What wildlife have you seen?(Mammals)View Messages“Well, I'm studying for my final test in vertebrate biology on Mammals and i got to thinking, what mammals have I seen. So I was gonna start a general wildlife thread... but if any of you are birdwatchers the list could become quite extensive for every species, then people would start counting frogs and fish, and start with invertebrates - insects etc. So, i decided to limit the list to just mammals, what mammals have you seen in the wild? My list. Carnivora Bears (Ursidae): Polar Bear Black Bear Canines: Timberwolf Coyote Red Fox Mustelids: Striped Skunk Mink Pine Marten Fisher Badger River Otter Procyonids: Raccoon Chiroptera(bats): I've seen bats, i don't know what kind Marsupials: Opossum Insectivora(shrews/moles): Star-nosed mole pygmy shrew Leporidae(rabbits/hares): Eastern cottontail Snowshoe Hare Rodents Sciuridae(squirrels): Least Chipmunk Thirteen lined Ground squirrel Gray Squirrel Fox Squirrel Red Squirrel Marmot Woodchuck Geomyidae(gophers): Pocket Gopher Castoridae: Beaver Muridae(mice etc) Many mice and voles, i don't know... Muskrat Rat Erethizontidae: Porcupine Artiodactyla(hooved animals): American Elk Mule Deer White-tailed deer, (key deer) Moose Caribou Bison Mountain Goats Xenartha Armadillo Marine Mammals: Dolphin Freshwater Seal Seal I know I'm gonna think of more later, but that's most of them I think.” 10:33:17 PM 4/29/04 “grr, that wasn't how the list was supposed to show up... you get the idea” 10:35:12 PM 4/29/04 “My partial list: Black Bear Moose Boar Coyote Bison Dolphins (various species) Seal Manatee White tailed deer Raccoon Chipmunk Squirrel Eastern cottontailed rabbit Bats (not sure what species)” 6:52:24 AM 4/30/04 “Damn some other cool ones: Red Fox Beaver” 6:53:42 AM 4/30/04 “Does the front yard count as "in the wild" if you live in a fairly rural area? That's quite a list, simer.” 7:09:28 AM 4/30/04 “I think in your case it definitely does, skiracer. :-)” 7:10:27 AM 4/30/04 “Black Bear Coyote Harbor Seal White Tail Deer Fisher Pine Marten Porcupine Raccoon Opossum Eastern Cottontail Varying Hare Red Fox Red Squirrel Grey Squirrel Chipmunk Bats Beaver Muskrat Woodchuck Skunk” 7:11:08 AM 4/30/04 “Cool, lumberzac. I've yet to see a Fisher. They're pretty elusive. Most people who see them get to see them glance a dark blur.” 7:13:19 AM 4/30/04 “Is that the one that screams like a woman in distress?” 7:17:05 AM 4/30/04 “That's about all I saw. The only way I was able to tell that it was a fisher was by the tracks it left in the mud. I’ve also heard but never saw bobcat. And I have seen moose tracks, but have yet to see one in the wild.” 7:17:21 AM 4/30/04 “"Is that the one that screams like a woman in distress?" Artex 07:17:05 AM 04/30/04 ignore this user That would be a bobcat.” 7:18:14 AM 4/30/04 “The fischer can also sound like it is a screaming child or woman. It's erie and bone chilling.” 7:22:40 AM 4/30/04 “Kinda like the sound Pennsy makes when he discovers a piece of his gear is out of date?” 7:23:55 AM 4/30/04 “lol” 7:24:35 AM 4/30/04 “lots of critters sound like people when in distress...bunnies cry like babies, skunks scream like women, etc.” 7:27:23 AM 4/30/04 “Hmmm....lemme see, animals on the trail. Jerbear Goose Buddha Bear TownDawg packrat MileMonster Prowler Hounddog Katibug Artex” 7:28:00 AM 4/30/04 “"The Fisher Cat, one of New Hampshire's most elusive animals, and a ferocious predators of small game. They are very fast on their feet and can turn on a dime. Few ever get the chance to see a fisher, mainly because they are nocturnal, but can be heard calling in the woodlands during their mating season. They have a chilling scream very much like that of high pitched child." reference more fisher info” 7:31:59 AM 4/30/04 “LOL @ HPM! I should have included bigfoot on my list, after hiking with you. I asked about the screaming women sound specifically because I thought I remembered skiracer saying the fisher made that sound. Raccoons and certain owls also produce a crazy, similiar sound.” 