Gear....Boots..Columbia....low cut....NICE......comfy!!! My New internal pack.....jansport H20.....wonderful..so comfortable!!!...( my first internal!!)...but I will have to get used to packing it...but it was like not having a pack on at all...... OK..Ok..I must admit my thermarest isn't as bulky as my blue thingy...and slept very comfy....and I will use it from now on....” 2:07:37 PM 9/26/04 “Good TR Div! Glad you had a good time. That's a great campsite up there.” 2:59:40 PM 9/26/04 “div, i absolutely love ur trip reports! very humorous and informational. sounds like an awesome hike, minus the hyperventilating LOL.” 3:03:24 PM 9/26/04 “it's a shame that TR sink like rocks on this forum but politics stay up top.” 6:32:31 PM 9/26/04 “Hugs to Scorchy.......I am so sad you aren't coming to TC4 :(” 6:35:10 PM 9/26/04 Cool report!! “Thats what solos are all about, sounds like you had a great trip. Soon, the coyote sounds will lull you to sleep. Good job.” 6:58:54 PM 9/26/04 “Darlin....not when it is right outside my tent.....I have to admit..I was scared......” 7:16:30 PM 9/26/04 “i'd have been scared too, especially being alone. i'm a big baby. one day i'll feel comfortable enough to do a solo backpacking trip. div, i wanna come to tc4 and meet you! but since i can't get off, i already signed up for the adventurist trip. you'll just have to come up north! (a good excuse for a vacation... "i have to meet scorchy, give me vacation time." they'll be like wtf??)” 7:43:59 PM 9/26/04 “I don't get vacation until next year...but my boss gave me Oct 15th off!!!...wooohoo..SO I get off at 1pm Thursday!!!!!” 7:54:26 PM 9/26/04 “well enjoy tc4! : P” 7:57:09 PM 9/26/04 “You will be missed.....” 3:36:41 AM 9/27/04 “Great TR Div! I like the part about sitting straight up in your tent...don't you love moments like that? I think getting the crap scared out of yourself is one of the funnest things about backpacking. Remember those screech owls when we were camping along the river in Sipsey? Wasn't that awesome! And what are Free's words about sharp things? Knife for protection?” 3:42:18 AM 9/27/04 “I heard one screech owl while there........and I don't mind getting scared....but that was a little much...she told me to take my knife in the Where are you going this weekend thread.....LOL..and I can't seem to find mine....someone suggested I take a gun that shoots blanks....” 3:45:57 AM 9/27/04 “LOL, why? Are people troublesome in Sipsey? Just camp off trail somewhere where no one will see you.” 3:50:10 AM 9/27/04 “I'm not afraid of the other folks.....just coyotes and werewolves.....LOl..hahahah” 4:13:01 AM 9/27/04 “great report, divinity. I love solo trips, so peaceful.:)” 5:21:28 AM 9/27/04 “Glad you had a great time. Was Borden low enough to rock, err sand hop across? I guess the Ivan rains brought it up a bit. I know exactly where the CS is, but have yet to go there. There is a huge boulder by the falls that is tall enough to see over the lip of the bluff. I climbed on top of that a few years back and thought then that it looked like a nice place to camp. I learned from BAMA that you could actually get up there. That place is on my "to-camp" list.” 6:53:24 AM 9/27/04 “"LOL, why? Are people troublesome in Sipsey? Just camp off trail somewhere where no one will see you." Dub if dub had read the trip report he wouldn't be asking this question!” 7:35:22 AM 9/27/04 “Great TR Divinity. You don't have to worry about the coyotes. Just sit back and listen to them in the night. The don't tend to mess with people.” 7:50:01 AM 9/27/04 “hey div...great TR. you had me laughing, that's good because I am a grump today. lol” 8:28:09 AM 9/27/04 “Good trip report Divinity:) I will have to make it to Sipsey eventually.” 6:34:40 PM 9/27/04 “nice trip report, glad you had a good time” 10:47:36 PM 9/27/04 “Great trip report div. Don't worry the wolves will get those coyotes...and then the bears will get those wolves. :o)” 1:53:27 AM 9/28/04 “Coyotes aren't going to bother you...that's why I was wondering why she needed something sharp.” 2:16:01 AM 9/28/04 “something sharp......security...LOL....” 4:06:41 AM 9/28/04 “The amazing thing about screech owls is how small they are for the noise they make (me too, I guess). There's no need to be afraid of coyotes. Their howls wake me up every morning this time of year.” 2:57:03 PM 9/28/04 An adventure with Mark Twain “Friday Oct 1......off I go as soon as I get off work at 1pm....heading to Memphis and then to Chili & Cottonsocks......another adventure.....Look out Missouri....here I come!!!!......wooohoooo........O M G the traffic on 72 to Memphis can be soooo slow.....I arrived and threw my gear in Trooperrx's vehicle and off we go......wow....it seemed like it took forever to get there.......you know how it is when ya are anxious to get somewhere..... it got dark and I got sleepy riding on the hilly winding roads......we stopped in the middle of nowhere to use the rest room....wow...what a scarey place....bunches of country men stopping for beer in their pickups.....