never personally involved in the suffering. I may not agree with it entirely but often times find comfort inthe message that dylan is trying to convey. IMO the song is about frustration and the anger that comes with it. Ironically in the end Dylan becomes what he hates by wishing death upon someone. Its a big ole circle of death. It show what we can and do become.

“ENS - I read your post about paying homage to the Live 8 concerts. It is, initially, a good idea. However, to do justice to it might prove difficult. Lots of the acts are either ethnic bands I have never heard of (Johannesburg, Africa calling shows, for instance), nor could I hope to get the music together, if I so desired. Some of the rap artists and such wouldn't exactly fit the mold of what I do. So, at best, it would be a very selective effort and rather incomplete. Just not practical, but a good thought!

Birch - Thanks for the good wishes for a fun show and for the open mindedness concerning the music. I came on here yesterday with an original intent of dropping a teaser about the show, not realizing that it was going to blow up like it did.

The truth is, if you saw the playlist, and then re-read the thread starting yesterday afternoon, you would take a step back and wonder if we were talking about the same show.

Let me add one thing about the 60's era. Protest music was big back then. Times were tumultuous. To ignore that period of American history, when your main goal is to provide entertainment within the rock music genre, would be doing it an injustice. That being said, the rest is just good music with the same thematic thread running through it, celebrating America.”

“Appalachian mountain music evolved out of old Irish-Scot ballads, since the hills were largely populated by Scot-Irish.

Some of the music retained the Celtic style, but others evolved from it - bluegrass and shape note singing are the two most known.

Bluegrass evolved into the popular style (Bill Monroe was a prime mover there), while shape note singing is still largely confined to the hills and hollers (and probably a dying art at this point). Indeed, the Celtic style music is also not as widespread these days.

Country music has some bluegrass influences, but evolved largely on its own (and continues to morph as we speak).

Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were among the first cross-over artists (they called themselves the Outlaws), finding an audience among rock-folk fans. The 1970s was a time of ferment and breaking away from stereotypes.

Cruising record shops in those days, it was fun to see where they classified artists. Gordon Lightfoot has usually been classified as rock, when his roots are in folk or country. John Prine was in rock.

Waylon Jennings was in country.

But then, they had PDQ Bach in the classical section of one store, which cracked me up.”