7:32:30 AM 4/30/04 “Cool, now I have a new goal: spot a fisher in the wild.” 7:33:28 AM 4/30/04 “Add bear cubs to that list as well” 7:34:57 AM 4/30/04 “Black Bear Cougar Coyote Red fox Dall Sheep Elk Moose Whitetail deer Mule deer skunk porcipine mink otter muskrat thirteen stripe ground squirrel grey squirrel red squirrel fox squirrel groundhog marmot there's gotta be more but I've only had 1/2 a cup of coffee so far.....” 7:37:24 AM 4/30/04 “I've never seen a polar bear, an armadillo or a gopher in the wild. Otherwise, I've pretty much seen all the rest. Sighting a fisher (twice) is always exciting - you can spend a lifetime in the out of doors and never see one. One walked by me while I was on stand hunting deer in the Laurentians north of Montreal and one ran across the road in the Adirondacks of NYS when I was driving back after doing Catamount north of Whiteface.” 7:53:45 AM 4/30/04 “Fisher Pine Marten never even heard of these two.... i always wanted to see a wolverine” 8:01:36 AM 4/30/04 “i always wanted to see a wolverine They'll kick the sh*t out of you with those boots.” 8:04:13 AM 4/30/04 “I forgot: Prairie Dog Manatee The most exciting of that list would have to be... well, the polar bear caused quite a bit of excitement. Twice moose caused some excitement - once I was camped on an island when a mother and calf were swimming across the lake and ran right through the middle of our campsite, and once the moose was standing in the middle of the river and we had to paddle around it, on that same note i've had to wait for herds of caribou to cross the river before continuing on and I've had caribou in my campsite looking in the tent window. I was quite young when I saw the fisher, it's a vague memory - look in the trees.” 8:28:05 AM 4/30/04 “Does road kill count?” 8:30:31 AM 4/30/04 “Roadkill doesn't count... Another cool one was the first day of my road trip, I was sleeping under the stars on the shore of lake superior. Maybe it was something I heard, or just this feeling I had but I opened my eyes and looked off into the dark and saw a dark shape, as I watched it it moved closer... before long there was a red fox standing about 3 feet from me we just looked at each other for a while until my dog woke up and went nuts over it.” 9:03:40 AM 4/30/04 “Bobcat..... I've seen a bobcat!” 9:07:17 AM 4/30/04 “forgot: Horses, or Wild Ponies - whatever you call them things. I've seen a pet bobcat... I've still yet to see a cat in the wild.” 9:14:40 AM 4/30/04 “that's hard...let's see. deer squirrels beaver otter posum wild ponys storc (that bird, don't know how to spell it in english) porcipine bison dolphin red squirrel chipmonk mouse rat bats skunk racoon boar rabbit I can't think of anything else... seeing them in the zoo doesn't count huh?? cause then I would have a huge list.” 9:33:33 AM 4/30/04 “I'll think of others later, but here's a start: squirrels rabbits whitetail deer mule deer elk moose black bear (from afar) marmots (for some reason, they make me laugh) muskrats coyotes foxes ‘possums raccoons chipmunks buffalo beaver (passing on the easy innuendo here) wild horses dolphins” 10:50:09 AM 4/30/04 “black bear, skunk, red fox grey fox possums racoons squirrls coyotes ground squirls, marmots, chipmonks, fisher, river otter sea otter humpback whale Tule elk, white tailed deer, mule dear bobcat mountain lion