( gotta love the country boys!!!)...eventually we arrive and hike in and set up camp....nice fire...nice company......but I am usually ready for bed as soon as it gets dark.....so off I go.....and it started to rain....don't ya love the sound of rain when your in your tent dozing off???... Up before dawn...and I started to pack up...I had Mountain House Pasta Primavera...yum.......and some tea......( I hate oatmeal)....so Chili heads out first.......and the girls finish up and we head out about 1/2 hour later.... we were on the trail a little while and we hear a dog crying in the distance......Socks says..."that's my dog".....and sure enought here she comes......Shelby wanted to hike with us girlies!!!.....Socks led the way and did a GREAT job......we got out the map every now and then and checked out our location......we chatted and laughed and had a GREAT time....we were walking along and Socks yelled and took off jumping & running......Troop yelled..jumped and went airbound for quite a ways...she wasn't even running...just flying thru the air....and they were yelling snake!!!.....I stopped and looked over the situation....the snake, a copperhead about 4 ft long had been crossing the trail and ran into Socks foot... ..it was off the trail by then ( probably had a heart attack and died) ...so I hurried along.....and we were all laughing..ya know ......the laughing after having the #&%!$ scared out of ya laugh....LOL.....boy can those girls move when they want to......( we also ran into a black snake later on the trail ...Socks beat it half to death with her trekking pole.....and it wasn't a poisonous one,..LOLL..)...so off we go....we came to an area where there was a big blowdown on the trail...so we figured maybe someone made a detour trail...so we followed it to the creek....and there was waist deep water(on me...LOL..) and a wall of rock across from it....no where to cross there.....so we found the trail and went around the blowdown and found the trail again.....the beavers were kind enought to build a dam for us to cross.....we decided to go visit Fiddlers Spring.....well...it was the wrong trail...so add an extra 2 miles to our hike.....we went down the trail FOREVER and finally I said ..ok..I am sitting down...and I took off my pack and sat down.......the girls decided to join the "Old Broad"...we snacked....yum...pepperoni & ritz crackers.....I gave away all my slim jims....ewwww...they have that thick skin on them......I was peeling it off....Troop said she likes the skin....ewwww...so I gave them to her, Socks and Shelby for snacks....so off we go....and we retrace our steps to find the real trail.......as we come close to the trail Socks just takes off running.....Troop & I have NO idea what is going on so we freeze.....but not for long........Troop starts screaming and swatting...and running..I wait a few seconds...realize it is bees of sorts...and I run too......Troop got stung twice on the arm....they were huge hornets and they hit hard......she instantly started swelling.......Socks took tobacco and put on it...but it was still painful......and then we began the uphill......the trail had been fairly easy up till now.....it was a butt kicker......so we stopped after a bit and Troop asked Socks..."how much farther?"......Socks..."about a mile and a half"....we go for awile and Troop asks..."how much farther?.....Socks..."about a mile and a half"......we go on...and after awhile....( still going uphill)....Troop..."how much farther?"..........Socks.."about a mile and a half".......well..Troop said some curse words.....and pointed out the fact that Socks had been saying that for more than a mile and a half........so we stopped at the top of our incline and rested......snacked and hydrated ourselves.....we took off and saw the bat cave....(Indiana Bats).....took some pics.....and off we go....we cruised into our destination before anyone else.....we were proud of ourselves...!!!...we saw 2 tortoises...2 snakes....hornets....& smelled a skunk Chili arrived next and then Stikky and "Dishpan Dan".....hey..I'm old..I couldn't remember his name......I have never see so much camping equipment EVER......they had everything including a sink.....we found a great spot on the river and set up camp......Stikky and DUTCHOVEN DAVE ( hey..I knew it had something to do with a kitchen) cooked the most WONDERFUL meal......Southwestern Stew...Jalapeno Cornbread ......and fixed it in dutchovens in the campfire.......it was wonderful...the cornbread was sorta crispy and browned and so tender on the inside,...yummmm....and for dessert.....BROWNIES...yum........and guess what they pulled out then??? WHIPPED cream....