Potato Knob is a subpeak to Blackstock Knob in the Black Mountains in NC. Pretty cool peak, pretty much a perfect point. Also Potato Hill in the same range.

It gets it's name from the early settlers that grew potatoes up there or something like that.

Hm.
I've never made a physical list of the peaks I've bagged. Many. Hundreds, I reckon. I have started to tackle the Southern Sixers, but I haven't written them down. Just keeping a mental list. #&%!$. Let's see:

Sam Knob.
Mount LeConte.
Clingman's Dome.
Mount Collins.
Mount Hardy.
Big Cataloochee.
Yonaguska.
Luftee Knob.
Mount Kephart.
Winter Star.
Mount Craig.
Potato Hill.
Mount Chapman.
Waterrock Knob.
Roan High Knob.
Tri Corner Knob.

So. that's sixteen of them.I need to go up to the Blacks and finish off all of the sixers there, including Craggy Dome which is one range over.

Also need to hit the other Roan sixer peaks. But I doubt I can do that before Fall.

Mt. Craig is a really cool peak, probably my favorite in the Blacks.

Craig.
Yeah, it's a very impressive peak. Those cliffs and the exposed rock make it a wonderful grandstand. A more intimidating summit, surely, than Mitchell.

Well, I'll be heading back up there very soon. Hope the weather cooperates. Last time I was there (November 2004), it was perfect. I even surprised a black bear on Big Tom (appropriately) who ran with great speed down the mountainside as I walked up.

The heavy bear population is one reason I was hoping to land a partner for my next hike there. It's been years since I've had a bad bear experience, but I always feel better if I have someone along where the bears are thick. And the rangers tell me the bears are as thick as they get in the East around Mitchell. Make sure you hang your food well, up there.

I took this self-portrait on the north side of Craig headed over to Deep Gap and Winter Star.

the last 1,000 feet or so were class 4 scrambling, dang near needed ropes and pro.

the half mile or so prior to that was class 3 over boulders and up snowfields.

I'm going to try Mount Marcy in NY the first week in August. I lived for 25 years in NY and never got to the top of a mountain there, but I'm going to give it a try when I go visit my father who lives east of Albany if I can get away for a day.

I didn't get any new peaks this weekend, but I did get to hike a few trails I've never been on.

Wingding0, I hope you get a chance to hike up Marcy. Pick a day will good weather, as the views are quite nice. Also, beware of the Mountain Steward. 8D

Wow! Quite a few impressive lists on this thread. I have only been hiking and climbing for about 6 years, so my 'peak list' isn't all that long, but I do like to share my outdoor adventures with others through photos, so here's one I took yesterday of Mt. Shuksan on the way to climb Ruth Mtn, in the North Cascades of Washington

By the way, earlier in this thread folks were discussing peak names and I have to admit I want to climb Sinister mostly because of the name! 8D

inspiration point isn't a peak, but a rock outcropping, and cliff top & myrtle point are subpeaks of leconte less than a quarter mile away, whose highest point is high top.

i'm climbing all of the 5000 foot mountains in the east now...have about 20. when you coming south again? it would be nice to hike with you sometime. you helped me out on the Blacks when i was first starting the Southern Sixers. you wanted to do the roans sometime didn't you? i'd also be up for a traverse of the Great Balsams, getting all ten 6000 footers from richland balsam to cold mountain. it could be done in two days with an overnighter, preferrably on sam knob or black balsam knob (two balds im dying to camp atop soon).