cubs (didnt see mom) badger (at grand canyon, cool!)” 3:44:58 PM 5/02/04 “black bear, skunk, red fox grey fox possums racoons squirrls coyotes ground squirls, marmots, chipmonks, fisher, river otter sea otter humpback whale Tule elk, white tailed deer, mule dear bobcat mountain lion cubs (didnt see mom) badger (at grand canyon, cool!) sea lion, elephant seal cottontails beaver big horn sheep, mountain goats, wild burros and horses.... When I used to hunt, I always said I'd be the one to find a dead body. The oddest remains I ever found was the skeleton of a horse on the bottom of a river I was fishing. creepy!” 5:51:40 PM 5/02/04 “Do bear footprints count? Saw some big'uns in Dark Canyon last week.” 6:17:55 PM 5/02/04 “Black Bear Deer Elk Moose Big Horn Sheep Badger Pine Martin Weasel Muskrat Beaver Racoon Ringtail Civit Cat Bobcat Skunk SnowNymph Opossum Pika Marmot Chipmunk Chickoree Grey Squirel Coyote Kit Fox Grey Fox Red Fox Ground Squirel Jack Rabbit Cotton Tail rabbit Snowshoe Hare mole gopher Still want to see a Cougar!” 6:48:10 PM 5/02/04 “Buddur - Man, I'm so glad I ended up not meeting up w/ you. I just read your post. Not too long ago someone/somewhere found a dead body. (heard it on the news I think) The person that found it was a hiker. Back then I thought about how I would react if I would ever find a dead body. boy, I still am not sure. I fell for ya dude!” 8:02:34 PM 5/02/04 “I saw a pika... I've been looking for mammals, lol. I guess I was just taking a break. I've still been camping & hiking. I have a 3-1/2 pd chihuahua that loves the trails, so I've been doing some easy car camping, and small hikes.” 11:24:35 PM 5/02/04 “Everything except a duck-billed platypus and a Florida panther. I happaned upon a grizzly in a particular Idaho mountain range where they supposedly hadn't been seen for 50 years. "Cinnamon black bear" the naysayers not-so-naysaid. "Nope - griz" this Georgia boy retorts. "What never" they naysaid. Then, about a year later, my Idaho Bro says on the phone: "You know that bear you saw in the _____ mountains? Well... it mighta been a..." "I know it was. What part of 'grizzly bear' are y'all having difficulty with?" Turns out, there's been talk among the locals about griz sightings in them thar hills. The encounter was as exhillerating as it was unexpected. Next day, I walked (scrambled) up on a monster male mountain goat while summiting a local peak. That dude looked like he was chiseled from white marble. Helluva specimen, he was. Moved like a cool mountain breeze, too. That was in '96 - my first Rockies hike. Nothing has compared to that experience. Man... what an indoctrination! The thigh-to-snout encounter with a six foot gator in Lake Whitney, Cumberland Island, GA was darned exhillerating, too. But we're not discussing "a reptile dysfunction" on this post, so I won't mention that one... Things on the "to see" list: jaguar (desert SW), and an American saltwater crocodile (FL Keys). Someday...” 11:58:07 AM 5/03/04 “I've seen.... dog cat deer moose dolphin bald eagle porpoise and baby bear (3 times once with a cub) squirrel rat marmot seal otter rabbit raccoon skunk boar Chipmunk” 12:21:10 PM 5/03/04 “red fox wolf sea turtle whale... not sure what kind king mackrel fox squirrel mole bat (brown and black) hawk owls bald eagle in captivaty squrriels chipmunks bob cat bear pole cat skunk ground hog possum deer mice rat lizards wild turkies Saw a 6ft alligator that lived in a creek behind my house when I lived at the beach.” 12:21:41 PM 5/03/04 “lets see White tail deer red squirrel fox squirrel flying squirrel mice bear seal lion bats red fox gray fox coyote i'm sure theres lots more but i;m tried” 10:58:55 PM 5/03/04