(they said it was for the brownies...I have my doubts tho)...the had ICE cold beer.....what more could ya ask for???....it was awesome........wonderful food...wonderful fire....a starry clear night and GREAT company.......it was chilly.....good sleeping weather.... Up in the am....when I got up Dave was up..had the campfire going and made coffee...yummmmmm.....and then proceeded to make an awesome dish in his dutchoven...eggs...onions....hashbrowns...sausage and cheese......OMG it was sooo good.....and then he made us cinnamon rolls....O M G...to die for...... after we ate...Stikky and Dave rescued a canoe for some folks ( cause they are sweet guys) and while we were packing up some guys they knew stopped by and visited...a great bunch of guys...one had his young son with him...he said we had girl cooties..LOL.....They offered the guys leftover brownies ....and you will never guess what one of the guys pulled out of his gear......WHIPPED CREAM....omg..LOL..do all canoers carry whipped cream?????Stikky tried to pimp me off to some passerbys.......maybe if he had not refered to me as the "Old Broad" they may have made him a deal....off we go...I rode with Dave who is a very capable boatsman and never once was I afraid .... they said the rule was ya had to drink a beer if ya ride in the boat...so ..wooohoo..the beer was still ice cold.....the river was wonderful...very scenic and sorrounded by woods.....my fav!!! we saw 2 BALD EAGLES....wooohoooo...my first time...and a ferret...omg..I didn't know they were in the woods...(I guess I thought they were only in pet stores)...lots of BIG fish.....we snacked on leftover brownies and cinnamon rolls...yummmmmm.....and one of the guys made a fire and cooked bratwurst......(LOL...his brats kept rolling off the grill....I see humor in small things...) On the trip out we visited a HUGE spring......it was awesome.....and such a wonderful color.....Troop dove in....and I guess it is quite cold....nippy I am sure......off we go...almost the end .....we arrive.....unload gear......pass out hugs to Stikky and Dave and thank them for the wonderful time....and off we go.....Stikky drove Troop & I to the campsite......hey Stikky....check out your vehicle.....you now have my "brake" marks on the floor.....and my finger indentations on the "Oh #&%!$" handle above the door....I arrived home at 2am ...and since I get up at 3am ..I called in to work ....I don't think they would have appreciated me being there since I had not had a shower since Fri am.... This was a wondeful adventure......great food......beautiful area......and awesome people..... Famous Irish Wilderness Hike/Canoe trip quotes.... "about a mile and a half" "cream me" "tampons don't burn" "I have to pee" "omg this food is soooo good"” 5:57:04 PM 10/06/04 “I can think of at least 10 things to do with whip cream.” 6:04:12 PM 10/06/04 “OMG that sure is LONG.....hahahahahahaha.... Put it on PUMPKIN PIE?????” 6:06:33 PM 10/06/04 “nice!” 8:49:00 AM 10/07/04 “Very cool trip reports,.. sounds like you had a hoot in hell! And who the hell doesn`t love the sounds of nature and rain hitting the tent to lull you off to sleep,...sounds fantastic and thanks for painting me there! Bill” 11:53:56 PM 10/07/04 “I left Friday right after work...and put a book on tape in....time flies if ya have a good book to listen to....I arrived at Stikky's and after a nice greeting from him and Khatru, we were off to Walmart....a quick trip....cause Stikky walks so fast....he talked me into buying a pair of high rubber boots to keep my feet dry, and a pair of fleece pants......BOTH which I would have been miserable without......I bought a hat, some more hand warmers, anda few other items.....you could tell it was getting colder when the water froze on the mirrors as Stikky was washing them!!!..back to his place to visit, eat chinese, and preveiw the Big Bend pics!!!!..... ...Up and at em!!!...& off we go....a sad farewell to Khatru : ( .....we hooked up with Dutch Oven Dave @ Greer and loaded up the canoes...DOD was in for quite a treat....HE got the privledge of paddling my a$$ on the river!!!..I opted to ride in the canoe, like Cleopatra on her barge....work has been VERY stressful lately, and my goal was relaxation...and with Dave as my Captain, relaxation was achieved!!....He makes it look so easy...The river was up a bit, nice and swift....and even though it was up it was still a beautiful shade of green..... ...SOOOO relaxing....and a wonderful veiw of the area and bluffs that you cannot see when the trees have leaves.....We stopped at Turner's Mill for a break.....wooo hooooo....a toilet!!!!....a fairly decent toilet...tissue and you can sit down!!!...of course walking away to the trail you have a cold ring around your a$$ where the seat almost froze it......we found an old road , so we followed it....and found an old school house....It had shutters on all the windows, and they were all closed...around the other side was two doors...I tried the first door and it was locked.....then tried the second...it was open...so we went inside....it was one large room with a chalk board all across the front, and a hole in the wall for a heat