In my local Stop and shop I just found individual foil packs of SPAM 3oz and little pull top plastic tubs of Tuna and Salmon 2.8oz.
This is a great find for me since the normal size packs are really too much and too heavy for one meal.

I've seen the tuna cups before, but have only heard about the spam. I wish I could find it here. That would be awesome.

Has anyone seen or tried the Peanut Butter Slices? I wonder how well it will hold up in a pack?

Meangreen...I was at the local Grocery Outlet here and for the first time saw the foil packets of Spam Singles. Not that I bought them...ewwwww. Anyhoo, they were in foil packets just like tuna comes in. Cool if you like Spam.

Never seen them. I need more PB. I'd have to carry four of those things to make a decent sandwich.

I've got a food find of a sort. I just opened up a can of Harris Teeter brand pear halves in syrup, and found metal shavings. Let the recall begin...

Call 'em up and let 'em know. On top of being helpful, they're sure to give you some kind of compensation (not huge, but maybe a few free cans without the metal shavings).

Are you sure they weren't created by your can opener or when you used a pull top? I have had that happen before...

Nope, I found them embedded in the fruit that was at the bottom of the can. They refunded the price is all.

NOT exactly the food find I was hoping for....
Okay, here's a funny "food find"....

I've now learned to read the package directions on dehydrated foods BEFORE eating....

Thinkbubelz and I were on a back country hike at the Hoh Rain forest when we decided to try out our 1st store-bought dehydrated meal.... I can't remember the company name, but we got it at REI in Seattle....

Anyways, the meal was supposed to be a Mandarin Chicken with rice... We boiled the water... put it in the packet for the proper amount of time... It smelled wonderful and looked good and we and were patiently waiting to taste it.... when we actually READ the package....

Just before dipping our forks into the package and scarfing down our meal (after a long day's hike)... we noticed in tiny letters a warning about an "oxygen absorber".... In a panic, we quickly poured the contents into one of our ziploc baggies only to NOT find the packet... ANYWHERE.... (we saw a weird orange blob, but nothing that looked visibly like an oxygen absorber....)

So, that evening, we ended up eating turkey jerky and crawling into bed.... bellies devoid of a hot meal.... (which, incidently, we also had to PACK OUT....) We decided not to risk having any stomach upset from an unknown substance in our food....

Who the @#$% would put an inedible item into a foil pack of dehydrated food-- and WHY would the put it in something that would disappear once the meal was rehydrated?!!! GRRR.....

i could be just pulling this out of my @ss but i think i've seen a lot of food companies going to a nontoxic oxygen absorber

The theory is to extend the shelf life of foods by attempting to limit the oxidation process. Less oxygen = less oxidation = longer stable shelf life without chemical preservatives.

sometimes they get left out, and they are in a study plastic pouch, it wouldn't melt away, you'd have found the white pouch with usually blue or red lettering.

The orange goo that you describes makes me wonder if it was a seasoning clump that did not fully dissolve. They can look rubbery and rather disgusting.

most commercial prepared freeze dried food packs have those stupid things in them.

Dehydrate your own food - then you know what your getting - plus its fun!

In the past, we've dried our own foods, or brought ramen / rice vermicelli packs with us. This was our 1st time in trying the commercial food packs.

We wondered if it was seasoning or a oxygen pack... at any rate, it really sucked to have to throw the whole pack away!

LMAO!!!
That's what we call the flavor packet! You can eat it but it tastes like shlt. JK. seriously I have forgotten to take them out and they don't disolve. They also don't hurt anything by taking them out later. The "glob" was most likely seasoning. This is common. It just needed breaking up and a good stir.

Well, live and learn.... :-P

Here's a better food find...
We added whole wheat couscous to our backpacking menu.... it's a good addition to oatmeal and hot cereals to add more bulk and carbs... :-) The best thing is to add to things that are salty or sweeter than normal--it tends to even out the saltiness and sweetness.

Cous Cous just requires boiled water and 5 minutes to rehydrate.... You can get instant couscous in all types of flavors--usually near other Mediterranean and ethnic foods or by the pasta aisle. Whole foods carries many flavors... :-)

Not fried, so it tastes better than ramen.
