I know they are subpeaks, but still peaks.

I'd like to get down south very soon. I'm not sure I am going to be able to get down this year with the gas prices. I think I am going to try for once a year to bag some sixers.

I was just up at Baxter State Park and it was awesome!!!

I am coming down in November to do Mt. Rogers. There is a trip posted on the trips page. Check it out!
http://thebackpacker.com/trips/trip/743.php

Lately, I have been into state high points.
I'm doing Mt. Greylock in October. I may take a day and get the PA and MD high points here soon.

And also Highpoint in New Jersey.

so wow, all the 5000 footers in the east? That's going to be an undertaking. I bet many of the ones in the south are trailess.
I think I read that there are around 250 peaks in the south over 5000 and there are a bunch up north.

There are 2 in NY, 4 or 5 in NH and one in ME. Let me know when you're coming North.
There is an Adirondack trip in October that should knock out the two fivers in the dacks and NY (Algonquin and Marcy).

Oh there is another state HP I may hit up this year yet, Mt. Marcy.

ENS,

there's a lot of discrepancy between list makers about the number for 5000 footers. the list i'm doing there are 195 in the south and 10 up north, i think this uses a 250 foot prominence and 3/4 mile distance seperation. others lists require more prominence (300 feet) and more distance from the adjacent peaks etc. i'll take the longer list to make sure i cover everyone's lists. i really want to come north and do the 46ers, 35ers, etc up there, but all in due time. i ran out of sixers down here, so naturally 5000ers are next. rest assured, i won't decide to go at the 4000 footers, too numerous and i want to get out of NC sooner or later.

many are trailess, and ridicuously obscure. but then again, one i did this past week had a ski lodge on the top, and another had a model of the scarecrow and tinman. i;m trying to have at least 30 feet of elevation gain with no specifics on hike distance. taking a ski lift to the top and counting it as climbed seems cheap to me. but some for that are pretty hard, since several using that method would require getting out a half mile prior to the summit to walk the road up to it.

eventually, the goal is to have climbed the highest 100 eastern peaks, the high 100 NC peaks, and all of the 5000 footers in the east.

speaking of state high pointing, i've also gotten big into it as well, but on a smaller scale. i've found county high pointing to be incredibly fun, you should check it out some time. to me, it's like suburban hiking, since i'm at best a 2 hour drive to the mountains, and usually more like 4 or 5 hours.

i'm trying to complete all 100 NC county high points. currently stand at 47 right now. Many are in the mountains, one in a military base, seveal in a massive swamp, etc. it's taken me to many obscure places that have turned out to be really interesting. i've met a lot of cool people (asking for permission to their land) and found lots of cool places (firetowers and so forth) i never would have.

County highpointing requires a decent amount of gas though, but other than that, it often doesn't even require any gear. check it out at http://www.cohp.org

how many state high points do you have? you're in a good place for that up in the northeast and midatlantic states. you've got tennessee and north carolina. i've yet to venture out to SC and GA high points, or even Mt. Rogers yet (but it's aa 500 footer, so pretty soon!)

The ODATC had a presentation last night from a guy who has bagged all of the western state highpoints...

He started in 96 with Rainier (got me daydreaming about next summer). Last August he did Gannet Peak (after a failed 2001 attempt)....

The guy he bagget Gannett with knew a pilot and they planned for him to fly by at about the time that they thought they would summit.. The plane got there and they used a mirror to get his attention.. The Pilots wife took pictures as he circled around the peak.. freakin' awesome...

By the time he was done with the presentation, I had chills... Anyone free August 2010?

Peaks in 2008: 0

Backpacks in 2008:

2 winter camping trips with scouts
2 day hikes with scouts
about 4 overnight backpacks with scouts
4 day backpack with scouts

organized MOAB, the Mother of All Backpacks: 3 simultaneous backpacks, 3 different routes, with about 13 scouts and adults on each of the three routes, planned the food for the 43 people for the 3 day backpacks, bought the food, and managed the packing of the food. Nobody died. Some had fun.

Sunday, some friends and I bagged Quandary Peak (14,265) in the Ten-Mile Range. We climbed the Cristo Couloir. Some skied down, I and others glissaded. My longest glissade to date, approx 2,000 feet.

Beautiful bluebird weather.

Looks like a fun climb. How many feet of elevation gain? You skied down?
idaho bob

5/19/09

2,600 feet of gain from the trailhead to the summit. I didn't ski, but several others did. It's a very popular spring ski descent. I'd like to ski it next year - it's just at the extreme edge of my ability level right now and I wasn't comfortable going for it. A crash could end very badly. I glissaded down from about 500 feet below the summit (from below the exposed rock bands).

What was the degree of inclination... Just curious?

5/20/09

ah - it let me enter the full text but then it seems to be cuttoff - the steepest part measured at 40 degrees. It felt steep climbing and then looked even steeper when staring down it preparing to let go for the glissade!

We got one that we want to do in June that tops out at 60 degrees for the last 100 feet or so - YIKES!
RoamAround
8:04:42 AM

Couldn't imagine 60 degrees...

I remember preparing to descend Hood... Some of the climbers were so uncomfortable going down, they pretty much descended in the manner that Brad is ascending...

I thought the number 45-50 was used, but looking at your picture, I'm thinking the inclination was closer to 40.. never really thought to get a more accurate figure...

Things always looks 5 to 10 degrees steeper than they really are (to most people anyway). The most common overstatement by climbers in the world is the steepness of a slope. Plus to me - things always look much steeper than they really are from the top looking down.

We'll use snow pickets and ice screws and a rope on the 60 degree climb - it's on Taylor Glacier in Rocky Mtn NP.

Snow won't stick to rock at an angle of higher than about 60 degrees, angle of repose and stuff involved, so if you can climb or descend 60 degree snow, you can climb or descend the steepest snow there is.

This was about the steepest slope I have climbed. It was much easier to go up than down. Notice the nice runout straight into rocks. Nice. Next time bring a rope, bozo! This was climbing Mt. Leconte in the North Cascades, on the Ptarmigan Traverse.

Nice!!! I've heard that's an incredible line.

Ours, Taylor Glacier, is actually the remaining remnant of what used to be a true 'live' glacier. It's really only a permanent snowfield now - it no longer moves. The lower portion is pretty mild, but it steepens dramatically at the top for the last 150 - 200 feet. I hope we catch it in good conditions. This season has been surprising - we got above average snowfall, but the melt has been incredibly fast - the mountains look now as they normally do in mid June. Everything is about a month ahead of schedule. I fear we're going to have a very dry summer.

getting started on the glissade is a tad bit intimidating but it's amazing how much control over speed you have with a mountaineering axe - of course the snow needs to be in good condition. If it's frozen, bulletproof ice - it's pretty hairy.

People get hurt in out of control slides on hard ice quite frequently. And just a couple years ago a man was killed in CO when he (maybe accidentally) slid down a steep slope without an ice axe and hit the rocks.