stove....it had that wonderful "old building" smell....sweet and musty....... ...we traveled about 8 miles total that day and made camp...nice place......big area for fire ...and nice places for tents......we unloaded the canoes, and set up camp.....I found a wonderful sandy spot to put my tent up....and had it up in no time......Stikky and Dave have this canoeing/camping thing mastered....before I knew it we had a wonderful fire....and they began cooking......we had some soup that Stikky and his GREAT mom made the eve before.....it was so good and warming!!!.....chicken fahjitas.......seasoned to perfection......and yummy brownies!!!!!....Bailey's and Hot chocolate by a roaring, warm campfire...and LOTS of good conversation!!!!!....when the sun goes down, I am usually ready for bed.........so off to bed......I took 2 sleeping bags, and it paid off......threw a chemical body warmer in the foot of my down bag , and was warm the whole night ...ok..ok..except for my butt....for some reason it got cold....so I stuck one of those body warmers down the back of my pants.....and was comfy all night!!!! ....Dave was the first up....and started yelling about something......OMG...it was snowing!!!!!....it was nice puffy flakes.....and when they landed on my coat sleeve, you could see the beautiful patterns.....Dave started the fire back up and put the coffee on....wooohooooo...and started making cinnamon rolls in the dutch oven.......YUMMMMM....they were unbelievable......( I have this thing for cinnamon..)......and if that wasn't good enough, he made biscuits and gravy........they were awesome.....(food really does taste better on the trail....)....we lounged around forever, and then decided to camp there another night.......so we gathered firewood.......I hiked around the area and found skeletel remains of some animal and carried it on a stick back to camp.......I am not sure what it was...it looked like a rodent..had some hair.....and had big canine teeth..( is that what they are called???)...we tried to guess what it was, but never really decided what it was...I sure wouldn't want it running around my camp!!!...for lunch we had SUBWAY, that Stikky and I got the day before to eat for lunch, and didn't...I completely forgot about it...one of the good quotes was "we've got Subway"...used at every mention of food...ok..ok..I forgot to put that in my first part of trip report, so it isn't as funny.....ya just had to be there.....ANYWAY, we had it for lunch.....with some cheese and left over brownies.....yummmm........ ....as the afternoon stretched on we gathered more fire wood, to make sure we had a good supply for nighttime and in the am ...since we heard the temps would be in the teens......and as evening came, Dave started cooking a honey glazed ham, with potatoes, celery and onions.....I peeled the potatoes and my hands HURT from the cold......I had to stop midway and warm them by the fire.........moisture froze on the knife.......it was getting colder and colder.......my water in it's bottle started to freeze.......we ate a wonderful ham & veggie dinner...and topped it off with cherry crisp....yummmmmmmm......and a few rum & cokes.....way to cold to drink beer!!!...(and alcohol makes your body think it is warm...and you really get colder!!).... ....the guys knew the weather was getting colder so earlier they put up a tarp to block the wind.....and a good thing too......we sat around a nice fire, moving here & there trying to get out of smokes way.....and then it happened.......I was off using the ladies room,( so I missed it........dang).........loud words, and chaos at the fire....Stikky had burned his slippers......( it happens at every campfire doesn't it??....someone melting a shoe or something???).....time for bed.......and looking forward to it.......a warm sleeping bag...or should I say 2 warm sleeping bags???...the stars looked so brilliant in the cold sky.....it was going to be VERY cold ...my water was freezing in the bottle......I didn't sleep well the night before....kept dreaming about the computer program from hell...., so maybe I would rest well tonight....I crawled into my tent, and put hand warmers next to my water bottle and covered it with my down coat......I shook and put a body warmer in the foot of my down bag, and had another ready for my butt, in case it got cold again......which seems funny since SURELY I have enough insulation on it....I stripped down to my polys, and removed 2 pair of socks and crawled into my bag ....I was warm and comfy, but still didn't sleep well......dreamed about paper work..... ......Up early to get an early start on the river..( I am not sure it is possible..LOL.....)