I GOOGLED it! LOL!

Actually had Norse mythology in high school, but all I remember is the damn tree, gnipgnop or was it Yrdrisil or some such nonsense? That and Valhalla, of course. :-)

I'll be using the SuperTroll's thermarest and tarp ideas for my Hammock, so that weather is a good test. You hear that, Troll? If I'm uncomfortable, I'm holding you responsible! :)

A responsible troll
Nice concept.

T Mac, do tell more........ What is this idea?
lizs

For insulation under the sleeping bag, he uses an under-inflated thermarest. I expect it will provide better insulation than the car windshield reflector I have been using. Also, he uses a large tarp above the hammock rather than the standard rain fly, so it can double as a cooking shelter in the rain. I love new ideas, and it was interesting to watch an experienced hammock camper at TC IV.

Snake - yes, this Troll is quite responsible.

Snake EyesWhy don't you join me? I'm headed for Yellow River SF. Expect to be at one of their campgrounds tonight and maybe tomorrow. Plan to do a couple of very short dayhikes. Tomorrow or Friday I am headed for the same site as the group, unless lizs has changed it. (She probably will change it, when she knows I'm headed there.) Come on down and help me carry a plastic 10'x12' tarp so there will be a dry spot on Friday evening.

I'm not officially with the group, but am doing my own thing. On Saturday I plan to head for Virginia.

NS - I have to work at my almost-a-job on Thursday and don't get off til 8:00 pm. Friday a.m. I'm heading south to Ioway with a stop at Bloomington REI to trade in some Long Johns. Other than that, I've made a commitment to this trip and don't want to have to attend those damn Trip Bailers Anonymous meetings. Besides, Lizs has lived long enough without having to meet me. It's time for her free ride to end. Maybe I'll see you there (If you do see me, don't tell anyone; I'm pretending to be someone else).

OK. I only meant for the next couple of days. Didn't expect you to desert and go th Virginia. I'm looking forward to seeing your hammock.

Stick around. I'm going to check long johns on the net. I'll be back.

Not much time, lizs. Just shoot me the name of Friday's site, if you can. I have a map. Thanks.

Snake Eyes
Could not find what I want on the REI Site. However, if you have an opportunity, please pick up some long johns for me. I will appreciate it and I'll pay you at YR. I need:

1 long john, COTTON, thermal, size large, 42 or 42-44.

Cotton is necessary, since I am allergic to dacron. 50% cotton, 50% polyester should be OK, unless it is from Thailand. (I've had to return several pairs of shoes from Thailand, but ones from China have been OK.)

Thanks, and again, only if you have an opportunity. I've been shopping here, even in thrift shops. And it's difficult to find long johns in Florida.

So, NS, is Snake Eyes your "lackey?" I wanna lackey. Snake Eyes will you pick me up some nicely scented tampons???

MOOOOOOOhahahahahaha!!

NS, you do realize there is a Cabela's store at Prairie du Chien? Maybe 15 miles from Yellow River Forest. It's north of P du C on Highway 35, I think. But I know, it's more fun having ole Snakey be your lackey. :-)

Lizs - I got the tampons you requested and in the right size. In order to save space, I unrolled my sleeping bag with the idea of putting them within. Unfortunately, I could only get one inside. What should I do with the other 11?

Hubcap, who's still a maybe, just wrote me and asked how do the late arrivals get their water cached?

hmmmmmmmmmmm.... back to the drawing board. That's something my mind kinda touched on earlier today, but then ran away from the logistical problem. hahahaha... But I do need to figure something out. Like an early arrival driving to Heffern with a vehicle and shuttling me back to the Jeep at the Backpacker's parking lot first thing Sat. a.m.

I would have to leave the Jeep open -- which I'm not thrilled to do and neither should you be with water and and and and BOOZE at stake (and possibly some spiffy Halloween costumes to boot).

OK, I am trying to think of a multitude of possibilities and what might work best. Maybe even I need my mt. bike along for some quick returns to camp from shuttling.

aaaack!!! headache time!

Be a "guy" and get the skivvies? I'm not a guy if I don't? Now you're in charge of my gender? I still don't know tops, bottoms or what. Nowslimmers skivvies are really starting to stink.

Re: the water. Leave it about 50 paces up the trail on the right hand side, in the bushes. Tell them where it is.
Snake Eyes
6:03:49 PM
10/21/04

Lizs, the booze and costume isn't an issue with me. I can carry that (well, the booze) the whole time. The water is what I would rather not carry.

Why not just cache water off Fire Tower Road, where the trail is about 1/2 mile from Brown's Hollow?
hubcap
6:24:48 PM
10/21/04

;-P I'm giving you skivvy crap. I wouldn't get his skivvies EITHER!!!! phhhhhhht!!!

The whole thing is, it's not just water. It's potentially booze and possibly costumes (sniff, sniff, I know it might be only me in costume... waaah!)

The problem is late arrivals... which would mean we should do the shuttling on Sat.

How about this? I will have a 5-gal container of water, plus a big Thermos type cooler jug that's 2 ft. tall x 1ft. across, which also obviously holds a lot of water. Plus whatever water early arrivals bring. We'll put that in my Jeep and leave it at the Dohahue Road end of Brown's Hollow.

Late arrivals, leave stuff in your vehicles. Upon arrival at Brown's Hollow Saturday afternoon I will ask for car keys **IF** you have stuff yet in your car to be shuttled. And I will run back, get it, lock things back up and run back to camp with stuff.

Maybe we won't need to. But I think that would work.

Snake Eyes
6:28:26 AM
10/22/04

Sure, bring woood. It's pretty likely it'll be raining tonight, so the wood may well be wet. I'll try to remember to bring those little starter log things (from Wal-Mart) to help get a fire going.

They have a good wood supply because there's a sawmill on site and prisoners -- yes, mooooooohahhaa, PRISONERS, aske me about that tonight :-) -- keep wood remnants (or whatever) at each campsite.

However, dry wood might be good. In the spring, I cached in some wood, too, but finally used that up.

I talked to the Lorax last night. If it's pouring tonight, we may end up in that three-sided shelter hanging out sans fire (no fire ring near there IF a fire would burn in the rain)

Have a safe trip, all!!

Latest forecast, sounding more like spring! lol:

Today: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Widespread fog before 1pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 64. Breezy, with a south wind between 13 and 20 mph.

Tonight: Occasional showers and thunderstorms. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Low around 60. South wind between 16 and 18 mph.

Saturday: A chance of showers. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 20 mph becoming west.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low near 41. West wind between 5 and 9 mph.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, with a high around 61. Calm wind becoming south between 7 and 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.

WARNING!
It is misting outside right now. And there's promise of possibly high winds and thunderstorms tonight.

Make sure you have the proper gear for this one. A local gal who is just starting bailed because she doesn't have good raingear.
