"bugs are dying by the truckload"

My house is being invaded with ladybugs looking for a place to hibernate...a few are cute, but hundreds get a little annoying...

Be glad they're ladybugs, twigeater. We've got cluster flies at work.

I feel your pain Twigeater. Ladybugs invade my house every year too. They get into everything and they don't taste very good if you accidentally eat one that landed in your food.

Yes they are gross. Luckily, they're pretty much contained to a couple of offices and mine isn't one of them. We use a shop vac to vaccum them up a few times a day in an empty office. Cluster fly larva apparently feed on earthworms.

More than you'll ever want to know about cluster flies

LZ--
you goof!!
but seriously, my brother had a ton of ladybugs at his home in WI, and he said they were biting his kids. seemed suspicious to me, but then again, stranger things have happened.

In my best Monty Python voice:

I don't think they really bite...I think it's more along the lines of a nibble, really.

"Ladybugs do not feed on people, although they will occasionally pinch exposed skin. Ladybug may leave a slimy smear and they have a distinct odor when crushed."

I think I read somewhere that there are 2 kinds of ladybugs. The kind that don't bite. (I think they are redder in color) and the kind that do (more orangey in color).

The orange kind are not native to the U.S. The ladybug problem has been quite bad the past few years in Michigan, due to the milder winters... (not as many getting killed off!)

The biting ones are and asian beatle and arnt really a ladybug...just looks like them. And they suck. Never met them till I moved out here. Now I am getting weary of them.

we used to get invaded by ladybugs in teh Carolina mtns, they imported gazillions of them to try and control some aphid that was destroying tobacco crops.

The got the wrong type.

I am so with you on that, humanpackmule. I am sick of getting roasted. Every trip this summer has been muggy, buggy, and stinking record heat. I am choking for cool days hiking and cold nights in a warm sleeping bag.

Man I hope it cools off before my October hike to Jerry Lake/Ice Age Trail and even more so for November at WK's Mammoth Caves hike. If October 7th weekend is going to be stinking heat I'll bag the trip before I do another jungle hike... it would be the 4th this summer like that.

WK: I won't wimp out on the Mammoth Cave trip regardless of the weather... rain, snow, whatever. You can hold me to that.

But autumn is the best!

I just went for a nice three mile run outside. It's gorgeous out there. We had rain like crazy last night and everything is clean and fresh looking. The leaves are starting to really brighten. I have apple cider in the 'fridge. And it's almost cool enough to break out the sweaters. =)

I so love this time of the year! Got home from work yesterday and turned off the A/C and opened the window. Slept with the sound of the crickets last night. People on the train platform this morning in light weight coats...

Another couple of weeks and I think summer will finally be gone.
