Deer Hunting

“Crazygurl, I hunted for bear one season many years ago and didn't have any luck. Now that I am living up in bear country again I'm going to apply for a permit next year.

“There's already been 6 does hit by cars near us in the last month. All of the fawns are banding together, roaming around here. Its kind of creepy seeing all of these small deer staying together in people's yards.

“Yesterday morning I discovered part of my mesh wire garden fence was broken down from the inside. When I first put up the fence I never got around to putting in the gate and the deer just seemed to see the fence as a barrier without ever walking around to the opening. My garden was safe throughout the growing season. Evidently this one particular deer walked through the opening but couldn't find it again when it was time to leave. He tore a portion of the fence away from the post in his successful attempt to escape and the remainder of the fence was bowed out. There were a lot of churned up deer tracks and deer crap all over the place. Looks like I better get that gate up:)”

I came home to 9 deer in my front yard a week ago.”

i have always wanted to try my hand at deer hunting... no gun, nobody to coach me, and no place to hunt. all limiting factors. just getting out and doing it on your own is more than a little problematic. so i have learned to get by on the scraps people offer me... :)”

“Black powder ended Sunday evening and my buddy shot his second doe (the other during rifle season). Aside from him with the legal right to shoot three deer, the other four of us were allowed two each - a buck and a doe if the doe is shot first, or just a buck (no, I don't understand the rules).

In all the five of us got three does.

Miserable results.

My buddy has had a great year however beginning with wild turkey in the spring, then bear (a nice one and his brother got a huge one that is a rug now), bags of geese and duck. Next we are competing for the small game trophy (a plastic chicken with fur and feathers stuck all over it). My buddy's wife is praying he doesn't get that one too. The trophy for the biggest turky is a duck decoyed transformed (sort of) into a turkey (formula is length of beard [in inches] times length of longest spur divided by three). For the heaviest deer it is a piece of driftwood with an assortment of horns, antlers and cartridges stuck to it - gawd-awful ugly. The ceremonies involved are pretty special too.”

Me too, so I bought rifles and did some shooting and never did find anyone to hunt with. Then I had some kids and lost interest in the shooting.
Eventually I sold the weapons and bought some power tools.......turned my swords into plowshares.

“YogiSans, we have four hunters at our north woods Wisconsin cabin hunting deer this season: Prosecutor, The Lorax, Prosecutor's son, and a lawyer from California named Tom. Together we have five deer hanging in the first two days of the hunt. The Lorax shot two, including an incredibly good shot on his second deer harvested.

When I get back to Illinois next week, pick an afternoon and we will drive down to the range in Bonefield Illinois and you can try out a bolt action deer gun and a semi-automatic deer gun, and learn how to shoot. If you can shoot reasonably well, you can join our deer hunting camp the week of Thanksgiving every year (in Wisconsin) and harvest your own deer.

I'll post photos of our hunt next week.”
