Wildlife sighted from my kayak..pictures
So, Saturday I unfolded my Folbot and headed up the St.Croix River (borders Wisconsin and Minnesota) to check out some of the backwaters which I'd seen from the bluff trails..I saw quite a few muskrats and, as the pictures show, some other river critters..

Nice pictures Linda. Looks like you had a great time. I'm surprised that beaver let you get so close, usually they are much more timid. I think I want to get into Kayaking next year...how much does a good one cost?

Great Pix
I just walked in the house from my almost daily float down the Namekagon (which empties into the St. Croix) and run back to my truck. It's such a great time of year to live up here. Today I saw, for the second time, nesting geese, muskrats and many, many ducks. No beaver, but interestingly enough I saw one on the edge of the road this morning as I drove to my Pilates class. Couldn't have been moving water within 2 miles of him. Evidently they do a lot of moving around this time of year. Don't know why. Mating? I'll ask the locals. No pictures, I only have my walmart disposable.

MH: I was raised on the banks of the St. Croix and remembering it over all those service years in all those places eventually drew me back. This was always home, I just got lost for awhile.

Great pics! Matahari, ever hear of the Allagash River in Maine? I'm planning a kayaking trip there next year, supposedly very wild.

MHH, I knew I could count on you for some great beaver shots. Eleven days before I go up north.

From my experience, usually two culprits behind clamshell mounds: racoons or river otters. The depth of the water near the mound should give a clue. Racoons will work shallows and muddy flats or bars, while otters certainly will be able to work the deeper parts.

BTW, mataharihiker, I'm really looking forward to coming over with my canoe and paddling with you and Snake Eyes some weekend. I told Reino it's on our 2004 "to do" list.

You guys set the date. I'm pretty flexible - except from 7/21 to 8/21 when I have a month long hike scheduled.

Hey Snake Eyes, you live on/near the Namekagon? Have you ever run into anybody from Camp Ihduhapi? Their trail program is fairly new, but the last couple years they have been sending trips down that river, that's the only river they've done trips on. I'll be working for Ihduhapi this year, and I'll probably be doing some trips in the area, don't ask me any specifics because I don't have a clue.

I should say, I think that's the river, it sounds familiar... it might be wrong.

Snake Eyes, that still gives us lots of opportunities. And autumn color season is a fine time to go, too. But I hope it doesn't take that long to pull it off.