......we ate leftover ham and veggies for breakfast.......with leftover brownies......yummmm.......I poured OJ into my thermal cup and it became a slushy........I would drink and you could actually see it freeze around the edges of the cup....our water was froze , so we had to sit the huge jug next to the fire to thaw......... ....time to pack up ...and out walks Stikky and he says......"Thanks for letting me use the heater Dave"......OMG....what????a heater????....Dave had brought his propane heater, and Stikky used it to keep his tent warm while he dressed......LOL...omg.....and I froze my butt while dressing in MY tent?...sheesh......LOL... back on the river which had dropped some....and off we go....we could tell it was considerably colder this morning......beautiful........crisp........clear.......with a hope that the forcasts were correct and it would warm up........the bluffs had icicles hanging from them and it was a wonderful sight......we stopped at Bose Mill..and walked back to the spring...it is magnificent.....a wonderful green/blue color, the color of my fav turquoise ring....a gift from my mother... as millions of gallons of water surges from an unseen underground source....a cinnamon roll, and we are off again........towards the rapids...... ...uneventful but fun......not a day to dump the boat........way too cold....saw one eagle.....it must have been too cold for them too!!!......take out at Riverton....3pm.....vehicles waiting......so while the guys walked to get them, I unloaded the canoes to the best of my ability.....while they loaded stuff..I washed my face......O M G it started stining soooo badly.....and I could barely touch my nose.......It was soooo windburned.,.....and red as could be......hugs goodbyes and a big thanks to Dave for paddling my butt.....and off we go...... ......a wonderful sunset......great company......and I napped some on the way to Stikky's to prepare for my long drive home.....Khatru was so happy to see Stikky.......and I was happy to get a shower......Stikky fed me some more of the yummy soup he had made before sending me on my way.......goodbyes and on the road.......and pop in my book on tape......I now was going to get to the last part of my book and find out who the killer was...... gear list... clothes worn in canoe- bra poly tee shirt poly long sleeved turtleneck fleece vest fleece pullover coat (synthetic for on the river....down coat for camp) scarf hat thinsulate gloves sock liners 2 pair of smartwool socks poly long undies fleece pants lined rain pants one cool pair of rubber boots with green soles lessons I learned from this trip..... ........those toe warmers do not work well....they get really hard and bruise your balls ( the balls on your feet that is..) ........opening boxes of rice crispy treats is dangerous...they will leave gaping holes in your fingers..... ........do not touch metal surfaces with wet appendages...(Stikky can explain that one) ........hats are a must....they will help keep you warm...you lose like 80 some % of body heat thru your head.....but they will give you hat hair...or make you look like Yukon Jack.....LOL..hahahahahahahahahah..and..... make women want to pet your head........ .......chemical hand warmers are nice....but what the he!!....get the body ones...they heat for 18 hours and cover more area...and you can stick em down your pants...... .......chap stick will melt in your pocket if you have a hand warmer in it also... .......bring paper and plastic so you don't freeze your fingers while doing dishes.....( Dave did the dishes..I would have ate with everything dirty in this cold...what germs could possibly still live in these temps???) .......you have to take a cooler to keep everything from freezing........ .......and your 5 gallon water jug needs one of those covers on it's spout to keep it from freezing up ( ya know the kind ya use on your outdoor spigots??) ....and .....urine will freeze not too long after it leaves the body in these temps.......do NOT...I repeat.....DO NOT use wet ones in below freezing temps....... ....” 12:19:13 PM 1/23/05 “Sorry.....I put it here for me : )” 12:20:23 PM 1/23/05 “Wow...more adventures in life.......#1 daughter and son in law buys their first home....#2 daughter married off.....son getting ready for Lee is over by the car all calm and collected, and giving me NO assistance...so I slip my hand under my hair and shake it.....what ever it is finally goes flying thru the air.......it was a huge, monster, woman eating, green tree frog...it just hopped away...not at all bothered by my actions... ....Lee still by the car not offering any assistance......(trying not to laugh) and I am almost crying cause I thought I was going to be bit by a snake and die.....ok...so it wasn't so HUGE (but it was a pretty big one), it wasn't a monster...and it wasn't going to kill me....but what are the odds on him accidentally jumping on my head???.....or it's purpose????....a diving board maybe???...or maybe it likes red heads????...my very first close encounter of the froggie kind......” 12:34:35 PM 8/02/05 “ ”12:37:35 PM 8/02/05 “treefrogs falling from the sky...its a sign of the apocolypse” 12:37:58 PM 8/02/05 “divinity, you nut !!” 12:37:58 PM 8/02/05
