We spend $750,000/wk on code orange compared to NYC spending of $500,000/wk.

DC Rocks! DC Rocks! DC Rocks!

BTW - can someone tell me how long we've been on code orange? Can someone tell me the effectiveness of a police force that has all it's officers doing 12 hour shifts for that long????

Gotta go! ;)

That's because you have more peckerhead politicians per square inch than we do! :)

No, peckerhead has no party bounds, my friend! We have equal opportunity peckerheads in this country!

I have to agree about both parties having members of that club. But given the relative density of the Democrats in both cities, it was just too good to pass up.

There are probably more peckerheads per square inch near me than NYC. That’s assuming the peckerheads actually stay in Albany.

Zombiedude is correct. The NY legislature is the absolute worst. Every single one of these peckerheads should be out of a job.

Never mind! Don't get me started on them!

NYS has actually acquired a lot of land that has been added to the forest preserve under Pataki. I do wish he would spend a little more time in Albany than he does. We have this huge governors mansion that sites unused most of the time.

I don't know about you guys, but we've been on elevated alert non-stop since 9/11.

Artex, I voted for Pataki last time around. And he has earned a certain degree of respect from me. His environmental concerns have been up to par and his crime initiatives have been ideologically sound. However, he has been a menace when it comes to downstate education. He has screwed the public schools royally in funding and has raised college tuitions way too much under his watch...

If you walk downtown you might notice men dressed like stormtroopers carrying automatic weapons. You might also note the "few" guarded. roadblocks.

These are hard to ignore on most days.

Sometimes I watch tourists take pictures of fed buildings who are then "intercepted" by troopers.

They interrogate and even ask for photo ID, relaying the info to a superior over a walkie-talkie.

If you ask them what the rules are for taking photo's they will respond:

'I cannot divulge that information due to security concerns.'

I'm thinking about going downtown and walk around the FBI building. I wonder how many times I could circle it before an "interception" occurs?

I see. Not sure what effect mario had on CUNY but he did F-up SUNY. I was a student then. I had a lot-o-friends all over the system. One was a journalist at SUNY Albany. Corruption within the SUNY system seemed to be rampant at Albany. Most assumed this is why Mario had a distaste for the system.

However, if there's going to be corruption, wouldn't one expect it at the Capitol University????

The problem with the tuition hikes as of late is that they waited too long to do it and now they are playing catch-up. Unfortunately colleges cause more and more to run every year to keep current with teaching technologies and regular maintenance of facilities to house them. If you think SUNY is bad with tuition hikes you should have seen the college I went to. Our tuition would go up 6 to 7% every year I was there. I don’t know if there is a really good solution to keeping tuition costs down for students other than raising taxes.

just my $0.02

The University System of Maryland has raised tuition and cut benefits for it's employees recently.

Our Repub Guv has cut taxes for the upper class and raised fees all over, but he won't admit that these are tax increases.

Those of us who voted for him voted themselves a pay cut.....way to go!
Our health premiums are up.
That's as good as a pay cut.
We got meager pay increases......the first in years.

Our wonderful governor skirted the law and took away our right to collective bargaining.

We work for little enough as it is.

The guv has pushed for slot machines to, "save the horse racing business and help fund public education".

I don't anyone who patronizes horse racing.....let 'em sink or swim on their own, that's the free market.

The guv is merely trying to pay back his political contributors.

The figure I quoted is for DC Metro Police, one police/security force among @ a dozen. DC Metro is the largest force in DC.

DC budget is passed by local council but has to be approved by Congress.

DC police is the major security detail for protecting the presidential motorcade, providing security at protest over whatever Fed issue is the flavor of the day (IMF, World Bank meetings, Irag, Million man march, etc.), security/traffic control over such things as the Marine Corps. Marathon, and security of dips who decide they need an escort to the Whitehouse so they can go through traffic lights. This cuts off about 5-10 minutes of a 15-20 minute ride.

DC police are also manning the FED roadblocks along with the Capitol Police

DC police spend as much time/money on FED issues as they do on local protection. Most of it is overtime.

Once they go over budget, DC has to beg Congress for more money.

You want DC to stop spending your money, then the FEDs should have a bigger security force. The same money will be spent but you can blame the govt more directly that way. ;)

Police Show Strain From Endless Alerts
Blue Flu Outbreak, Costs Raise Worries

By Sari Horwitz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, October 18, 2004; Page A01

The first call came in to the U.S. Capitol early in the morning. A Capitol Police officer was too sick to work. Soon, another officer called with the same problem. Then another. And another. By the end of the Columbus Day weekend, more than 70 officers charged with protecting Congress had called in sick.

It was the largest number of Capitol Police officers who ever had "banged in." Many of them say they really were sick -- an illness brought on by fatigue. The continual elevated terror alerts have meant weeks and weeks of 12-hour shifts, little vacation and fewer days off. When Congress decided to stay in session rather than adjourn for the holiday weekend, it was, for many, the last straw.

"The officers are extremely fatigued. They're really stressed out," said U.S. Capitol Police Officer Andy Maybo, chairman of the police union, which did not organize or support the action.

It's not just the Capitol Police. All across the country, but especially in Washington and New York, police officers and federal agents say the heightened alert and the strain of working long hours with no end in sight are taking their toll. Experts on policing, police chiefs and the officers themselves wonder whether the law enforcement agencies can sustain the current staffing levels without a general change in policy by government agencies that would provide some financial and manpower relief

My post was about local, DC, police force having to spend money like NYC. It's from our tax dollars, that's the problem. My money is going towards my Police force protecting Your government. My money might be spent more wisely on local issues if we didn't have to spend so much time & money on Fed issues.

Also note, DC never gets fully reimbursed for "excessive" Fed work.

Now, how much extra Fed money goes into cities such as NYC & DC for terror protection? We all use everyones taxes, no?
