Well, I'm studying for my final test in vertebrate biology on Mammals and i got to thinking, what mammals have I seen. So I was gonna start a general wildlife thread... but if any of you are birdwatchers the list could become quite extensive for every species, then people would start counting frogs and fish, and start with invertebrates - insects etc. So, i decided to limit the list to just mammals, what mammals have you seen in the wild?

That's quite a list, simer.

Cool, lumberzac. I've yet to see a Fisher. They're pretty elusive. Most people who see them get to see them glance a dark blur.

Is that the one that screams like a woman in distress?
Artex

That's about all I saw. The only way I was able to tell that it was a fisher was by the tracks it left in the mud. I’ve also heard but never saw bobcat. And I have seen moose tracks, but have yet to see one in the wild.

"The Fisher Cat, one of New Hampshire's most elusive animals, and a ferocious predators of small game. They are very fast on their feet and can turn on a dime. Few ever get the chance to see a fisher, mainly because they are nocturnal, but can be heard calling in the woodlands during their mating season. They have a chilling scream very much like that of high pitched child."

LOL @ HPM! I should have included bigfoot on my list, after hiking with you.

I asked about the screaming women sound specifically because I thought I remembered skiracer saying the fisher made that sound. Raccoons and certain owls also produce a crazy, similiar sound.

I've never seen a polar bear, an armadillo or a gopher in the wild. Otherwise, I've pretty much seen all the rest.

Sighting a fisher (twice) is always exciting - you can spend a lifetime in the out of doors and never see one. One walked by me while I was on stand hunting deer in the Laurentians north of Montreal and one ran across the road in the Adirondacks of NYS when I was driving back after doing Catamount north of Whiteface.

I forgot:
Prairie Dog
Manatee

The most exciting of that list would have to be... well, the polar bear caused quite a bit of excitement. Twice moose caused some excitement - once I was camped on an island when a mother and calf were swimming across the lake and ran right through the middle of our campsite, and once the moose was standing in the middle of the river and we had to paddle around it, on that same note i've had to wait for herds of caribou to cross the river before continuing on and I've had caribou in my campsite looking in the tent window. I was quite young when I saw the fisher, it's a vague memory - look in the trees.

ChicagoMark

Roadkill doesn't count...

Another cool one was the first day of my road trip, I was sleeping under the stars on the shore of lake superior. Maybe it was something I heard, or just this feeling I had but I opened my eyes and looked off into the dark and saw a dark shape, as I watched it it moved closer... before long there was a red fox standing about 3 feet from me we just looked at each other for a while until my dog woke up and went nuts over it.

I finally found my first dead body, a female, while out hiking this weekend. I'm still getting over it.

I'll post the details on a separate thread later on when I get around to it.

When I used to hunt, I always said I'd be the one to find a dead body. The oddest remains I ever found was the skeleton of a horse on the bottom of a river I was fishing. creepy!

Not too long ago someone/somewhere found a dead body. (heard it on the news I think) The person that found it was a hiker. Back then I thought about how I would react if I would ever find a dead body.

Hi Wind Walker. I've been looking for mammals, lol. I guess I was just taking a break.

I've still been camping & hiking. I have a 3-1/2 pd chihuahua that loves the trails, so I've been doing some easy car camping, and small hikes.

Everything except a duck-billed platypus and a Florida panther.

I happaned upon a grizzly in a particular Idaho mountain range where they supposedly hadn't been seen for 50 years.

"Cinnamon black bear" the naysayers not-so-naysaid.

"Nope - griz" this Georgia boy retorts.

"What never" they naysaid.

Then, about a year later, my Idaho Bro says on the phone: "You know that bear you saw in the _____ mountains? Well... it mighta been a..."

"I know it was. What part of 'grizzly bear' are y'all having difficulty with?"

Turns out, there's been talk among the locals about griz sightings in them thar hills.

The encounter was as exhillerating as it was unexpected.

Next day, I walked (scrambled) up on a monster male mountain goat while summiting a local peak. That dude looked like he was chiseled from white marble. Helluva specimen, he was. Moved like a cool mountain breeze, too.

That was in '96 - my first Rockies hike. Nothing has compared to that experience. Man... what an indoctrination!

The thigh-to-snout encounter with a six foot gator in Lake Whitney, Cumberland Island, GA was darned exhillerating, too. But we're not discussing "a reptile dysfunction" on this post, so I won't mention that one...

Things on the "to see" list:
jaguar (desert SW), and an American saltwater crocodile (FL Keys).

Someday...
