Duck River Canoe Trip
Who wants to join?

Date: Saturday July 31, 2004
Where: Meet at the Intergraph Parking Lot at 7:00 AM
Bus Drive: (by Adrienne Gibson to: Chapel Hill, Tennessee (2 hours)
Route: Duck River 8 mile stretch
Cost per person including bus fare and canoe rental for two (based on 30 people) $28.17
Return to Huntsville approximately 5:00PM

This trip is a LOT of fun canoeing-drinking-swimming-tipping over-eating-beautiful scenery.

Bring a cooler with your "rations" for the day, and whaterver else is waterproof and necessary on the river.

We need commitments quickly so we know if we have enough for the trip.

These trips are a ball!

I definetly want in on this trip, I live about 30 minutes away from the Duck River. I am off that weekend and could be avaible for carpool, extra ride or whatever. I haven't actually canoed the Duck in ages, we always go on the Elk, about 50 miles south.

Find out the cost without the bus trip as I live close by. Are you using River Rat's or the other guy in Chapel Hill??? The guy from River Rats is in the TTA with some of us. I'm tempted to drive to Huntsville and ride up with ya'll just for the heck of it!

I can't join you'ns. I will be on the Big South Fork that weekend for a 3 day trip. Day trips can be fun, but overnighters on the river are even better. Oh well..you all have fun.

Sorry I haven't answered anyone questions before. I just can't believe how my job keeps getting in the way of my personal life! I have an email into the person organizing the trip to get the name of the outfitter and the cost without bus trip. I will post this info as soon as I receive it. Thanks for your interest. We usually have waaayyyy too much fun on these trips. One year we performed a bovine rescue. A story too long and way to hysterical for here.

You might want to check out River Rat's. It is owned by a backpacker and hiker with Tenn Trails. He might even give you a better rate. I can get his no. if you are interested. I have hiked with him and his wife a couple of times, they are good people. If the other outfit is set in stone that's ok also, just trying to save ya'll some dough.

The best bet is to just find an old thread he posted to. Search on Savage Gulf, find the thread from the trip there this past Jan and get one of his posts for the profile info. There may be an easier way, but I usually just think of something that I know the person I'm looking for posted to. Another sure bet is to search on his name for one of those, "Hey Father Goose" type of threads.

ya need to go out overnight...then skinny dipping can make the event more memorable...but, maybe I'm just a river snob. You all have mucho fun, and remember...drinking and water sports do not always mix and its only fun, until someone gets hurt.

Thanks for the information, I'll be there for sure. There may be a few more here that only need a canoe, I'll let you know for sure by Friday. BTW do we need to reserve a canoe or are there plenty? I can probably bring one if I need to. I can't wait!!!

It's easy. There is one place where the water is moving a little faster and you have to cut a sharp turn but even that's not anything to worry about. You would have to totally suck to turn over or get hung up.

Things to bring:

Money/Check for Danny Long

Change of cloth - leave on the bus

Cooler for your "rations" for the day, i.e. food, beer, wine, water, whatever!

Bungee straps to secure the cooler in the canoe

Sun Screen

Take as little as possible with you on the boat - what you bring should be water-proof packed

Bring shoes (sneakers) to wear at all times - the riverbed is rocky and in some areas slippery

Can't wait to see you all.

Are we still on for tomorrow? I hope a little rain doesn't scare ya'll away. Yesterday I talked to the lady (forgot her name) about the trip. She stated that there would be plenty of canoes and we can even rent a kayak. I will decide on a kayak if we have an odd number of canoers. I'll meet ya'll Sat morn at about 8:30-9am. Can't wait to meet some of you, Karo

We had a great time. It was raining a bit when we first pushed off but not long enough or hard enough to cause any problems. The day evolved into sunny skys and lots of fun. We paddled, stopped, ate, drank, swam paddled, stopped, ate, drank, swam etc. The current was moving but in most places not enough to be a real problem. We only had two tip overs in perfectly calm waters, go figure! The three hour trip took us about five. The scenery was wonderful. We shared lots of good food and good company. We stopped and investigated a bat cave you could hear them further up in the cave. The rocks surrounding the cave were very very slippery. Can't imagine why!!

It was great to meet you karo and hope to see you again on some other adventure.
