You don't even have to have a gun. Just park your truck under an overpass and wait for them to jump in!

Five deer leap to deaths from I-69 bridge

MARKLE, Ind. -- Five deer that wandered onto a highway overpass jumped to their deaths onto Interstate 69, one of them crashing through a tractor-trailer's windshield, police said.

After the animals' fatal plunge, their mangled carcasses littered the expressway to the horror of motorists who approached Friday's scene in the northbound lanes of I-69. Journalistic gold!!!

Wells County EMS paramedic Andy Stimpson said he wasn't prepared for what he saw when he arrived at the crash scene at the U.S. 224 overpass about 20 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.

"It's the weirdest run I've ever had in 28 years," he said.

John Salb, a spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources, said the deer may have been spooked by cars as they were crossing the overpass and jumped from the overpass, not knowing that a busy highway was far below them.

The 20- to 30-foot fall killed all five deer about 12:30 p.m. Friday, said Brian Jenks, a dispatcher with the Huntington County Sheriff's Department.

The last of the five deer went through the windshield of a tractor-trailer rig, but the driver was not injured, police said.

Late fall is a stressful time of year for deer, DNR spokesman Phil Bloom said.

Farmers are removing the last of their crops from the fields, reducing the animals' food supply even as deer breeding season is in full swing.

Any of these factors could have pushed the deer onto the highway overpass, Bloom said.

The I-69/U.S. 224 interchange is a likely spot for wildlife and humans to collide. The west side of the interchange is bordered by privately owned fields and the Markle State Recreation area, which is popular with hunters, Jenks said.

The east side of the interchange, an area that's heavy with traffic, marks the edge of the town of Markle.

Spent about 30 hours and covered over 22 miles over the long weekend driving and watching. Saw quite a few deer, but no shooters. On the plus side we should be picking up my buddy's 8 pointer from the butcher this week so I'll have a supply of venison sausage in the freezer once again.

Zac, what recipe do you use for sausage? Does the butcher mix it for you. I butchered my own this year(for the first time). I got a meat grinder so I have plenty of ground meat. Someone told me to mix in some pork for sausage...

We generally bring our deer into the butcher only when we want sausage, because for good sausage you want to grind the venison with pork fat, which is next to impossible to obtain in my area. The pork fat is to prevent the lean venison from drying out when cooking.

Found out that the meat was ready last night so we'll be getting 40 pounds of sausage (half hot and half sweat) tonight.

A hunter bagged a big buck on the second day of firearms season, but the kill caused him a lot of pain. Randy Goodman, 49, said he thought two well-placed shots with his .270-caliber rifle had killed the buck on Nov. 19. Goodman said the deer looked dead to him, but seconds later the nine-point, 240-pound animal came to life.

The buck rose up, knocked Goodman down and attacked him with his antlers in what the veteran hunter called "15 seconds of hell." The deer ran a short distance and went down, and died after Goodman fired two more shots.

Soon Goodman started feeling dizzy and noticed his vest was soaked in blood.

So he reached his truck and drove to a hospital, where he received seven staples in his scalp and was treated for a slight concussion and bruises.

Zac & strat, you don't need to use pure pork fat to mix with the venison. Just buy the fattiest pork butt you can find and grind it with the venison. I made some breakfast sausage with a 50-50 venison/pork butt mix and it was great. You can cut back on the pork (that's what she said) if you want less fat.

Some of the guys I work with use 50% venison, 25% pork butt, and 25% chuck roast.

There are plenty of ready made mixes out there (Gander Mt., Cabelas, Bass Pro) or you can find recipes online or at the library. Just experiment with your recipe in tiny batches that you can microwave or fry to taste the result.

Heh-heh, "pork butt."

This year was a slow year. Our deer camp only had 25 on the pole at the end of season. I got 3 opening day and my son got 2. 3 of the deer are ours and 2 will go to the foodshelf. Where is your camp at Pros? Ours is in NE Polk County.

Wow, 5 deer in a season is a slow year? We got 5 last year and that was the best we had done in the 14 years I've been deer hunting.

I usually get 5 or 6 just for myself but money is tight this year and I didn't want to spend it making sausage and such. Last year my family of 4 consumed 9 deer. Venison is good stuff and can be cooked in so many different ways.

The most you can even get in NYS is 4 unless you know a farmer with a nuisance tag. 1 with last years bowhunting tag early season, one with a muzzleloading/bow tag, on with a regular buck tag, and one with a doe tag (if you can get one). We've got one week left of the regular riffle season and a week of muzzleloading after that. Hopefully I'll see a shooter. All I've seen so far are does and I hunt in a bucks only zone.

GOt the stand put up in a frigg'n PREMO spot. I'm gonna slay um. After we got done we pulled around the field and there was a doe and fawn standing there 50 feet from my stand.

We saw 1 copperhead(he's no longer with us), 1 hog nosed puffer, 1 dove, 1 squrrel, 1 chipmunk, 1 terrapin, 1 coyote, 1 skunk, and a dozen deer

we shot 2 beer cans.....dead

I haven't either zac. My dad gave me the stand so I'm gonna try it. I've done pretty well over the years stalking them. I put the stand very near where I got my buck last year and that was the second one I've gotten in that spot. I've always udes 12 Ga slugs but I got a new 30-06 so I can get out 300 or more yards no problemo now.

Unless you are way back in the backcountry or using a shotgun, people should be using stands or some other elevated position. A rifle round can travel a long way.

300 yard shots don't exist where I hunt. Line of sight is about 70 yard at most. I went with the .308 more because it's a short action cartridge and I could get a shorter rifle for walking through the thick stuff, but still have a box magazine.

I sighted in at 100 yards, but with this cartridge, 50, 100, and 200 yards should all fall with an inch of one another.

Bow season has begun here and some of my buddies are hunting. I'll put up my 15' tree stands this week.

My buddy Bob and I tried out our giant goose decoy/blinds and they work pretty well, but I'm gooing to cut some more view-holes for a decent side view. The front holes let you see the geese a bit too late. We did drop three.

Bob's young chocolate lab took right to the game. Once we got everything set up he just lay down beside Bob and mostly dozed. When one of the geese got up and started running the dog tackled him and kept him there till Bob got there.

Things are looking good.
