i like to eat nothing but rolls, with squeeze peanut butter and jelly on them, and small candybars, and mike and ikes. Sometimes reses pieces are eaten too. this works good when you need a lot of energy to burn.

If you die out there the sodium preserves the body which helps with identification when you come out the bottom of the glacier xx years later.

The ancient egyptians used salt for the same purpose.

I take mineral (salt) pills on dayhikes during the summer. You need extra essential electolites when you perspire for extended periods.

I also take electrolyte tablets in the heat of the summer. I like "endurolytes".

A friend of mine was making his own sodium free backpack meals and he was getting weak and sick.
He thought he was dehydrating and kept drinking more and more and he was actually suffering from not enough salt.
I suppose the extra drinking just made it worse.
Unless you have a medical condition that requires a low sodium diet, salt probably won't hurt you anyway.
Sometimes if my stomach is upset and I eat a little salt it goes away.
Saltines settle an upset stomach.
Ever wonder why?

Like others have already posted, you need that sodium if you are backpacking. As a matter of fact it may not be enough. If you where a hat while hiking, take a look at where the hat meets your forehead, it will develop a nice white band from all the salt you're leeching out when you sweat.

Hatband? HeII, the pack, the shirt under the pack straps, my hair, my socks, my boots, get stained with salt. I rinse my pole handles off and the staps become soft and pliable instead of white and stiff. After a few days in the trail my shirt is so stiff it stands by itself. I must be salt processor.

traillady, your salt free friend suffered from hyponutrimia (sp?). Cells cant retain water without sodium so you are still dehydrating. It kills a few runners every year at marathons.

during summer two-a-day pracice in High School football the coaches would make us all take a salt tablet in between sessions along with pushing the gatorade pretty hard.
